...June 4, 2014 Family Should Come First Most of my earliest memories do not have my biological father in them, even though he lived less than a 5 minute walk away. I grew up in what is now considered to be a "broken home" environment. Back in the seventies I lived in a trailer court with my mom and her new husband, the infamous step-dad. Today my daughter placed 2nd place in a basketball tournament. It was easily the highlight of Thanksgiving break for our family. ...Association "You have cancer" are words that no one ever wants to have to hear. For the year, 2013 my community had 1057 new cases of cancer and 425 from cancer (Bolick 2014). In 2013 my community came together to create a local place for cancer patients, survivors, and their families known as the Anderson Cancer Association (ACA). The Anderson Cancer Association is important to me because I have seen firsthand how cancer affects the lives of others including my grandmother’s, know the organization’s revenue stays locally in Anderson, and have seen them cover the cost of items not covered by my grandmother’s insurance. Seeing firsthand how this organization works to better the lives of those in our community is amazing. I have always been active in planning events for the Anderson Cancer Association since I was in high school. My high school English teacher introduced me to the organization when our school was doing a fundraiser. I became dedicated to helping fight the fight. No matter what the needs of the patients or their families we did not mind sacrificing time because we all were making an enormous impact. The greatest part of it all was that it was made possible by our local community funding. I would see people that I knew come in for financial assistance, information on what to expect during treatments, or even just a simple hug and words of encouragement.
