...Yellow In this short story, “Yellow”, Peter Carty confronts Man with the fear that persists in the emptiness of the unknown. Through the experiences of the main character, Jon a second-string writer of a magazine in London, Peter Carty reveals human nature under pressure, whether it is in the deep blue sea or in the face of suppressed reality factors. The story is set in Egypt as we hear in the first sentence: “Welcome to Egypt! Welcome to Egypt.” And Jon, the protagonist, is the only person the reader gets to know. Jon is on a business trip to Egypt where he is going to write an article. He does not volunteer, but felt obliged to do so by his editor. This is clearly reflected in his attitude towards the whole course. The first challenge is to put on the gear and go underwater. After almost drowning, Jon goes back to his room and drinks a bottle of gin. After he has completed the pool exercises, he and his fellow student, Brian, set out to the sea to practice switching their mouthpieces. Once again, he fails to complete the task and is encountered with the loathed emptiness of the deep. He makes an attempt to reach the surface and in the last minute, Berto, the coach, grabs him and thrusts a mouthpiece in his mouth. The next day, on the way to the bay, he reflects upon his life and considers the possibility of surrendering to his fears as he descends in the water. As a result of this thought, he removes his mouthpiece and attempts suicide. Jon is harshly introduced in...

...with the same ignorance but towards my family or me. My own experience with racism was at a family party with the music playing with no care in the world, the air was fresh and crisp like a newly ripened apple, all of the children playing in the grass having fun, the adults sitting around the picnic table doing what they do, and in the center of it all was a table and at the center of that table was me and my uncles; Rene, Joel, Henrique. We were just talking, in Spanish, about how full we were with the food and like an anonymous wind blew him in out of nowhere, a man stood in the middle of the party like a statue short on one side, tipsy, and one half of his shirt tucked in and bottle in hand, with glazed eyes he glared at us almost in a panorama. Looking like he was about to keel over he opened his, what I know now as a gaping hole of a mouth, the second he spoke nothing but hate flew from his mouth racial slurs came out targeted at everyone at the party even my youngest cousin got cursed at by this vulgar man. At the end of his tantrum he collapsed on the grass, at that moment I rushed to see who my racial attacker was and before me lying unconscious reeking of booze and other fluids was a white male with a beard, which looked like he never heard of a razor before. Clawing his way through the crowd of relatives my uncle Rene picked up the man on two his shoulder to a lone picnic table and set him down, he told us to get a cool bottle of water for the man, but of course we all...

...because it seemed easier to just pick a book that was on Moodle, so I could be sure that it would be okay to use it. My expectations were not very high because it is a pretty old book and I never really like old books. Summary Chapter one – Down the Rabbit Hole A little girl named Alice and her sister were sitting on a bank when Alice saw a white rabbit with pink eyes running close by her. At first, she didn’t think much of it, but when it took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket she realised this wasn’t natural and she ran after it. She saw the rabbit disappear into a hole under the hedge and jumped right after it. After a very long fall, she ended up in a dark hall with a table and a tiny golden key on top of it. The key belonged to a tiny door but she knew she would never fit through. Then she found a bottle labelled with the words ‘DRINK ME’. When she took a sip it appeared to be a shrinking potion and she shrunk until...

...In this weeks novel Kirk? Krak! By Edwidge Danticat is composed of a couple different short stories, there all different, but have the same theme among them, Heartbreak. Heartbreak is sensed throughout this whole book and is in my mind the biggest overall theme in the novel. This novel always keeps you guessing on what’s going to happen but ultimately each story ends with heartbreak. The first story in the novel “The Children in The Sea” is about a young couple that are in love but their parents disagree with their love. “ And just as the baby’s head sank, so did hers. They went together like two bottles beneath a waterfall. The shock last only so long. There was no time to even try and save her”(Danticat 26). I found this quote to be important because of the imagery that I saw while reading this part. During this part the girl who is in love with the guy she commits suicide. Her baby dies then she puts the baby in the water and she follows never to be seen again. This story starts out with love but ends with death and heartbreak....

...I sat on my bed, staring at my overstuffed duffel bags, wondering if I had packed enough belongings for the trip I was about to endure. “Well, if I am forgetting something, someone else is sure to have it”, I said to myself as I curled up between my many pillows and fuzzy blankets to settle down for a good night’s sleep. After waking up from a night filled with dreams of soaking up some sunshine on sandy beaches, I turned to my alarm clock to see what time it was. The blinking screen read 5:53 AM, June 3, 2017. So I rolled out of bed, and got dressed in some comfortable clothes. I was filled with excitement and nervous energy while I devoured a nutritious breakfast of blueberry oatmeal before proceeding to finish getting ready. “Abby! C’mon! We have to go or you’re gonna be late!” yelled my mother, who is a tall woman in her forties with short, flaxen hair and greenish-gray eyes. “I’m brushing my teeth! Be down in a minute!” I called...

...Feather girls - analysis and interpretation The short story 'feather girls' by Claire Massey, from 2010 is a very imaginary and well written story, which leaves you behind with the sensation of unknowing. I believe the text has a very deep meaning to it, which I will try to find. In the short story we meet a man called Bill. We can see from the text, that Bill is old "A collection of regulars cluttered the bar, all grey haired men similar age to him". Bill has a wife, who he does not see very often, as she has "flown off" by herself, as their children were grown. In the village, where the story unfolds it is common to give your wife a feather coat from feather girls, but Bill has fallen in love with a feather girl. The feather girl's name is unknown, but Bill and her have been seeing each other for a long time "All these years of going to meet her and yet still, every time, he felt like a lad. They have been doing the same thing over and over again, meeting each other at a local pub called the Hare and Anchor, eating vinegar crisps with salt "packet of salt and vinegar crisps. Here at the pub we are introduced to the landlady of the pub, Mary. Mary is the most interesting character in my opinion, because her curiosity about the couple is intriguing. Mary is described as stingy "Mary was stingy with the coal, still too early in the year for a fire whatever the chill in the air said". Mary is living in the past, and never throws anything away "Collections of one kind...

...Personalized Nutrition 2 Introduction Obesity has been a health problem in my family for generations. My great grandparents died before I ever had a chance to personally meet them but the pictures I have seen indicate that they both were obese. According to the WebMD body mass index for adults, my mother, her two brothers (my uncles), and her sister (my aunt), are all extremely overweight and considered obese in regards to their age, height and weight. My father left my mother when I was very young so I am unaware of any health or nutrition problems that concern me in regards to my father’s family history. My grandmother died of Coronary heart disease, which is an obesity related medical condition that develops when a combination of fatty material, calcium, and plaque builds up in the arteries that supply the heart with blood. My mother and my aunt both have constant lower back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. They both have had wrist and back surgery in order to relieve the pain/ fix the problem, but the doctor told them that their weight was the main issue. My uncles complain that their knees and back bother them all the time, and even though I am not a doctor, I know it is because they both weigh around 300 pounds. Personalized Nutrition 3 Identification of health problem In my younger days, before I had to give up my dreams and work full time, I played football, baseball, and basketball in high school. Needless...

...A vacation to remember In the start of the story, the main character described how he acted while he was in Bora Bora. He said he wasn’t shy to ask anyone for favors. He showed this through examples like how he asked the farmer if he could help and the bus drive tour with Teróo. When he asked Teróo if he could help out, at first she thought he was joking but in the end she agreed in exchange for a story about him. While the tour was going on, he said that he was from the Philippines which surprised Teróo because there he was the first Filipino she met. While talking and seeing the great sights of Bora Bora, they got to know each other better and eventually, Teróo invited him to sleep with her family and he gladly accepted. While on the boat to Huahine, Teróo’s hometown, he felt nervous because the boat ride was delayed due to the low tide. When he met Teróo’s daughter, Simone, he was immediately attracted to her. She told him that she was just finished high school and was going to college in U.C. Santa Barbara which was why she spoke English really well. When they got on the motorcycle, he that Simone made him wrap his arms around her waist. Usually, he felt awkward around girls. This was the time when he fell for Simone. When they got to Simone and Teróo’s house, he was surprised that it was different from the other islands. It didn’t have mountains and most of the houses were made with concrete. When Simone introduced him to her family, they immediately accepted him....

...diehard fans is best part of college sports. College football has gained the reputation for becoming the most celebrated sport. The best way to celebrate a college football game is tailgating. Tailgating and college football have become such a tradition that it is hard to see one happening without the other. Tailgating is a legendary activity that I could not wait to participate in. Surprisingly enough, I was able to find my way onto the tailgating scene for the University of Georgia football game. They were facing University of Tennessee which was a big rivalry in the south. Both of these teams compete in the South Eastern conference, also known as the SEC. The rivalry brought a lot of excitement around campus which meant heavy tailgating. I was brought up to speed on the tailgating by a Georgia alumnus. Thomas was the perfect person to give me the ultimate tailgating experience. Having no previous knowledge on the topic of tailgating, it was surprising to me that tailgating is a detailed process that started days before the event itself. I started my research on the first step of tailgating labeled the “pre-game”. The pre-game step for us started on a Thursday afternoon. We made on who was participating, where we were tailgating at, and what vehicles were being taken. For us, we would bring two four door trucks that could seat eight people total. There were seven total people in this group including me....

...helps keep your pet healthy, from smelling like a farm animal, and shedding all over the house. A smelly dog is not what you want sleeping at the end of your bed, or in my case snuggling next to you while trying to steal your pillows and blanket. When giving our boxer a bath, she seems to really enjoy it. However, our Lab, Jack, who should LOVE water, is another story. First, make sure you gather all of your supplies. Since Jack isn’t a fan of baths, we don’t bother trying to wrestle him in the tub. We wait for a nice day and put him in a baby pool outside. You’ll need: dog (or baby) shampoo, plenty of old towels, a hose, a short leash, an accomplice, and lots of patience. Remember, since Jack doesn’t like baths, you’ll need to be sneaky while trying to gather these items. If he sees the shampoo bottle or the baby pool you will end up playing hide-and-seek. By the time you finally find him, you’ll forget why you were looking for him in the first place. Now that you have your supplies (and hopefully Jack), lead him out to the backyard. Walk to the opposite side of the pool and use the leash to pull him in. He won’t like it, but if you’re using the leash, he won’t have much choice. Now that you have him in the pool, yell to your accomplice to turn the water on. Hose him down while trying to keep him from shaking all over you. At this point, you will probably be standing in the tub with him. Have your accomplice run and get...
