In this course, my biggest strength was summary writing. According to me, I think I have improved on my summary writing over the semester through practice. Another strength of mine would be grammar and sentence structure—there has also been a bit of an improvement in both of these over the semester. My biggest weakness in this course was argumentative writing and I still feel that I need to improve on it. I need to practice more of it, in order to get better at writing argumentative work. I don’t think that I really had any big challenges in this course that I had to face but again, argumentative writing was and still isn’t my strong suit. I feel that the argumentative writing really got me thinking critically. Looking at the summary-response

Reflective Essay: Course Analysis

...Over the course of eleven weeks I have grown and learned more that I thought possible. Writing 122 has been an academic experience for me. I have overcome my weaknesses and developed a better understanding and feel for my strengths. I have revealed new weaknesses and strengths that I will continue to work on as I continue taking writing classes. Throughout my Writing 122 class I have accomplished a number of reader’s responses that have allowed me to reflect and express my opinion on the subjects assigned and essays that have allowed me to express my strengths and weaknesses in the course. My ability to write and express my ideas, thoughts and knowledge has grown stronger each week. I have always struggled to put my thoughts on paper in a manner that is coherent and correct according to assignments as-well as proper punctuation. I can remember being told numerous times in high school to “organize my thoughts” or “provide more support and examples”. These are the things that I have worked on and improved over the past couple of weeks and I feel that my work shows this. Moving through the first essay to the last essay I...

...intelligently in the discipline.” After going through my performance, I suppose that this is the grade I deserve. In the semester that I just completed i.e. winter 2015, I really worked on improving my writing skills. After coming to the end of the English 1100 course, I had a much better understanding of doing research essay, knowing the difference between high school writing and writing at the university level. I have gained the knowledge that I have a capability to do good paragraphing, how to begin with your research essay and mainly, that I can block the counterarguments. My greatest strength, I have learned, is being able to do a good paragraphing and transitions. You said to me in the beginning of the semester that “as you are an international student, this course will not be easy for you, but if you work hard, concentrate and read the essay properly you will surely pass the course.” I believe you were right and in the very first major paper I scored a C grade. As English is not my first language and this is my first course in Thompson Rivers University, I was satisfied with my result and I worked hard after that to get a better grade or at least trying to maintain my level. When I go through my essay on Patterson, which was my topic for the first major paper I lacked in arguable thesis, I have learned from my mistakes and I have tried to write a well-organized research paper. At the end of this semester I found this as my greatest strength in English 1100. Secondly, I have also learned...

What I Learned In My Writing Class

...I think over the course of this year I have improved with my writing. This goes with the way I transition my words, making sure I have proper spelling, using the semicolon correctly and not having run on sentences in my paper. There are strength and weaknesses I have but somewhat improved in them. I feel like my writing this semester is way better than all my other years that I had to write. The reason why I think my writing is getting better is because I was never really into writing. I’d sometimes put the writings aside because it was a struggle for me. Now it’s easier to put my thoughts into sentences and making something like a story. This is because we write everyday in this class and that is something that I haven’t done. The strengths I have in writing really depend on the topics. The topics that I’m really good at are the ones that happened to me in life. This makes it easier for me to write because I can tell it the way it happened from my point of view. The weaknesses in my writing are actually trying to put my thoughts into sentences. I think a lot,...

My Personal Strengths and Weaknesses

...My Personal Strengths and Weaknesses GEN 195 September 24, 2013 Louise Gerdes My Personal Strength and Weaknesses The most common thing employees will ask a potential employee in an interview is “What are some of your common strengths and weaknesses?” I despise this question simply because thinking about my strengths and weaknesses is not something I randomly stop and think about too often. However, that challenge was brought up in my GEN 195 class at the University of Phoenix. The only difference was that I was provided the proper resources/surveys to help me accurately recognize what some of my strengths and some of my weaknesses are. It ultimately came down to that even though my strength is organization, I struggle with writing and procrastination, so I will have to develop a set of skills in order to advance in these two areas. In order to succeed in my college career and take the next step toward my career choice of criminal justice, I know I will have to work on one of my weaknesses, which is writing. I know that writing is stressed to be important in my career choice, so taking a workshop to improve my writing skills will help me in the future. Nevertheless, I know that my academic writing will differ from the writing I will be expected to do in my career choice, so it would help me significantly if I took the time to re-read Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 of Your College Experience: Strategies of Success. I can both improve my chances of...

Personal Narrative: College Writing

...this new semester I was stronger in some aspects of my academic abilities than others, writing, not being one of those strengths. Due to past high school experiences confidence in my writing abilities dwindled as a result of four years of poor mentoring. Developing a strong passion for the sciences and acquiring an acute fear of any English reading or writing course. My fight with comma confusion and run on sentences stunted my excitement to be enrolled in a purely writing and comprehension focused course. Within the first few weeks we were introduced to an assignment that focused on defining a word or phrase, I chose to define the word “perfection”. Unfortunately, sending myself into a self-loathing downward spiral due to the unknown degree of difficulty of this word. I struggled with the direction I wanted to go with this paper, then ran into the time engulfing task of trying to capture the ideas that I had accumulated in my head into four pages. The job of capturing these ideas and organizing them into a comprehendible paper was no easy feat, battling between my free writing thoughts and my high school English essay rules, this took me 5 days, 4 long nights, and many calls for help to...

Becoming An Effective Writer

...People commonly ask one another, “If you could have one superpower, what would it be?” There is a wide variety of answers that could be given, but what would your reaction be if the responder replied with, “To be able to write well.” Even though being a good writer isn’t considered a superpower, there is still a lot of power in writing. Words can captivate people, make us feel things we didn’t think we could, sometimes even change our minds and hearts. I want to learn how to change my writing challenges into strengths and become a better writer. When reading an exceptional piece of writing I notice that the author usually uses a wide vocabulary, has a good setup in how the information or story is being laid out, and is typically very knowledgeable...

Reflective Essay

...really great point to me in life that no matter what class you are in you have to think creative. In the entire course there was nothing but writing. I can honestly say English 102 has taught me to be a better researcher and a better writer. The writing for me was super hard in the beginning of the course. I have never seen myself as a writer I suffer from an extreme case of writer’s block which causes me to give up without giving a shot at the work. The extra help has made me feel as writing will never shy away from you in life so just write. The annotated references played a big role throughout the course this semester. The role annotated references had been the whole outline of this course without the annotated I had nothing to write about. First I struggled with the concept of the references I realized that there wasn’t a research paper without the references. The references were one of the most time consuming aspect of the paper. The research question had to have a connection towards the refernces The difficulty I encountered in English 102 came about from the grasping of the material, the details in the rubric, and the guide lines. The biggest thing I had a problem with was staying on topic, and giving too much of my personal opinion in my writing. The structure of the class is made to stay on top of your independence of the reading and writing. During the course of the class there were many small learning skills that were provided to gain extra help. The small learning...

Personal Narrative: My Writing Process

...beginning of the year to now, the end of the year, my writing process and skills have dramatically changed. My writing process coming into junior year was not vigorous; I would not begin the pre-write and just go straight into the writing process. Regrettably, I would procrastinate till the last night to actually begin my writing, therefore, I would rush my writing process. In addition, my evidence and commentary was poor. With this being the process for me as a writer, of course, my worse essay was the first writing assignment, the non-fiction essay. This piece of writing was a mess and I am pretty positive I did not even read over it after I was done. Luckily, I changed my habits over the course of the year and began organizing my time and writing better....

Reflection Essay

...As I was picking my freshman courses during the summer, I had to enroll in a required ENG 105 course. Immediately, I thought that this course would be easy because all we will do is write essays. I thought I would be fully prepared by just going over Grammar rules and standardized test tips. In retrospect, after I have attended the class for almost the entire semester, I never expected to learn a new process of writing. During my time at high school, we never went over multiple stages of reflections, revisions, or writing skills. I usually just wrote for my enjoyment or for an assignment. I strongly believe that if I had learned these processes in high school, my papers would have benefitted greatly. As this semester comes to an end, I look back at everything I have accomplished in this class. I have acquired many writing techniques through annotations, in – class assignments, and multiple essays. Because of this, I have improved tremendously as a writer. Throughout the time I have spent in this writing course, I was reminded of how effective writing can be. As I further analyze my writing, I realized that I have learned how to become a real writer. The essays included will demonstrate the tremendous amount of strength I have gained in writing this semester. I believe that I am good organizing my writing in terms of placement and topics of each body paragraph. An example of this is in my first essay about my literacy sponsors. I organized the essay by beginning each body paragraph...
