...phenomenon in which the greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in distress. Research into this tendency stemmed from a murder case from 1964. On March 13th, 1964, 28 year old Kitty Genovese was raped and stabbed to death in front of her apartment complex by Winston Moseley. The attack lasted over 30 minutes and was witnessed by numerous neighbors. At one point Genovese screamed, "Oh my God, he stabbed me! Help me!" One of the neighbors shouted at the attacker, "Let that girl alone!" Moseley ran away and witnesses observed Moseley enter his car and drive away, only to return ten minutes later. He searched for and eventually found Genovese, who was lying in a hallway at the back of the building where a locked doorway had prevented her from entering. He then further attacked Genovese, stabbing her several more times and raping her as she lay dying. Later, some onlookers stated that they thought they were overhearing a "lovers quarrel" whilst others, who realized that they were witnessing a crime but failed to report it, said they assumed someone else already had. When the killer was apprehended, and Chief of Detectives Albert Seedman asked him how he dared to attack a woman in front of so many witnesses, the psychopath calmly replied, "I knew they wouldn't do anything, people never do" (Seedman & Hellman, 1974). In the aftermath of this horrific murder, one question was asked and re-asked:...

...sightings in 593 BC, recorded in the Bible in the book of Ezekiel 1:16. Ezekiel talks of encountering a flying object near Cheber River Chaldea, in today’s Iraq. "Now as I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel upon the earth beside the living creatures, one for each of the four of them. As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction: their appearance was like the gleaming of beryl” (1, Ezekiel 1:16 English standard version, 2010). Perhaps it sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but many historians have taken this biblical account seriously. He described what he saw with words and phrases from the reality and time he was living in. Even so, there is enough information there to conclude that he was witnessing a craft of some kind and its occupants. There is also the famous story most people know of; the crashed UFO in Roswell, New Mexico that happened in July, 1947. This happened the same year Kenneth Arnold spotted nine mysterious, high-speed objects while flying his private plane near Mt. Rainier,...

...Week seven: What ethical issues have you seen in the clinical setting? How are these issues addressed? How do you feel about this? One ethical issues I have seen was with my patient . She was 65 year old woman who was in the hospital for Nausea and vomiting. She was in the hospital for about a week. I was getting the report from the pervious nurse and she constantly complained that the patient’s pain was in her head. She came to this assumption because she assumed that a hour or 2 after she received her pain medication. I had a very serious ethical dilemma about the nurses regards towards the patient. She had no right to determine if the patient was lying or not . Our job is to assess the patient and try to relive the patient’s pain by...

...Introduction Throughout the Introduction to Theology class we have covered a wide variety of topics. Today, we live in such a fast paced society that things often get overlooked. I will be discussing a few topics which I feel are important topics today. One of my topics is something that most of the people I know fear, death. Another important topic that will be discussed is the power of God. Death One of the greatest fears that most people have in their lives is death. I wonder why this is so? Do people mostly fear the way that they will die? Do they feel as if they haven’t accomplished everything they have wanted to in their life? I feel these things attribute to the fear that people have with death. There are several examples of death throughout the Bible. Thousands died from diseases, crimes, and committing sins which they were instructed not to do. One example of this is one of the Ten Commandments, thou shall not kill. So why is there so much murder that takes place throughout the Bible and in our world today? Do people not understand the magnitude of this commandment? I cannot attest to witnessing a murder myself but have seen several news reports on them. In fact the news is normally scattered with terrible news of death and murderers. Life is such a precious gift given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ they think it is something to which they show little value. One day, hopefully, more individuals will value life and the murdering that happens throughout...

...now a $20 million federal lawsuit against the school for negligence and rightfully so, because the most appalling part of this whole tragedy is the fact that Carmichael was only 13 years old. The lawsuit claims that several members of the school’s faculty witnessed the bullying and did not report it. It also states that an unknown staff member even filmed one incident and posted the video on YouTube (Kuo & Cooper, 2011). Unfortunately cases like this one are occurring far too frequently in our society, and the ages of these victims who commit suicide are dropping. Carmichael’s tragic ending is just one horrific example of what can happen when school officials choose to look the other way after witnessing bullying. The purpose of this proposal is to convince readers that school administrators need to actively identify and attend to the bully’s potential psychological issues, instead of focusing on the victim’s behavior. When faculty members ignore confrontations between students, they support the bully’s actions and force the target to carry another burden alone. I am not an expert on this topic, but I do have experience with being bullied and witnessing several altercations involving my sister. I know firsthand the negativity it can bring to a victim’s life and how discouraging it is when the school’s administrators choose to turn a blind eye. Contributions from education...

...others in a home situation. It is "the intentional and persistent physical, emotional or psychological and financial abuse of anyone in the home in a way that causes pain, distress or injury". It includes all partners either living together or apart, heterosexual gay or lesbian. Abusers and victims can exist in a home situation and can be of any age, sex, or profession. Any person can be a victim, there is no set of rules nor socio economic indicators that qualifies anyone to be a victim. Although most women and children are victims, men can also be abused in the home. In a recent UK Government report it was stated that one in four women were victims of abuse and one in six men. They are staggering statistics, if one was to apply them to the general population look around any room and think that one quarter of the women in that room are or were victims of domestic abuse. Another report commissioned by the MRCS stated that almost half (48%) of couples seeking counseling experienced domestic...

...responsibility (Christie & Jones, 2013). According to Christie & Jones (2013), senior nurses are culprits of initiating lateral violence towards novice nurses, which is very unfortunate because they are the future of nursing. “Studies estimate that 44% to 85% of nurses are victims of lateral violence and up to 93% of nurses’ reported witnessing lateral violence in the workplace” (Christie & Jones, 2013 p. 1) Lateral violence has resulted in “decreased sense of well-being, physical health complaints, sleep...

...Each year my family and I donate to the United Way Sharing Tree. This has been a yearly tradition for us for several years. Each member of the family picks a tag from the tree and we make a family day of shopping to purchase the items listed. I was once asked by a former employer if I would create “fake stories” and submit them to the United Way as part of the Sharing Tree. Since I was well aware of the charity I asked why the stories were fake and who would be receiving these items that were donated. The answer that I received was “they are for various clients in need, employees who are in need, and employees who deserve recognition for picking up extra shifts and going above and beyond.” I was completely shocked when I was asked to complete this task and even more shocked to know that they had been doing this for years. Some of the “stories” that were created from previous years were “single mom of 3 in need of household products, or college student in need of gas cards.” I can’t say that every tag was false because we did have employees who really were in need. However out of the 120 tags created, 75% were fake stories. The families or individuals who participate in the sharing tree are being tricked and lied to because they believe they are donating to that single mom in need of household supplies. This task went against everything I believed in. I knew it wasn’t an illegal act but it certainly wasn’t ethical or moral. Being a new employee and given instruction by my supervisor...

...LIBERTY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY Witnessing Report Number Three Submitted to Dr. Gene Jeffries in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of the course, EVAN 525-B08 Contemporary Evangelism By Stephen Mark Hayes March 6, 2016 This encounter happened two days ago. A nonbeliever friend of mine at work named Mike and I struck up a conversation while we were attending a class. We had talked some months earlier and I found out that he studies fourteen different religions and “preaches” (his words) about them to different groups. Our conversation started the other day with him asking me how my classes are going through Liberty University. Then, the topic changed to his religious views and what he “preaches”. He stated that he comes from a family of agnostics and atheists and he believes that no one religion is has all of the answers. I asked how he approaches salvation. He answered from “his understanding” of Christianity. He stated that there is two ways of salvation in Christianity. There is the Old Testament way and the New Testament way and he believes that there is a “swing” back to the Old Testament way of salvation. I politely interjected that the Old Testament was the old covenant between God and his followers and the New Testament is the new covenant and the only way to salvation. One must believe that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to salvation and eternal live. One must accept and believe that Jesus is God’s only...

...raised in the small town of Ripley, Mississippi, I was not exposed to happenings throughout the world for quite some time. I never imagined that anything could upset my perfect utopian world I thought to be true. However, my world turned upside down when I saw the world beneath the facade. Televised news reports of devastation, diseases, poverty, and war made my unworldly, simple-minded character begin to question the state of humanity. Even though the world was not as pleasant as I had dreamt it to be, I am able to find the silver linings in all the imperfect aspects. Hurricane Katrina, the pandemic Ebola outbreak, and the Paris terrorist attack have taught me more about solicitude and aid to others than awareness of catastrophic events....

...Describe the key characteristics of a whistleblower Person or any employee who reports the illegal activities occurring in an organization or who has insider knowledge of immoral, or illegitimate practices taking place in a business either through witnessing the behavior or being told about it. Such practices can include illegality, frauds, mismanagement or abuse of power. Whistleblowers can use different channels to report wrongdoings, including internal channels (i.e., within their organization, such as directly reporting misbehavior and incidents to their immediate supervisor, union representative, or human resources department) or external means (i.e., going outside their organization to, for example, a third party ombudsman, an external hotline, or an applicable government regulatory agency related to the type of wrongdoing behavior. Internal whistleblowing mechanisms for public companies must comply with the provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). Two of the many corporate governance provisions of SOX place whistleblower-friendly requirements on issuers. SOX section 301 requires the audit committee of every issuer to establish procedures for the receipt, retention, and treatment of complaints regarding accounting, internal control, or auditing matters, and to maintain the anonymity of employee complaints regarding accounting and auditing matters (i.e., the establishment of a whistleblower hotline). SOX section 806 provides protection for employees who blow...

... “Death at an Early Age” Author: Jonathan Kozol Task 608.2.2-01 part A Western Governors University Death at an Early Age., page 2 In this short essay we will review the content of the book, “Death at an Early Age” by Jonathan Kozol, as it relates to alternative viewpoints in education. We will include my personal perspective as a comparison to the authors perspectives, as well as how content relates to current educational trends, theory, and educational issues. The book “Death at an Early Age” authored by Jonathan Kozol is a first person testimonial to the tragic educational system nightmare experienced by Kozol in the Boston Public School system circa 1964. The book relates Kozol’s exposure to rampant racism, child abuse, and a failed educational system as a first year 4th grade teacher at an inner city grade school in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood. Kozol’s unmitigated descriptions of the events that he witnessed as well as his reiterations of the entrenched school policies, curriculum inadequacies, and resistance...
