Guatemala 2016 Imagine packing a bag, and leaving behind everything you know. Imagine leaving behind the comfort of a heated home, a kitchen at your disposal, and leaving behind the comforts of a first world country. Imagine being five thousand feet above sea level, the air is thin, now imagine also having asthma. Imagine being surrounded by three active volcanoes, each you can see, and one begins the process of eruption. For me, I don’t have to imagine, I have done that. Last year, from January 15-24, I left behind everything I knew, and I went to Mixco, Guatemala.
Last year in January, I had the privilege of going to the country of Guatemala with a team of seven other members. While there, we were building a church for a local village, Lo …show more content…
Starting at age 12 is when most people in Guatemala own or carry a weapon (Info Please). When Walter asked this question, my heart sank, I knew exactly why he was asking, this kid who had little to nothing, one of the happiest kids I had ever met, was terrified to go into town, leaving his village was something he did not do often because of the dangers of the surrounding country. While I was there, I witnessed some dangers that in Canada, would never be acceptable. I saw a woman on the highway, side straddling a motorcycle, holding a baby and a chicken. She wasn’t holding on to the bike much, and she wasn’t even wearing a helmet. This was when I first realized how differently the rest of the world works from …show more content…
During our down time, Kevin, a teacher in the Kawartha district, helped me study for my upcoming exams. Luckily for me, he is an English and History teacher, the two exams that were stressing me out the most that semester. While studying, I got a scare when we were told some news for the first, and unfortunately not the last, time; we would be unable to fly home. The volcano had begun the process of eruption. There was too much ash in the air and would obstruct the view of pilots. No planes were flying in or out of Guatemala

Personal Narrative: My Trip To Guatemala

...the vast Lake Atitlan, Guatemala’s natural beauty is clear. But, during my stay in the country, I came to realize that Guatemala’s natives too, radiate a certain beauty, much like the environment surrounding them. This inner beauty revealed itself through a handful of meaningful encounters, turning the 2017 Jesuit Medical Society Mission Trip into an experience I will not soon forget. My trip consisted of a 4 night stay in the city of Sololá, a capital city lying at the heart of the department of Sololá, Guatemala. A strip branching out from northern tip of Lake Atitlan, Sololá (the department) is home to about 30,000 people, primarily speaking Spanish,...

Personal Narrative: My Trip To Guatemala

...Guatemala city , Guatemala “Why should I go to Guatemala and Dubai?”, is something you might ask. Well, they both bring wonderful warm weather. You can do so many activities like swimming and bike riding. If you live in a place that has bad weather you should take a vacation to these places. I chose Dubai and Guatemala. I chose Guatemala because I admire the historic background it has. Even though you're on a vacation you can still learn something . I chose Dubai because I like the fact that the city uses technology to lead its life. Also that it is so advanced in using technology. Now I had to plan my trip. First, I picked the flight and made a map plan for what I was doing. Then, I calculated the price of everything. Then, I found out more info about what the city facts are. I had shirts and shorts. I had sandals. I had some of my electronics. I had hats and a gigantic water bottle. Last, I had brought sunscreen and bathing suits. I also brought hygiene products to get ready in the morning. I woke up in the morning. I am excited for what I was about to do...

Personal Narrative: My Mission Trip To Guatemala

...On this trip God has revealed to me a lot about myself and what I am capable of doing if I let him have control instead of relying only on myself. This mission trip really helped me to give control to God for example I always get nervous when it comes to speaking about personal maters or praying in front of people who I don’t know but after a couple days in Guatemala I told myself that I would give all my worries and insecurities to God. It was after I did this that I realized that only relying on my own strength was preventing me from serving others to my full potential. Proverbs 3:5 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding”. I also learned a lot from the people at the orphanage in Guatemala just...

Guatemala Mission Trip

...Out of all of my memories throughout my life, I think my mission trip to Guatemala would be the most memorable. It has to be the most memorable because I experience a lot of new things while being in a different country. Since I have barely ever been out of the state of Indiana, let alone the country until the past summer. Never had I ever been on a plane, never been through an airport, and never did I expect to get sick because I went too long without food. Of course since it was my first plane ride I was terrified, I held my mother’s hand while I said a little prayer. My mom was the only one out of her, my dad, and me that had ever been on a plane. She laughed because my dad was more worried than I was. My dad got the window seat, while I had the aisle seat....

How To Write A Mission Trip Essay

...Imagine being subjected to the solitude of the mountains, going a week without a proper toilet, clean water, or even cell service. Walking miles upon miles, in seemingly hellish temperature just to do something for someone else. Welcome to my journey last February. Roughly a year ago, I endured a week-long Mission Trip in Guatemala. First reading that thoughts probably came up along the lines of "oh that's neat, but what's so fun about that?" For one second, stop thinking about whatever you're thinking and picture this. A hot, quiet day with the sun beating down on your skin. You're sitting under a luscious green tree trying to find as much shade possible while you watch everything go on around you. Children, barely clothed and barefoot laughing...

Nevertheless, my father, as the big fan he was, decided to give me a present that could involve me in the “soccer craziness” and still keep me amused: a world cup calendar where I could write the scores and statistics from each match. I was enchanted with the gift; it gave me some really enjoyable evenings, calculating the possible combinations of results for each team to qualify to the next round. At that time, it was just another way of entertaining me, but little did I know those were going to be the first steps in this wonderful world of mathematics – and further sciences....

...Se Habla Espanol. Student: Gonzalo Gomez. Professor: Dorothy, Valentine. Course Title: English Composition April 17, 2013 “ Se Habla Espanol” is one of the best essays I have read in my life time because I can relate a lot to it. This essay was written by Tanya Maria Barrientos. This essay will help you see the struggles she had to over come while growing up in The United States and not speaking Spanish her native Language. Mrs Barrientos was born in Guatemala and was raised in El Paso TX. When she was 3 years old her family brought her to The United States. Her parents decided that they were only going to speak English in her household. Her parents had decided that the only way her and her brother could fit-in in the Anglo society was by only speaking English regardless of their Hispanic appearance. She wrote about a time when her parents took her one week late to school because they were on vacation. “At the school's office the registrar frowned when they arrived.” She told them “ you people. Your children are always behind, and you have the nerve to bring them late?” I personally been through that similar situation during my school years while growing up. I love her mothers response when she says “ My children will be at the top of their classes in two weeks.” I bet that took the registrar off track. Since she was young she thought that speaking Spanish meant various things. One of the things was that Spanish meant being poor. Another thing was that it meant...

Comparing My Migration To Miami

...way, immigrants are found throughout the world adjusting to their new lives in territories they have never experienced. Being an immigrant in Miami is an extremely common find since Miami is known as the melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. This includes non-immigrants since they also contribute to the pot of diversity in Miami. Therefore, being an immigrant or not being an immigrant in Miami is not a special occurrence, however, an immigrant in other locations has the potential of being special. When I was six years old, I boarded a flight from Cuba to Miami. It was the first flight I have ever experienced. Somehow, I still faintly remember the coast of Florida coming into my sights on that plane trip. When I landed, I was an official immigrant of the United States of America. After that, I lived my life as a normal American citizen in Miami. I never got made fun of in school for being Cuban since about a third of the school was Cuban. The other two thirds consisted of other Hispanic origins such as Puerto Rico,...

Se Habla Espanol

...English Composition “Se Habla Espanol” Summary and Personal Response In the essay "Se Habla Espanol" by Tanya Maria Barrientos, she identifies her struggles of being a Latina native who does not speak the language. From Guatemala, Tanya came to the United States at three years old, in 1963, with her family and gave up communicating in Spanish quickly. Her parents determined that their children would only speak, read, and write English to fit into what they called the “Anglo Society” (Barrientos, 2011). In her younger years, Tanya herself believed that if she fit in with this society, she could escape the Spanish stereotypes. At sixteen, Tanya’s father decided to send her to Mexico to help her see that being called Mexican was not an insult but more of an honor. Tanya was reluctant to go, but when she did, she found out that she loved the environment and culture. Sending her to Mexico gave her a new sense of pride that she didn't exactly know how to sustain. The author opens the essay registering for a Spanish class for the sixth time. According to Tanya in the wake of expressing her last name, she naturally heard that snippet of delay from the other man on the telephone. She reveals how she feels when people see her or hear her last name, they automatically expect her to speak Spanish. Tanya and her family came to the United States in 1963. Immediately at the age of three both of her parents decided that their children would defy the odds of their Guatemalan culture and...

Honduras

...Honduras is a small country based in Central America; it is about the size of Tennessee. It borders the Caribbean Sea and is between the countries of Guatemala and Nicaragua. This country was once part of the Spanish empire and became an independent nation in 1821. It’s population consisted of seven percent of Mayan Indian descendants, ninety percent of Mestizos (indigenous Mayan mixed with Spanish and Europeans), along with 2 percent of blacks, and one percent of whites. Honduran terrain consist largely of a mountainous interior with coastal plains lining it lower perimeter. The official language is Spanish, yet dialects in Mayan and African do exist in various isolated regions. The citizens of Honduras live in mostly small rural areas in family units having the same neighbors for years. There are a few small metropolitan areas, the two largest being its capital, Tegucigalpa, and San Pedro Sula. The national religion is Roman Catholic, however, there is much credit given to its past culture infused with Mayan lore. Financially, Honduras is the second poorest nation in Central America and one of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. It relies heavily on its agricultural exports, mostly of bananas and coffee. Most of its economic growth depends on the United States economy. There is a large divide in the small rich upper class and the rest of its residents which remain in poverty. Most of the decisions are made by the affluent ruling class, and based...
