1.McCarthyism is when you say something to somebody and accuse them of something the people will believe the accuser and not the accused because they deny the accused crime and it makes them look more guilty. An example of McCarthyism is in the Crucible, somebody would accuse somebody else of being a “witch” and the accused person denied of being a witch and then that person would lose his land and die in the same process such as john proctor.

The red scare was a time period when fear of communism was spreading around and was getting more and more people of communism. Communism is the same as being called a “witch” according to the Crucible. The United States was involved in the whole red scare time period because i think that the red scare started somewhere in the United States. It affected people in america because people were being accused of being a communist and if they didn’t admit to being a communist, the people would be killed i think probably by being hung up.

Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” is similar to the Red Scare/ McCarthyism because the whole situation was based on who was being accused of being what and in the Crucibles case, people were being accused of being witches and in the red scare act thing they were being accused of being communist. It is also similar because if you did not confess to being a “witch” or a “communist”, then they would take away your property and kill you. The difference between them that i noticed through the play was that there was an affair involved well at least the ages were different but that’s what i noticed. An example of this is that when somebody didn’t confess, they did die by getting hung. I’m pretty sure that during the red scare they were hung also. The last thing that i remember is that towards the end of the Crucible, Giles Corey was the one that said “ more weight” when they were pressing stones

...Agenda-setting Weaver D H, Graber D, McCombs M, Eyal C 1981 Media Agenda Setting in a Presidential Election: Issues, Images and Interest. Praeger, New York M. McCombs Agendas: Political The political agenda is the set of issues that are the subject of decision making and debate within a given political system at any one time. Significant research specifically on the topic of agenda setting, as opposed to decision making, dates mostly from the 1960s. Early studies of agenda setting were quite controversial because they were often presented as critiques of the pluralist studies of the 1950s and 1960s. Truman (1951) mostly ignored the issue of who set the agenda of political debate. Dahl (1956) discusses the matter in mentioning that ensuring that no group have control over the range of alternatives discussed within the political system is a requisite for democracy. In his study of New Haven he explicitly raises the question of agenda setting, noting that with a permeable political system virtually all significant issues would likely come to the attention of the elites. ‘Because of the ease with which the political stratum can be penetrated, whenever dissatisfaction builds up in some segment of the electorate party politicians will probably learn of the discontent and calculate whether it might be converted into a political issue with an electoral pay-off’ (Dahl 1961, p. 93). In Dahl’s view, then, any issue with a significant potential following in the public would likely find...

...RURAL TO URBAN MIGRATION IN CHINA 1. REASONS * http://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/chinas-young-rural-urban-migrants-search-fortune-happiness-and-independence : * Interestingly, being tired of school was one of the most frequent answers to the primary migration motivation question, surpassing economic reasons. Many of our interviewees expressed little interest in school and did not complete their compulsory nine years of education before migrating. A secondary reason emerged, however, for not finishing school: the inability or unwillingness to pay for schooling when job opportunities in cities became available. After dropping out, the Chinese school enrollment structure all but precludes youth from going back to school and continuing their education where they left off. * Many interviewees also mentioned the attraction of city life, broadcast as exceptional and exotic by both earlier migrants returning to the village and the media, as a primary motivator in their decision to migrate. A related motivator is the desire for material things and luxury items available only to urban workers * http://projectpartner.org/poverty/untold-story-chinas-rural-urban-migration/ * About 362 million Chinese live on less than $2/day. With most of these poor living in rural areas, the need for income drives them to areas with a promise of new income. * Rural Chinese live a mainly agrarian lifestyle, farming the land and raising livestock. Japanese Falling Asleep on Meetings

...Fall Asleep In Meetings? According to Rochelle Koop the reason why Japanese fall asleep in meetings is because “Japanese believe that by closing their eyes, they can hear more effectively, because they are screening out the visual stimulus and focusing only on the sound” (Koop, 2011, p.109). After I was reading this case study, and I wondered what would be my reaction if people stayed silent after I spoke? A lot of things came through my mind. For example, as a Hispanic I would think that Japanese falling asleep during my speech is rude and disrespectful. Probably, I would walk away and leave the office. But I have to consider that not all cultures and customs are the same as ours. On the other hand, I would put my mind working and begin thinking that Japanese are probably evaluating my speech, are visualizing my ideas, or that like the author states, “I’m so boring that this key person is sleeping” ( Koop, 2011, p.109). I have to think that in the business world, I might find people that will like my speech and others that won’t. As I always say that this world everything is not rosy. I might have my ups and downs, but always with a positive mind. I will try to make a better speech for the people and that I will make sure that they don’t stay silent. People’s opinion is...

A Visit from the Goon Squad Commentary

...Egan manipulates PowerPoint through the positioning of text boxes, shading, and text to illustrate Ally’s devotion. Egan uses PowerPoint through the positioning of text boxes to show Ally’s desire to please. The structure of this slide is that it goes from title, to everything in the widest text box, to everything in the middle text box, to everything in the smallest text box. This creates a dynamic similar to that which one experiences when they visualize focusing. The titles of the text boxes help give a quick summary, and a general idea, of the flow of this slide. The title of the largest text box is, “I keep it on my windowsill. It’s made of apricot shells.” This text box is all about the thing itself, giving the reader all of the background knowledge necessary to understand what this toy horse is. The middle text box’s title is, “After Dad and Mom found each other again, she packed up her life in New York and met him overseas.” This text box tells the story of her parents in the past, giving the reader some more information. The smallest text box is titled, “I still play with the horse sometimes, alone in my room.” This text box shows the reader the present, and is the most focused box. As one can tell from the titles, the boxes become more and more focused, and Egan’s positioning of the boxes helps the reader experience this narrowing of focus by going from the outside to the core of the...

Carvin vs. Arkansa Power and Light

...Case Study 4 CARVIN vs. ARKANSA POWER AND LIGHT, 14 F.3d 399, 1993 U.S. Court of Appeals for Eighth Circuit You be the Judge By: Jenny Wagner December 23, 2009 Did the easement relieve Arkansas Power and Lights from liability for flooding? Yes, Arkansas Power and Light should not be held liable for damage to property cased by flooding where an easement existed. In 1923-1947 Arkansas Power and Light (AP&L) constructed several dams on two Arkansas lakes, Hamilton and Catherine. AP & L obtained “flood easements” on property adjoining the lakes. AP&L sold lake side property and kept the easement in force. These flood easements permitted AP&L to “clear of trees, brush, and other obstruction and to submerge by water” certain acreage, which was described exactly, AP&L properly recorded the easements and when the current landowner bought lakeside property they were aware of the documents (Beatty, 2009, p. 455). In May of 1990, extraordinarily heavy rains caused water to reach the highest levels ever recorded. To prevent flooding to a wider area, AP&L opened the gates of Carpenter Dam causing Lake Catherine to flood which caused damage to several houses built on AP&L’s easement. Several home owners’s subsequently sued AP&L for causing the damage. AP&L should not be held liable for the damage caused by the flooding because the sole purpose for having the easements was to allow AP&L to flood the property. An easement gives one person the...

...COM 101 Essay 2 – Are We Desensitized? LENGTH: 2 -3 Pages (aim for the very bottom of the 2nd page at least) DUE DATE: Rough Draft: Thursday, 10/1 on BB Final Draft: Tuesday, 10/13 on BB ASSIGNMENT: With our current section of articles, we’ve been discussing the concept of whether or not the younger generation (a.k.a. you guys) has been desensitized to things going on in the world. We’ve talked about this potential problem through a few different perspectives. We examined the argument about whether or not we’re desensitized to violence or death due to violent media, like video games. Then, we discussed whether or not we’re desensitized to suffering due to a feeling of helplessness, such as the belief that we can’t change things like economics or the government. Finally, we talked about technology and whether or not it has, in a sense, desensitized us to one another in the way that we interact thanks to new technologies like social media and cell phones. So, for your second essay, you’re going to answer the question of whether or not you believe the current generation is desensitized. However, in order to keep the paper focused and short (since it’s only 2-3 pages), choose just one of the perspectives to argue with or against. The perspective you choose will also determine which articles you use in your essay (you must use AT LEAST ONE). It breaks down much like this: Violence/Death – Narvaez, Jones, Eler Helplessness/Ineffectiveness – Leonhardt, McClelland...

Business Culture in Swiss

...Business hierarchy in Switzerland The Swiss appreciate sobriety, thrift, tolerance, punctuality and a sense of responsibility. This is reflected in the way they do business. The business climate is very formal and conservative and companies are structured in the traditional vertical manner.  The culture of companies can vary somewhat, depending on whether they are in the German, French or Italian areas of Switzerland. Overall, one can say that decisions are taken at the top of the organisation. In most organisations employees have little responsibility, although this differs from one company to another.  The many international companies in Geneva have a more American management culture, they are less hierarchic and employees hold more responsibility. Strategy Generally, the management of an organisation is at large responsible for the planning. Most companies use detailed planning with a tight schedule, although organisations in the French and Italian areas may have a more laid-back approach to strategy. Most of the planning is long term. Swiss business meetings Meetings are generally impersonal, brisk, orderly, planned and task-oriented. It is important to prepare yourself in advance of a business meeting.  The Swiss tend to get right down to business after a few minutes of general discussion. Be aware of the fact that non-verbal communication, such as body language, is very important and varies from region to region in Switzerland. Note that organisation,...
