... in my opinion, the key issue regarding Thomas Green’s (TG) career crisis is the conflict with Frank Davis (FD). However there are some relevant facts that ought to be mentioned for proper understanding. Shannon McDonald (SM), Vice President at Dynamic Displays, had promoted TG from Account Executive to Senior Market Specialist for the Eastern Region. He was working in the company for a short period of time, though, despite being account executive for about 6 years in his previous work, the way he was promoted wasn’t clear and didn’t respect the office politics. Looking through the TG path to Senior Market Specialist (SMS) we observe that when an account executive is interested in joining the marketing team, the office politics says that usually first the person moves to a market specialist position where he stays for some years in the field to acquire some expertise and then becomes able to reach the status of a SMS. This proves that TG was getting an unusual opportunity, under SM “wing”, perhaps the fact of being from the same state (Georgia) and in the same college may have had some influence. On the other hand TG’s hunger for power when he became aware of a position for a SMS may also have caused him to cajole her into promoting him. At the end, SM was responsible for creating a difficult situation. Nominating TG without FD’s approval might have triggered an unhealthy working relationship. This because FD expected to chose the new SMS and he wouldn’t have chosen TG. However...

...“too big to fail.” In a wide-ranging interview during his last days at Treasury, he kept returning to what has become one of his signature themes—the importance of putting “policy ahead of politics.” All too often, in his view, the best economic policies have enormous up-front political costs. We began by talking about the financial crisis of 2008. MARCH 8, 2013 NATE COHN OTHER STORIES FROM LA: Your predecessor Hank Paulson in his book describes how at the height of the crisis he would have sleepless nights, worrying that a giant financial collapse was going to occur on his watch and that he would go down in history as the Herbert Hoover of the current era. Your colleagues all say you are remarkably calm, even in the middle of a crisis. TG: Well I was very worried throughout that period of time. Starting in August of ’07 I Could North Korea Nuke Washington? MIKE MADDEN Adios, Presidente NATE COHN had moments of deep, serious concern about the future. The hardest part for me was that period between when we knew we faced an existential threat of collapse but before we figured out what we were going to be able to do. Before we figured out the contours of our plan. LA: Was that from Lehman...

...Catalina Torres Perez Section A1 The Monk and The Riddle 1. What was surprising or different about this book relative to what you know about entrepreneurship? When we think about entrepreneurship books, the first thing that usually comes to our mind is a technical book with instructions on what to do and not do in order to become a successful entrepreneur. What I found fascinating about this book is that the author, instead of giving a list of “must do´s”, is able to connect with the reader trough story-telling and personal experiences, and arise key questions that every entrepreneur must answer before and during a business development in order to be successful. In other words, The monk and The Riddle is no about “how” but about “why” and the importance of passion and vision when it comes to be an entrepreneur. Even if the book does give some specifics techniques that any entrepreneur can use to increase its chances of success, the central themes of the book are existential and philosophical. 2. What did the book teach you about different approaches at entrepreneurship and at being an entrepreneur? One important message of the book is the explanation of VCs´ perspective towards business opportunities and entrepreneurship. VCs are driven for risky ideas that have the potential to become leaders, but most importantly, they invest in the team and in the team´s passion. The team needs to have a combination of soft and hard skills, in order to be able to successfully develop and...

...right culture is important in the start-up of a company. The company that the research is been done on is Alstom. Research Background * Alstom is a multinational company which is a world leader in transport infrastructure, power generation and transmission. Alstom is in 70 countries worldwide and has 93,000 employees. This research is been done on Alstom Transport Global Solutions (TGS) maintenance .This is a part of the transport infrastructure division of Alstom. This part of Alstom is in accession and is relative small with only four sites at present worldwide (Barcelona, Athens and Dublin). But there are three more sites coming online in 2011 Jerusalem (Israel), Algiers (Algeria) and Rheims (France) and five more in tender. * As more sites are coming on line this is leading to problems for Alstom TGS maintenance. As they are having to set up organisations from the ground up in these new countries and having to adopted to the different countries and trying to adopt the best practices into these new sites and learn from the mistakes on other sites. * To counter this Alstom TGS France have setup a program called the IM2k (infrastructure mobilisation maintenance kit) program to try to rectify this problem this is a mobilisation kit for new projects. The IM2K takes the best practices from all the sites and put them together to create a kit for the start-up of new project. This covers every angle of HR, Finance, Engineering, Legal and production. But one part they...

Majority of the Youth segment tends to be more tech savvy, early users of new technology, high user of data services (SMS) and uses mobile phone as the primary mode of communication. GrameenPhone launched a youth...

...break away from the parent that is the creation of an individual brand would not be possible for Marriott in this case. Primarily because here the consumer is looking for her needs to be met within the universe of Marriott-backed service guarantee. The “endorsement” is necessary. In effect, branding strategies must be guided by, as well as geared towards, achieving a larger goal. Let us consider the examples of telecommunications player Tata DoCoMo and two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto, two brands that have chosen to take completely opposite routes around the same time to illustrate the dos and don’ts of the branding journey. And yet, each has valuable lessons in store for future managers. One versus many The Strategist looks at the recent experiences of TataDoCoMo and Bajaj Auto to check if the textbook assumptions about umbrella versus multiple branding stand true on the ground MASOOM GUPTE he standard view of business growth is that growth is always good, bigger is always better and that companies must grow or die. While every company aspires to grow its business, an expanding business brings with it a host of new risks: too many people, too many locations, too many products and at times, too many brands T to contend with. At least for marketing managers the choice is clear: they have to decide whether they prefer the simplicity of unified or umbrella branding or the frenetic juggling of a multi brand portfolio. The choice appears simple but it is not one that can be settled...

...intimidating—but it's one of the most satisfying projects a tech enthusiast can take on. Being more of a software gal than a hardware geek myself, I was the only Life hacker editor who had never built a PC from scratch. So when I needed a new PC late last year, I took the plunge and built my custom system. I'm so glad I did—the project turned out to be one of my proudest accomplishments of 2010. If you've cracked open your PC before to install a new hard drive or TV capture card, but you've never built a whole new system from the ground up, it's not as difficult as you might think. Here are my notes for first-timers who want to build instead of buy their next computer. Why Build Instead of Buy "But computers are so cheap these days," you say. "Why waste the time and energy building your own system when you can get a great machine fully assembled and shipped to your door?" That's a great question. Building your own PC will not save you time. It might save you money, but that's not even the best reason to do it. For me, it was a fantastic hands-on educational experience. It gives me a deep sense of satisfaction every single day when I press the power button on my tower, watch it light up, and know that I plugged in the wire that goes from that light to the motherboard. Building your PC takes the mystery out of what's going on inside that black box you spend hours on per day. There are other good reasons to build instead of buy, too. With your own build...

...process in a publicly founded start-up-program in Austria. The results where compiled into the MBA master thesis Entrepreneurship with Effectuation: Testing an Innovative Approach to Business Start-UpSupport (Faschingbauer 2008). In this paper, I would like to present the outcomes after introducing the effectual “Bird-in-Hand” principle to a group of seven novice entrepreneurs in the process of their start-up preparation. 1 Abstract of my master thesis The support structures for business start-ups in Austria are based on causal assumptions about how one should start a business. One starts with the recognition of an opportunity, which needs to be concretized and developed through analysis and planning. According to the effectuation framework by Saras D. Sarasvathy (Sarasvathy 2008), expert entrepreneurs choose a radically different way. Effectuators allow goal ambiguity, they prefer partnerships and alliances to competitive strategies, make use of risk reducing schemes and opt for controlling the future instead of relying on predicting it. In my thesis, the learnable and teachable elements of effectuation were practically tested in a training scheme with entrepreneurs during start-up preparation. It was shown that effectuation training can directly influence the entrepreneurs’ thinking and acting. There where apparent effects in the diversity and the variety of their goals, the establishment of partnerships, precommitments with other stakeholders, risk-reducing behavior based on...
