The short story is about a young, newlywed couple who move into a western neighbourhood but they feel like foreigners in their own country. The couple seem to be uncomfortable at first but as the story progresses and the newlywed are surprised with a pregnancy simple actions and advice offering shows the coming together of the multicultural society. The characters are presented in certain ways to show their stereotypical ethnic background. For example the Macedonian family shouted, ranted, screamed. This shows the Macedonians as having unsociable behaviour. The old polish man spent most of his day hammering nails into wood only to pull them out again. This shows a strange vibe coming from another neighbour in their community. With the use of characterisation it helps reinforce the idea that they are uncomfortable in the neighbourhood and it makes the reader feel empathy towards the newlyweds. Symptoms of PTSD may appear immediately or it may appear years later. Even though they may not be present for the traumatic event, family members and significant others such as spouses can be affected indirectly and can also develop certain behaviors. PTSD is commonly characterized by flashbacks and recurrent dreams; sudden irritability and outbursts toward another person without any obvious or known reasons; and restlessness or difficulty sleeping and concentrating. (Neeb, page 169) Traumatic experiences such as witnessing the death of a loved one, being sexually abused or assaulted, being exposed to a war, and being involved in a devastating accident can all cause PTSD. The likelihood of a person developing PTSD is based on the intensity of the trauma. According to the National Institute of Health, once PTSD has developed, women are more prone to experience chronic symptoms of this disorder compared to men. Whistleblowers are people who decide to report unethical or illegal activities, usually activities under the control of their employers. According to Halbert and Ingulli, “What unites all whistleblowing is the urge to bring a disturbing situation to light, the urge to bring about some corrective change” (Halbert & Ingulli, 2012, p. 46). This brings us to the concept highlighted in Chapter 2, loyalty to the company, and their views on employment-at-will and their rules for and against whistleblowing.
