Mysterious Listeriosis Listeriosis is a foodborne disease, also known as food poisoning. Listeria is a bacterium that is mostly found in raw food, water, and animals (Rowland and Frey, 2015). You can get listeriosis by eating/drinking food or water that is contaminated with the bacteria. This disease is important because we need food and water to live, and we also have so many different varieties of how to eat it. Knowing about Listeria is highly beneficial because you never know how your food has been processed. Listeria is dangerous because it can affect anyone and can be in anything(Rowland and Frey, 2015).

Pathophysiology A person can become infected with Listeria by simply eating contaminated food. Such as, raw vegetables, fish, poultry, raw (unpasteurized) milk, fresh meat, processed meat, and some cheeses. Something that makes Listeria unique is that …show more content…
Listeriosis is also deadly because it can infect the CNS which can cause you to get mentally and gain more infections (Frey and Longe, 2015). Also Listeria can cause “significant mortality...the rate for listeria mortality in humans is 20-30%” (Rowland et al, 2015). Listeria is also known to be worse than foodborne disease botulism or salmonella which are already known as fatal. Studies and research report that there are 500 deaths from Listeria each year in the U.S (Rowland et al, 2015).
To prevent from getting a Listeria infection, it mainly relies on the preparation of your food and it is stored after (Frey and Longe, 2015). Also to prevent from getting this would be to avoid raw food and milk, and to make sure your food is clean. Things like running your vegetables under water can prevent you from this.
