In the development of my assessment one essay writing, I found it is imperative to have a sound grasp of knowledge of formal writing style, using prestigious language, standard systemic rules and grammatical structure. Additionally, after completing part B table, I found that predominantly it was through a hands-on process that I was able to develop my understanding of the features of the systemic rules and grammatical structures of the language. After receiving feedback from different grammar checker websites, I have searched online tutorials and university library books that could help me to improve my knowledge about applying systemic rules and grammar of the language. Through my process of exploration in the development of my writing skills, …show more content…
In addition, I discovered, ‘Writing Skills Handbook’ by John Barwick, ‘The Cambridge Guide to Australian English Usage’ by Pam Peters and ‘The Elements of Style’ by William Strunk Jr are useful books to improve my grammar knowledge, punctuation errors and formal writing style (Grellier & Goerke, 2014). Similarly, it was interesting to come across with LearnEnglish website (https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/english-grammar) by British Council included in the weekly set readings which explain the functions of parts of the language. In addition to this, I discovered, KISS Grammar site (https://www.kissgrammar.org/) is a useful website that helps to fix use of passive voice. Moreover, Writer’s diet (http://writersdiet.com/test.php) test also guides me to write a trim and concise piece of academic writing. Additionally, ‘Smart Thinking writer’s handbook’ provided by Smart Thinking (https://services.smarthinking.com/student/services/) tutor promotes me guidance to develop my grammatical errors and problematic sentence …show more content…
Additionally, I learned studying morphological and phonological spelling rules would help me to enhance my knowledge about spelling skills (Nunes, Bryant & Olsson, 2003). In addition this, I came across with Fun brain website (https://www.funbrain.com/games/spellaroo) which provides fun and useful online spelling game to improve spelling rules. Most importantly, from my personal experience, I discovered regular writing practice helps me to improve my writing skills. I learned that daily practice of writing small paragraph is helpful to apply punctuation rules such as a weekly task for different units or writing a diary. In this way, I receive feedback from my tutors and work on them. Now I maintain a notebook where I list my problematic areas, write examples, such as passive and active voice, wordy sentences, commonly misspelt and overused words so that in future I would not repeat

Vark Analysis

...VARK ANALYSIS VARK ANALYSIS BINDU PAUL Grand Canyon University: INSTRUCTOR: Cherryl Llanos 11/20/2011 VARK ANALYSIS There are several methods used to determine learning styles. A learning style is rather a description of process or preferences. One of the most commonly used learning style is Fleming VARK model. VARK stands for visual, auditory, reading, writing, and kinesthetic learners. This model focuses on the best way a student can learn and retain new information. When a student learns, his/her learning style preferences can be able to learn more effectively, store, and recall information being taught. As an author, my learning style was identified to ask modules of auditory, reading, and writing preferences. In the past, reading and writing was mainly the way to learn. According to VARK analysis, people have to incorporate auditory learning in order to effectively and efficiently learn that new things are better. Learning Style: Having an aural, reading, and writing categories as my strong points mean multi model. Aural means information being spoken from the internet, phone, group discussion ,lectures, and talking things through. My strongest point of learning is reading and writing. This means information being relayed as words. I read a lot in student period and write the notes that my teacher was teaching. I concentrate more in writing notes than listening to my teacher. I was more frustrated if I miss one note to write...

Learning Style

...My Learning Style Learning styles are part of a mental map that when dissected and analyzed, will help people to understand their learning anatomy, and hopefully will guide their future learning experiences to make the best use of their big and strong learning musculature. To start, the learning analysis and this writer learning styles and strategies will be introduced. Second, a comparison of my own and Vark’s analysis of strategies will be presented, and finally, an assessment of changes on study habits for this writer will be offered. First, our focus here will be the Styles included on the VARK analysis which questions are focus on the way we take-in and give-out information. These Learning styles are Visual, Aural, Red/Write, and Kinesthetic. My learning style is Multimodal (three model) with strongest points on the visual mode which was 12, kinesthetic 10, read/write 10, and Aural 4. As seen by the numbers, none of the three styles stands out. Translating this, it might take longer for this writer to feel confident about the understanding and retaining of the information because involves not only seen something, but , getting examples, pictures about it, writing about it and also having some practice or hands-on, that help to get the best of the learning endeavor. However this allows for flexibility of choosing the best styles for the specific learning experience. Definitely Aural learning style is not a great part of this student learning anatomy because she gets...

Eb White Education Analysis

...There are many ways one can interpret a piece of writing. It is necessary to take into account the style, voice, persuasion techniques, and many other tactics used to fully understand what the author is trying to get across. Selzer and I both did a separate analysis of EB White's article "Education." Our analyses varied in our thoughts on White's writing style. Both analyses mentioned White's use of ethos, pathos, and logos, but Selzer structed his differently and also included some more subjects.  First of all, Selzer and my own analysis have contrasting ideas about EB White's writing style. I believe that White was writing more of a descriptive piece, trying to evenly describe both the country school and the public school. Selzer claims that...

Poisonwood Bible Reflection

...As my junior year winds down, the final chapter of my book is about to unravel: senior year. However, before I start exploring my horizons, which is going to be filled with new opportunities and memories to be made, it’s best to reflect on my experience in AP Language and Composition with Mrs.Miles throughout junior year. These past 8 months were filled with enlightening experiences. From the discussions and articles of the week to the countless essays we had to write. I believe that Mrs.Miles really focused on our writing skills, which I am awfully grateful that she did. Mrs.Miles has assisted in my growth in writing; as my grammar has improved, including the use of commas, colons, and semicolons. In fact, I am now knowledgeable of the fact...

Vark Styles of Learning

...October 6, 2013 Vark Styles of Learning Analysis A learning style is a unique and specific ongoing process in every individual’s life. There are many different ways that people learn and it can vary greatly among individuals. Learning style is referred by Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork (2008) in their article Learning Styles: Concepts and Evidence “as the concept that individuals differ in regard to what mode of instruction or study is more effective for them”. There have been various models created to illustrate the different learning styles. The visual, aural, read and write, and kinesthetic (VARK) model, developed by Neil D. Fleming consists of a questionnaire that helps an individual identify how they process information. After the style of learning is identified, it suggests that will assist the individual in the learning process. Different types of learning styles include visual learners; these individuals learn best by looking at illustrations or watching videos. The next style is the auditory; these individuals learn better by being part of a discussion group or lecture. The reading/writing learners learn best by reading textbooks or taking notes. The last style is the kinesthetic learner; these individuals learn best by doing things, hands on. To enhance the quality of learning, individuals need to be aware of their style of learning. Summary of my Styles of Learning While some individuals rely on only one type of learning style, most learn through...

Alma College Student Analysis

...My first year at Alma College has been an eye-opening experience. I have learned a lot academically, about myself, and about life in general. As I progressed though the year my viewpoints had changed. I had many new experiences that broadened my horizon. My classes opened me up to knowledge I could apply to my life, that I found interesting, and benefitted me. I learned a lot about myself, including what I want out of my college experience, and what my passion is. Despite the numerous papers, multitudes of exams, tremendous amount of course work, and athletics I believe I have done well. One of the many demanding classes this semester was English 101. In this rigorous course, students were asked to gain rhetorical knowledge, engage in critical writing, perform research writing, and improve their style and grammar. These goals are closely related to those of the WPA Outcomes published by the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The WPA...

Vark Analysis

...Running head: VARK LEARNING STYLE VARK Learning Style Family health Promotion August 27, 2011 VARK Analysis Learning styles are different approaches or habits of learning. Learning styles define as the “composite of characteristic cognitive, affective, and physiological factors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how a learner perceives, interacts with, and responds to the learning environment”( Keefe 1979). Stewart and Felicetti (1992) define learning styles as those “educational conditions under which a student is most likely to learn.” Thus, learning styles are not really concerned about what we learn; it’s all about how we learn. Long time ago, education consisted of memorizing lessons, which means reading and writing, followed by more reading and writing. Learners had very few choices to meet their personal educational needs. There are various types of learning style now, but Fleming’s VARK model is the most frequently used learning style among the students. VARK stands for visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic learning. Summary of My Learning Style Identifying my way of learning may assist me to understand that others may approach the same circumstances in a different way from my own. Upon completion of VARK questionnaire, I realized that I have a multimodal (ARK) learning style in combination with a few of all styles. Multimodal learners need to use all of their learning styles and not just one with highest...

College Professors

...As I enter my first college class, my attention goes to Professor Feldman, a tall, slender woman in a loose pearl blouse with black dress pants. The combination of her graceful stance and scholarly presence distinguishes her already from the chaos of the lecture room. The calm demeanor spreads through the room as she gradually turns the lights down low, signaling the beginning of lecture, and gives life to the art historian’s companion, the slide projector. Her slow and steady speech is punctuated by inflections at nearly every other word and reflects her scholarly presence. She picks her words carefully and you can sense the moment’s thought before each. Her precisely chosen words make each one valuable as I frantically try to catch them all. Feldman incorporates her elevated vocabulary in daily speech and lecture, requiring that I form my own vocabulary list: mélange, koine, cache, lingua franca, etc. In spite of being intimidated by Professor Feldman’s scholarship, the fellow human being, Marian Feldman, shows through at times. She does not hesitate to admit “When did those excavations take place?” or “Who was that guy who ruled Babylon? I never remember that one.” At one point she might exclaim, “Well, it doesn’t matter anyway” followed by a signature chuckle. She welcomes corrections or additions by students, and some questions lead her to guiltily admit, “You caught me. I was trying to avoid that one because, well, we just don’t...

Vark Analysis

...Summary of the Identified Learning Style The Visual (Spatial) Learning Style is one of the identified learning styles according to the Vark Questionnaire. This helps the learner to reorganize and group comparable ideas easily, and to pay attention to meaning. Visual learners may likely use phrases like “let’s look at it differently or see how this works for you”. The story technique helps the visual learner to memorize content Next learning style according to Vark Questionnaire is Aural. This style likes noise and music and has rhythm. The Aural learner is a good listener and speaker. The learner here understands lectures better in group discussions through listening and speaking. The method of study here is use of repetition approach and gains from using mnemonic technique. The individual here assimilate and retain information linked to noise and sound rather than images. Another identified learning style is Kinesthetic which is more physical or hands-on process. Portfolio: Narrative Analysis

...Second Semester Final Exam: Portfolio A: Narrative/Descriptive Writing Parasailing (Vignette) Narrative and descriptive writing is the writing style I enjoy the most. The vignette I wrote about is a story that happened to me when I was younger and this kind of writing allows me to relive this memory on paper. I find this kind of writing easier to write and easy to relate to because it’s all about me. It is harder for me to write and relate to a book that we read in class since it isn’t about my personal life. This kind of writing style helps me reflect on the something I learned because I have seen how much I have grown this school year based off of what I wrote about and my writing style. This kind of writing style allows me to describe...

Vark Analysis

...VARK Analysis Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V Family-Centered Health Promotion September 21, 2012 L earning is only complete when an individual can reproduce the knowledge gained from educational institutions, self-study and observance. Retention of knowledge depends on the way students have gained the knowledge; learning style varies from person to person. One method that may be highly appealing to a particular student may not be appealing to another student. So learning style is a very subjective matter and there are different ways to categorize learning styles, this paper focus on VARK learning analysis quiz and learning styles as well as the implication of understanding an individual’s learning style. VARK abbreviation stands for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. VARK model is one of the most prevalent learning style analyzing tools. Neil Fleming developed it in 1987, to help students and others learn more about their individual learning preferences (Fleming & Mills, 2011). This methodology was the first organized arrangement of questions with ideal responses that could be used to identify students, teachers, and employers learning styles. Under Neil Fleming’s model, learners are identified according to their preferred learning style that are visual learning (images, films, pictorial representation), auditory learning (audio tapes, conversation, speeches), reading and writing (taking notes, manuals, creating list), or kinesthetic learning...

Vark Analysis

...Running head: VARK Analysis VARK Analysis: How Do I Learn Best? Jolanta Nietupska Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS-429v Date: January 21, 2012 Summary: VARK learning styles theories were designed by Neil Fleming in 1987. These theories describe learning styles, distinct types of a learner’s processing information, and identify the best ways to study. The VARK learning styles theories divide learning components into four parts including: visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic styles. What’s more, VARK learning styles help to identify people’s preferred learning styles so that their work achieves the best outcome. Furthermore, VARK helps people develop study skills which benefit learning and teaching experiences. This paper will discuss VARK analysis learning styles, determine my preferred learning strategies, and changes that I need to make in my study habits in order to become a successful student. First, the VARK learning styles theory is based on the idea that different people learn in different ways. The VARK theory uses four main sensory receivers (acronym VARK): visual, aural, read-write, and kinesthetic in order to best serve the needs of a successful student. Neil Fleming said:” VARK learning styles are based on modalities-channels by which human expression can take place and is composed of a combination of perception and memory” (Fleming, 2006). The VARK analyses believe that visual learners learn best...

Midtern Reflect

...English 1101 9 October 2013 Midterm Reflection I have done a variety of different assignments throughout my English 1101 class this semester. The assignments that have had the most influence on me include select chapters from J.M. Bohannon’s I Hate Writing, Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts”, Stephen King’s On Writing, and my practice with rhetorical analysis. Each of these assignments have significantly impacted me and caused me to view my own writing differently. They have helped me grow as a writer as well as come closer to finding my own writer’s “voice”. I have really enjoyed and learned from the chapters that I have read so far in I Hate Writing. My favorite chapter is chapter seven because Bohannon discusses many different ways to introduce a paper. I found her methods very helpful because I have a tendency to struggle when writing my introductions; I simply have no idea where to begin. Bohannon suggestions in chapter seven include telling a story, using a quotation, defining an unfamiliar term, directly stating an argument, writing in the reader, and being creative. After trying each of the options presented by Bohannon in this particular chapter, I found that using a quotation is my favorite technique. I feel it is the easiest way to start a paper off since I have something to base my paper off of. I also feel it is a good way to draw the reader in since a quote is simple, yet sets the theme and mood of a paper. I also appreciated the advice Bohannon gave in...

English 102 Class Reflection

...Throughout the course of my English 102 class, there have been many attributing factors that have not only geared me toward meeting the course objectives but have challenged and strengthened my analytical and critical thinking skills. My portfolio highlights these acquired skills through two outside of class essays, which required two completely different styles of writing. Another key element that has helped to illustrate the writing process for the two essays in my portfolio was the use of reading various types of literature. This included but was not limited to, editorials, newspaper articles, books, and specific disciplines of research in course related fields. These two essays essentially reshaped my ability to write for specific audiences...
