In the myth Egil's Saga Chapter Five, King Harold wants old man Kveldulf to fight for him because he believes that Kveldulf is powerful and brave. Kveldulf says that he is not fit for war and doesn't want to be apart of it. The messengers then offer for his son Grim to fight for the king instead, but Grim doesn't want to because he has an alliance with his father. The messengers return to King Harold with news. The king doesn't want to have to fight Kveldulf, so Aulvir Hnuf goes and talks to Kveldulf for him. Kveldulf says that he will send his son Thorolf, who will return in the summer, to King Harold if he will give him the special privileges the former king had done for him.

He was going to visit his fighting partner's sister Gyda and her family. The group partied and drank a lot while at the homestead. Egil and his group were planning to leave in the morning, but Gyda and her son Fridgeir insisted on them staying until the weather improved. Egil noticed Fridgeir's sister was always sad and weeping, but the her or Fridgeir wouldn't say what was wrong. Gyda tells Egil that a powerful man named Ljot has come ask to the maiden, but she refused so he wants to battle Fridgeir for the land. Ljot wants to marry the maiden for the family's homestead. Gyda guilts Egil into going with Fridgeir to battle by saying Arinbjorn would if he was here. Egil notices that so he sings a stave about Fridgeir not being fit for war. Ljot hears him and challenges Egil to battle by saying, "Come thou hither, big man, to the holm, and fight me, if thou hast wish that way. That is a far more even match than I should fight with Fridgeir." Egil get ready for battle and defeats Ljot with his power. Egil puts Fridgeir in charge of all the lands Ljot had gathered through the battles he had
