...My Swan Song By Forrest Winkler “….The ‘swan song’ has become an idiom referring to a final theatrical or dramatic appearance, or any final work or accomplishment. It generally carries the connotation that the performer (in this case me) is aware that this is the last performance of his lifetime, and is expending everything in one magnificent final effort….” The above sentence describes my very life circumstances as it is today. For you see, I am no longer the younger man of times past. No, I am much older now, an old man who is no wiser, or smarter than when I started my journey in life. Although, I do know enough to realize that these truly are my last days, and yet, I see myself as a small boy of five. I should not admit such silliness, for it surprises even me to think as a small boy of five at my age. It is said that these are the golden years of my life! I wonder who first said that. For when you get older, you realize that the golden days was our miss spent “days of our youth”. Yes, those were the golden days! The days we thought we owned could treat them as if they would never end. But now, as we return from our journey, we know where we made bad choices. For you see, it is the small boy of five who is pointing out my miss steps where I made the wrong turns. Sadly, such days come to mind too often, reminding me of my failure to listen to those who were returning from their journey on the ‘trail of life’. Oh, the things they would try to tell me. “Watch out for this...

...Making a Dubstep song A lot people have either heard a dubstep song or know of at least one. Some people like them, but some don't. Hearing these songs I always wondered how hard is it to make one. It turns out having free time, computer skills, and some rhythm are all you need, well some computer First you'll need some great to get started. The first thing you need is a computer. A lot of dubstep is the sound effects. You need a fast computer with a lot of memory. If you want a Mac, make sure it has 1.8 GHz, with an Intel Processor 2-4 GB of RAM and is OSX 10.5 or later. If you want a PC, make sure it has 2GHz Pentium or Celeron processor 2-4 GB or RAM Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 a sound card with ASIO driver support. Next you'll need a music software, my favorite is GarageBand. The music software is used to prepare tracks, sample songs, mix and record. Other popular software is Fruity Loops, Cakewalk Sonar, and Renoise. You should strongly consider adding external hardware to the setup. Having a basic USB mic on hand to record vocals or raps is a good idea and good way to create new sounds to use. If you're at all interested in incorporating original found sounds or acoustic elements and manipulating them in your dubstep music, a solid microphone is a good idea. The next step is to learn about your equipment. Playing with the instruments you have on your computer can be a good way to familiarize yourself with...

...(David Foral), a vocalist/guitarist (Dustin “Duddy B”) and a singer/song writer (Jared “Dirty J” Watson). The style of music that they play is reggae with a mix of hip hop, ska punk, and So Cal style. They were the main event but Pyrex and Ease Up also performed during the concert. During the concert, TDH performed a number of amazing songs. My favorite four that they played are as follows; 1. Cabin by The Sea: This was my most favorite song that they played. It is a very mellow and relaxed song. The song is all about having the time of your life by the sea. It’s about relaxing and being yourself around your friends. It’s about expressing yourself and completely being at peace. It paints a picture of a fun night at the beach with your friends and completely being happy. I love that it kept repeating, “Our friends are all around and the storm was an ocean, they say we look better in a black and white photo”. To me, this truly expresses that you don’t have to worry about your troubles at the moment, just take a step back to admire life and have fun and remember it. This song is all about enjoying yourself and relaxing. The tempo of this song is very slow and upbeat, the texture was polyphony and the melody was soothing. I was really impressed because the band sounded even better in person than they did in recording, which is really hard to come by now a days. 2. Spread Too Thin: To me, this song is all about so caught up in your life that you don’t even know what...

... When I think of music and how it influences my life I come up with many different types to consider, and at various times. Music I associate with my childhood are various songs heard during family picnics, family gatherings, and times or events of this nature. I grew up as a child in the 1960’s and listened to what my parents were listening to. Songs like Finger Popping Time by Hank Ballard and the Midnighter’s, I got a Woman, Ray Charles, The Great Pretender, Sam Cooke and Think by Aretha Franklin, who is said to be the Queen of Soul. These songs were of good times, happy times, they made me feel that everything was well in the world, despite the horrific turmoil in the U.S. caused by the Vietnam War. I still look back at those times as some of the best times in America and my musical experiences. I think the music then reflect my childhood experiences of sensibility, freedom, fun and laughter. My adolescence year’s music seemed to change a bit in America as well as for me and what we listened to in our home, as well as on my own. I was never much of a rebel so I guess music in my adolescence years was more of a way for me to fit in. Songs in the late 70’s were changing over Woodstock was over as well as the whole Love & Peace movement. We were bringing troops home from Korea and the long dreaded Vietnam War was finally coming to an end. People were rejoicing and ready to try and love again. Songs were about men loving their women and some even inspirational...

...I believe that the music should never be limited, but some controversial songs that imply sex or describe dark emotion should be sold to adult only. Music is a way that people express their feeling and ideas. A free society will not forbid people saying and singing their real feeling. On the other hand, teenagers normally are not mature enough to determinate what should be learn and what should not. Thus, like some movies have PG-18 label, many songs need to prevent from buying by teenagers. The “Queen of Pop” Madonna had many controversial songs in the 1980s, but she successful and famous all over the world. Her songs such as “Open Your Heart” (1986) and “Like a Prayer” (1989) were considered immoral. In addition, her MV of “Justify My love”...

...is like a medicine to me, and my parents would laugh at how much I enjoyed music. Whenever a song would come on, my parents would sit and watch me, while giggling to each other, as i stop bouncing off walls and calm down to the sound of music. I listen to music every day because of how much I appreciate and love it. The reason why I love music so much is because music always tends to suck me in to what is being sung. Often when I listen to a song, no matter what the song is, I get sucked into the song. What I mean by this is that when I am listening to a song, I imagine the song was intended for me. I relate to the song whether it is from my past, present, or future. This is what causes me to relax whenever I’m listening to music. This is why I view music as a powerful thing. I remember when I was younger and didn’t really relate or pay as much time listening to music like the way I do now. Whenever I heard a song, I never gave it much thought that it actually had meaning behind the lyrics that the artist was trying to get across. I would just nod my head to the beat of the music instead of relating to it like I do now. It took me till freshman year of high school to start seeing and hearing the power in music. During that year, I bought a nice pair of headphones to go along with my IPod. Only then did I actually start to pay more attention to the songs I loved. Music seemed more to me than ever before and it was amazing. I would spend all of my free time listening to all different...

...changed my Life By Elizabeth Thrush Kaplan University 2012 The Art of Being Human As I was growing up as a child I really did not listen to music. The music that I do remember hearing was what my mom and step dad listen to and that was country. By hearing this music it made me feel that I was not alone and that other was going throw what I was going throw. A sad period in my life, I was put in a foster home and my step was a very bad man. When I left my mom was the worst day of my life until I heard a song by Dolly Parton, Coats of many Colors. The lyric of this song really has touched my life for a long time. Thinking of how my life is a reminder of this song. As a teenager, I listen to rock-n-roll. The hair band like gun-n-rose, Prison and Rat was the one that I listened to the most. I had to dress like them and have that funk like to myself, like the cloths and the big hair. I had no care in the world about my parents I was running wild and having funny. But by doing that I got in trouble a lot. It was a funny time and I love it. I was rebelling against my mom so bad. When a finish school I got pregnant with my son and trying to listen to the music I real like as a kid gave me a headache, so I start to listen to country. This music real calmed me and relaxes me in a way that I could really relate to it more. My day to day life was just like to songs that I lived. Living my life throws music and personally relationship is how I get throw my day. Looking...

...artists or as some would consider them their favorite artist and we all have one. In my study I wanted to find out what people liked more in music the lyrics or the artist, and with that in mind I wanted to narrow my thoughts on to why do people hear certain songs and what does it mean to them? Song lyrics have more importance for some than for others as in the general populous (Buser, Flannery, Bentley & Gladding, 2005, p. 90). I want to know how important are those lyrics and its messages are to the general music hearing population. Buser, Flannery, Bentley & Gladding conducted a study by surveying 28 graduate students in counseling on the meaning of lyrical music in their lives. Their results showed that some songs were more popular or better remembered than others. Their data also showed that while some lyrics are personally meaningful and others conveyed important messages, a number of lyrics are just relaxing, joyful, and entertaining without a deeper level of significance to them. Although their data had its limitations with only surveying 28 graduate students in counseling, and the majority of those being female does limit the study’s findings. It still shows us what few people see in songs and the meaning that the lyrics are trying to convey onto their audience. 1. Does genre determine the depth of lyrics? a. As stated in the article that most of those song on the billboards top 20 are that of a rock and roll genre, and with that in mind...

...that like some songs for no apparent reason either because the beat is catchy or just because everyone likes it. Philosophically it is not possible to like a song for no reason because there is always a reason for our actions. For something not to have a reason, it is an action without thought. But since liking something has an idea behind it, it is impossible to like something without reasons. When you like something, it is like an emotion because emotions are caused by reasons. Everyone has reasons for liking songs, some are fond of their likings and some are not. That is why some people admit to liking the songs they listen to and some just keep it to themselves. Therefore, liking something for no reason is impossible. From my experience, I tend to listen to the songs that sound catchy. I have many reasons why I like the songs that I listen to because they are either catchy, have significant lyrics that have meanings behind them or because the words that are being sung in the song connects with the situations that I might be dealing with. People use some songs to express their emotions when they can't explain it by using their own words. For example, the song "Trap Queen" by Fetty Wap, many people like it because of the funky beat and some people hate it because it is stupid. But a lot of people have their own opinions to different songs that they hear. We should not judge them if they like certain songs that we might dislike because to them, we like the songs that they despise...

...An event that I’ve recently attended From my point of view, it’s always worth attending historical events when you have the time to: as well as providing the knowledge of the past, they contain a variety of interesting facts. In a couple of weeks ago, all of my friends and I attended an event called Music in the Holocaust in BVIS Royal City. I was so glad that I went there because otherwise we’d have missed all the wonderful songs. The first song was “Our town is burning” by Mordecai Gebirtig (1877- unknown). It was told that Gebirtig wrote “Our Town is Burning” in response to a 1936 pogrom in the Polish town of Przytyk. The song is written to be heard as an urgent calls to action (“Don't stand there, brothers, douse the fire!”). From my perspective, the song is very meaningful and it makes people have sympathy for the Jewish. There were five songs in total but the one I like the most was “A child of our time” by Michael Tippett (1905 – 1997). This English composer conceived “A Child of Our Time” after he learned of the November 1938 Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) pogrom in Germany and Austria. Wishing to communicate a universal message of tolerance, Tippet failed to deliver the reference to the current events in his lyric. Furthermore, during the song, we got the chance to sing along with the music performer which was amazing. If you want to go to attend this event, it will be held on the Holocaust Remembrance Day 27th of January. I’d...

...Midterm Paper Many artists base their songs on past experiences in their life. Many of them are happy, sad, controversial, and at times have no meaning to them. One particular artist has many of these themes hidden away in her music. Grimes is a renowned artist known for her Indie music. With her ethereal and ambient sounding tones, it is hard to differentiate actual lyrics and when her voice is actually the rhythm that is being heard in her music. Her song Oblivion is perhaps one of her most understandable when it comes to lyrics. Her song Oblivion has a story, poetic themes, and imagery. Grimes' Oblivion has story engrained in her lyrics. When the song starts, it has an upbeat electronic tempo in the begging. It sounds as though, it would not have any lyrics because of its heaviness. The first line of the song is as if it is an event going on in that moment. It’s almost like a moment in her life which she is recalling. Grimes sings (2012)"And now the walk about, after dark." It is assumed she is walking about at night. The she goes on to say "It’s my point of view", which assumes she has an opinion on walking about at night. It is confirmed when she goes on to say (2012)"If someone could break your neck. Coming up behind you, always coming and you'd never have a clue". That line is very gruesome, so there may be some underlying context to that line. Perhaps Grimes was assaulted at some point in her life or is making a general statement, that it is not safe at night. "Oblivion"...
