As such, after reviewing each of the core areas of philosophy, the subject of Metaphysics drew my attention. Defined in layman terms… Metaphysics allows me to, for one, to consider all I interact with within the schools four walls as “real beings”; and secondly, to consider those “real beings” as “genuine constituents” of the world that can hopefully can add additional strength to the makeup of that world. Anderson-Krerty also has been evaluated and diagnosed of having Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. At this time, she is currently not receiving medication at the request of the mother. Experiences of communities often shape personal identity and decisions to belong and not belong. Max Lucado’s picture book ‘You Are Special’, and Harper Lee’s novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ delve into the intricacies of belonging within community. Both texts explore how personal differences can alienate individuals from their community and cause a loss of self-worth. However people often overcome this disconnection to community through experiences of belonging in their own unique identity. Lucado’s ‘You Are Special’ follows the story of a Wemmick (puppet) named Punchinello who lives in a small village, where the same creator carved all the inhabitants. The Wemmicks that excel in fields deemed worthy such as looks, physical and mental ability, are given golden stars, whilst puppets that do not have these characteristics are given blue dots. Punchinello is a puppet that is given many blue dots, due to his lack of skills or looks, alienating him from his small community of puppets. Black children are primarily labeled with either being Educable Mentally Retarded (EMR), or having a Behavioral Disorder (BD) (Kunjufu, 1995). This is a concern because statistics show that even though African American children only constitute 17 percent of all students, they compromise 41 percent of all special education placements, and out of the 41 percent of black children that are placed in special education programs, 85 percent are boys (National Research Council, 1999). These statistics are not only alarming, but it has also been recognized that African American students, particularly black males, are either misdiagnosed or misplaced into special education programs.
