Najmah and her brother Nur want to return to Golestan since her uncle or the Taliban were going to take the land. Bibi Nusrat encourages them to stay away from that land because it's dangerous for them to go there and tells them to go to University Town. Bibi Nusrat also tells Najmah to go to New York with her, but Najmah fakes that she is sleeping because she doesn't want to go with her. Nur and Najmah feel like they have no choice, but to go back to the farm that has been there for generations in their family. Najmah and Nur decided not to go back to Golestan where their ancestors' have lived for many years. "'We have no choice but to return to Golestan,' says Nur quietly. Nur and I don't know what to do or say...'We can't stay here,' says Bibi Nusrat drawing a deep breathe"(256). Nusrat keeps on telling them that got back to the farm is not something they should do because they could be in danger and that they should go to University Town where they will be much safer. "I pretend I'm sleeping because I don't want to talk to her. I don't want to hear her say again how dangerous it is for Nur and me to travel to Kunduz. I don't want to have to tell her again that I cannot go with her to New York"(262). Najmah is not ready to leave the country and doesn't want to make her future in New York. "'Yes we know about the danger. But we feel we have no choice"'(264). Najmah and Nur have no choice, but to do what her father wished for and would of wanted them to do. "And how can a girl named Star and a boy named Light not go back to their land in the shadow of a mountain named to honor their ancestors' hearts? For there is great value to lives lived in a village called Golestan, which means 'beautiful garden'(270).
