Myth of Santa Claus
Santa Claus is a figure who is said to bring gifts to the good children on 24 December, the night before Christmas. He is depicted as a joyous, white-bearded man, wearing a red and white suit and carrying a bag full of gifts. Santa Claus in the American culture has elves working for him at the North Pole. The elves make and pack the toys that goes to the children. Santa makes a list of the children according to their behaviour and delivers the toys to the well-behaved children and sometimes coal to naughty children on the single night of Christmas Eve. The elves help him doing that. He has eight reindeer which pull his sleigh and can fly. Santa Claus lives at the North Pole.

...many different cultures worldwide. Each time questions are answered understanding is gained. This essay will strive to answer some important, though provoking questions. With each question answered the goal is more knowledge and understanding of the topic and more understanding of thyself. By answering these questions the foundations of mythology can be better understood. Basics of Myth First, let’s consider how the word myth is used popularly. In popular literature, popular television, and throughout human interactions the word myth is uses to address or categorize what is really and what is not real. Throughout society myths are used in stories and legends told. Overtime these stories become part of everyday life. This embedment into everyday lives happens through watching science fiction movies, reading fiction books, and other types of literature whether verbal, text, or movies that are about mystical characters. Some more popular legendary and traditional stories told throughout time include that of St. Nicholas, Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy, and even the stork. These type of myths were created for young children but there are some that are geared towards adults. According to Leonard (2004), "Official myths like the Illiad and Odyssey, The Theogony- or the Bhagavad Gita or the Bible- are inevitably reconstructions from snatches of folklore and legend, artistically put together with an eye for drama and meaning. But real myths are, like one's...

Why Race Matters

...privilege that happens to them, stems from their race. But what about someone's work ethic, attitude, or intelligence. Could these not also explain the reason why a person is successful or a failure? Or is race the only factor that plays a part in the success of someone? With so many opposing arguments it is hard to understand what is fact and what is fiction, when it comes to discussions on race. With that being said, I believe that race does not matter because leading african-americans...

...television. When Charlton Heston received his handcrafted flintlock rifle in 1989, he uttered his famous words, “From my cold dead hands.” President Ronald Reagan and Vice President Dick Cheney also joined the list of those who received facsimile Davy Crockett flintlock rifles from a man dressed in Crockett buckskin attire. This tradition is part of the NRA‟s efforts to represent the gun as a key instrument in the founding of the United States. It secured this ideological representation in part by appropriating the mythology of early American heroes like Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett became emblematic of the gun mythology of early American life. This mythology was synergized by the NRA and popularized through children‟s television to promote a conception of the role of the gun in American cultural history consistent with its political agenda. Through children‟s television, Davy Crockett became an iconic figure for the promotion of the American gun craze. The NRA‟s reliance on the media to support its political agenda is not remarkable considering its strategic goal to speak for a national, majority audience. What...

Miseducation

...to work and sacrifice for their country's salvation. Nationalism in Education In recent years, in various sectors of our society, there have been nationalist stirrings which were crystallized and articulated by the late Claro M. Recto, There were jealous demands for the recognition of Philippine sovereignty on the Bases question. There were appeals for the correction of the iniquitous economic relations between the Philippines and the United States. For a time, Filipino businessmen and industrialists rallied around the banner of the FILIPINO FIRST policy, and various scholars and economists proposed economic emancipation as an intermediate goal for the nation. In the field of art, there have been signs of a new appreciation for our own culture. Indeed, there has been much nationalist activity in many areas of endeavor, but we have yet to hear of a wellorganized campaign on the part of our educational leaders for nationalism in education. Although most of our educators are engaged in the lively debate on techniques and tools for the improved instructions, not one major educational leader has come out for a truly nationalist education. Of course some pedagogical experts have written on some aspects of nationalism in education. However, no comprehensive educational programme has been advanced as a corollary to the programmes for political and economic emancipation. This is a tragic situation because the nationalist movement is...
