Father Daniel Mary currently owns a small monastery of about 15 monks in Clark, Wyoming. His vision is to expand the monastery to support a 30-monk residency in a remote area about 21 miles outside the closest city. The property known as The Irma Lake Ranch is priced at $8.9 million and includes; 17,800-square foot residence, 1,700-square-foot caretaker house, a 2,950-square-foot guesthouse, hunting cabin, a dairy barn and forested land. The monastery has raised $250,000 in donations and currently nets about $6,215 in profits per month from the online coffee business, Mystic Monk Coffee. The business is online-only and is not maintained a consecutive hours due to the monk’s rigorous prayer and ritual activities. The obstacle Father Daniel Mary faces is lifting this business further off the ground and to have continued support for the monastery with a regular income.
Mystic Monk Coffee is currently looking to target the 69 million Catholic’s in the United States. Using the approach of seeking Catholic support for the uprising of a new monastery in the United States is a great starting point. As a religious affiliation, the monks can easily attract extra donations for simple support from devoted Catholics. However, there needs to be a plan to reach these 69 million members. Father Daniel Mary has attempted this using a commission based affiliate program. He should keep his current affiliates, but no longer offer new membership into the program. With the power of Google Search Engine, he should look into creating a Google Ad-words campaign using keywords to generate traffic.
Using keyword search, Father Daniel Mary can effectively place bids on terms that best describe the business. This includes words like “Premium Coffee” “Catholic Charity” and “Organic Coffee” the budget can be set at a custom price so the business can measure the profits directly from Google search results. With the new support from Google search results, it would be advised to create some new aspects to the current online website. Mystic Monk Coffee has an incredible charity potential, even non-Catholic costumers could feel good about supporting. There should be a dedicated section on the landing page that begins to explain the vision goal of owning the Irma Lake Ranch. The millennial generation is very socially conscious about purchases, and willing to pay more money for a product that is healthy and supports a cause.
Mystic Monk can continue to target Catholic members, however to sustain market share, it needs to consider other targets to ensure greater profitability. As mentioned before, the current millennial generation is socially aware and makes purchases based on socially good deeds. There’s also another strategy that can be used effectively that Mystic Monk already practices, the use of organic ingredients. Mystic Monk Coffee uses shade-grown and organic coffee beans that have not been tainted by synthetic fertilizers. This is a strength that should be heavily touted when advertising Mystic Monk Coffee. Along with this premium coffee, the World Fair Trade Organization cooperative has made the cost of beans about $0.12 higher to help support fair living wages to workers. Once again this should be shared openly with Mystic Monk Coffee, this will give customers the feeling of pride from drinking a product from such a caring company.
All of these things should be included on the Mystic Monk website, front and center. Today's society can research and find answers to just about anything. An important part about running a business online is to keep on top of Search-Engine Optimization. As discussed before, investing into keyword advertisement on Google. However, there's another step Mystic Monk Coffee can take to ensure the most traffic possible. Every webpage on the Internet has the ability to include keywords that explain that website or company. By using key words embedded on your website, Google has a better chance of turning you up as a top search result. This would be a long-term goal for Mystic Monk because it takes months of people searching and actually clicking your website before Google ranks you higher in results.
The best way to achieve this is to also design the website to become an information website. A place where people can look up or submit recipes, how-to tutorials, general research on the coffee industry, in-depth information about where and how the organic ingredients are grown. All of this information being available on Mystic Monk Coffee's website can help attract outsiders seeking information, which can lead to sales. Mystic Monk Coffee should also seek to provide the same type of information but about the Catholic faith. This attempts to have those seeking information about faith to also find the product.
Along with improving Mystic Monk Coffee's online presence, Father Daniel Mary should open a local shop. This does not require as much money as one would think. The monastery is already owned the monks and they should take advantage of its atmosphere. Many Catholics and non-Catholics have never been to a monastery before. Mystic Monk Coffee has an atmosphere that Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts cannot offer. Opening a public place for coffee lovers to come in during the day and relax in a quiet monastery is a competitive advantage that shouldn't be ignored. Without making it a tourist attraction, customers can come in, have a brief tour of the monastery and enjoy their premium fresh coffee. There are some things to consider in this decision.
The first would be to consider hiring a full time serving staff. Although currently the monastery saves money by having a monk perform duties, there is great potential in greater revenues if customers can visit during any time of the day for a quick refill of their home stash of products or just a quick afternoon break. The monks should still do the roasting and the new employees should be devoted Catholics, in order to keep the authenticity of the business. The monks received a quote of $35,000 for a larger roaster that could increase the amount of product in a faster amount of time. Even though Mystic Monk has not reached the capacity of the current roaster, they should invest in the larger one. With the website marketing expecting to grow awareness and bring in more business, it would be wise to own a larger roaster because of the anticipation of opening of a public location.
With a larger production process, Mystic Monk Coffee can begin to look for retail shops that would be willing to carry the product on the shelves. This is another attempt to create awareness and it also gives buyers the convenience of purchasing a charitable, religious, healthy, and ethical product while doing normal shopping. Shops like Whole Foods, who are known for only selling organic consumables, may be the perfect first candidates. It is not uncommon for Whole Foods to give a chance to companies who do produce organic and socially aware products. Landing a deal with a retailer gives Mystic Monk Coffee an incredible opportunity to bring brand awareness to the customers face. This could be considered a short-term goal since Mystic Monk already has a production process in place.
The final issue and solution suggested would be to start differentiating the product line to reach a more in-depth target market. Expansion into tea could prove to be an excellent decision for the Mystic Monk Coffee Business. Many people prefer tea over coffee, which means a whole new target market of buyers who also look for all natural products. The Monks would not need any more equipment or knowledge; they can just purchase organic tea and have it labeled for Mystic Monk. Tea is a much simpler item to process, but requires a specific method to ensure proper and fresh taste.
Overall, the steps above will help Mystic Monk Coffee improve brand and company awareness. The mixture of short-term goals; opening a local shop, purchasing a larger roaster, and starting a Google Adwords campaign will directly fuel the businesses growth. With the successful implementation of the short-term goals, the long-term goals of distributing to larger retailers, expanding the product lines into tea, and becoming and information rich source on the Internet will increase the awareness on a national scale. Father Daniel Mary has a strong product, a vision that anyone could support, and the means to increase business to achieve his goal of obtaining his new land as well as create a steady income of the monks at the monastery.
