On the Upfront website, the article Naps at School, author unknown, describes how high schools are starting to allow students to take a nap during class when they get sleepy. Many high schools are starting the trend of sleep pods for students that are exceptionally tired. At Las Cruces High School in New Mexico, school officials installed nap pods for teens last spring, and so far they have been a big hit. Nap pods are cozy chairs with adjustable canopies for privacy; they allow for 20 minutes of sleep time for students before they return to class. Las Cruses High School says that nap pods can help raise awareness for that lack of sleep that can harm teens' ability to stay focused at school. Additionally, more schools around the state are

Why We Should Have Longer School Days

...Longer School Days: A Multi-Beneficial Idea When people think of America, some think of our “greatness”, or how America is one of the “superpower” nations. They may think of our huge military strength, or the vast amount of unique cities we have scattered around this widespread country. But what do people think about our education system? Unfortunately, many individuals are unaware of the decline that our education system has suffered. For instance, Geoffrey Canada, president of the Harlem children’s zone, an organization whose goal is to increase graduation among students, says that many schools in the area don’t even have enough time to cover the entire curriculum during the day. This is just one of the many problems with America’s education system that needs to be fixed. It is especially concerning for the future generation, as they will have to compete with a global economy in where other countries such as Japan are advancing much more than America is in terms of education and innovation. Therefore, because America’s education system is in a rut from things like low test scores to high dropout rates, adding longer school days will be both beneficial to not only the system, but also to the parents, students and teachers. Extending the school day length will give low income students more academic opportunities while keeping them out of trouble, allow ESL (English as a second language) students to adjust comfortably to the school environment, give all students regardless of...

Getting Up Early In The Morning

...that, Harvard Medical School Professor Charles A. Czeisler states that “many educators think that adolescents learn best in the morning and the reason why some adolescents are weary and irritable is that they stay up too late, or they are too lazy to wake up early in the morning.” (Czeisler, 52) The conventional belief these educators maintain is that if adolescents can cultivate the habit of going to sleep earlier, it would help them learn better in school and improve their performance in class. As a result, although there is no research calculating the exact average start time of middle school in China and the start time vary from province to province, many of the middle schools starts at around 07:20 according to numerous studies reporting timetables which educators in certain local middle schools...

The amount of sleep a person is required to get varies. Some people can function even if they sleep below the recommended amount of sleep; however this is only a rare case and is only applicable to a handful of people. The recommended amount of sleep depends on the age group of each person, with toddlers and children needing 9 hours, teens and young adults alike need 7 to 9 hours. There are many possible causes as to why people lack sleep. It could either be external or internal causes. Internal problems in your body may cause you to lack sleep, such as illnesses, sleep disorders, and taking certain medications. External causes are the things that may influence you to lack sleep, like personal choice, work, poor sleeping hygiene, disturbances in your sleeping environment...

Stress in the Workplace

...majority of peoples’ time and puts food on the table. That one thing is work. Work is a large part of why people in the United States and all across the world want to pull out their hair and call it quits. An enormous aspect of why work might be stressful is caused by the actual work environment. You can tell the difference between stress levels when walking into a newspaper HQ and walking into a jewelry store. An article called “Toward Human Sustainability: How to Enable More Thriving at Work” talks about how to create a less stressful work environment. The article gives managers and companies detailed instructions on how to lower stress and what its positive outputs in the workspace are. An issue that works against lowering stress in the workplace is the fact that Americans just are not taking days off from work anymore. A website by the name of “Project: Time Off” creates blog posts and detailed analyses on what exactly happens when Americans do not take time off. One of these analyses include “Overwhelmed America: Why Don’t We Use Our Earned Leave?” This analysis includes abundant data and explanations on how the relationship between worker and company are when relating to days off. Creating a leisurely and stress-free work environment should be the end goal of all future managers. Many college students are studying to become managers or to be higher in the business hierarchy. This means that they will have the power to implement some of these ideas into their own work environment...

...plan. This chapter discusses methods for establishing such systems. In doing so, we echo Worth’s (2012) concern that “nonprofit managers must be committed to performance measurement but should not become overly focused on it to the detriment of delivering their mission’s programs” (p. 157). Performance measurement Process Before engaging in performance measurement, it is vital to understand the level and scope of the process. Measurement can be conducted for effectiveness or performance at the program/project or organizational level. Effectiveness relates to achieving the mission, while performance is a broader concept that considers financial results and other variables related to the overall organization. Once the scope and level of analysis are determined, several questions should be answered about the evaluation process: 1. WHAT is to be evaluated—or assessed for effectiveness? 2. HOW should it be assessed? 129 130 • INTRODUCTION TO NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT 3. WHO is responsible for conducting the assessment? 4. TO WHOM should the results be reported? Child Care Center Market Research

...Market Research Study for Pre-School venture in Lower Manhattan Introduction The price of private education in Manhattan is exponentially increasing. Over the past 10 years, the median price of first grade in the city has gone up 48%, adjusted for inflation, compared with a 35% increase nationally (NYTimes.com, 1/29/2012). Clearly there is a supply and demand crisis, with more students than seats available. Therefore, our team decided to research the possibility of launching a new pre-school in lower Manhattan. We believe there is a desirable opportunity to open a customized pre-school that serves both our own interests and parents’ current unmet needs. To give some color, below are three recent excerpts concerning the topic: “I think the nursery school admissions process is a war zone. It’s parent against parent, it’s toddler versus toddler… Parents are crazy competitive…It’s about getting in, fitting in, it’s about belonging. That’s why people sweat it.” (Parent from “Nursery University” documentary, 2007) “In an entrepreneurial city where even volatile commodities like real estate eventually find their equilibrium, the desire for private school seats has outpaced supply for many years, in some cases by an order of magnitude. “ (nytimes.com, 2010). “When the public school Pre-K selections were announced, we were denied acceptance to ALL 10 schools…out of 12 friends with kids hoping to enter Pre-K in the Fall of 2011, not ONE of them got in. You see, simply...

Effects of Insomnia

...Abstract Insomnia is generally defined as the inability to sleep adequately a few times a weak and doesn’t mean the inability to sleep at all. Insomnia can be chronic or on going.Certain causes of insomnia can be categorized into three major categories which include lifestyle, health and environment. Experiments were carried out to see how insomnia affects quality of life and the conclusion reached was that people suffering from insomnia report greater quality of life impairment in contrast to people without insomnia. Sleep disturbance can exacerbate the condition, disrupt treatment, cause further complications and add to the social disability associated with chronic illness. Insomnia can result in mental illness and can have a huge impact when it comes to efficiency of a subject. Personally traits can be a major differentiating point when it comes to comparison between subjects with and without insomnia however personality differences between insomniacs and controls might rather be state-dependent instead of trait-dependent. Treatment of insomnia can be by two major ways namely pharmacotherapy and nonpharmacologic interventions. Herbal treatment as per 82% of Canadians are also very effective when it comes to treating insomnia. Rest and little exertion can also play a vital role when it comes to curing insomnia. Effects Of Insomnia On Quality of Life Insomnia is derived from the Latin word which means “no sleep”. A recent report estimates that 60 to 70 million American...

...Vol. 1 January 2012 IAMURE International Journal of Lesbian, Gays, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Morphological Analysis of Gay’s Spoken Discourse ARIEL B. LUNZAGA abl.slsu.to@gmail.com HERMABETH O. BENDULO VIOLETA B. FELISILDA SOUTHERN LEYTE STATE UNIVERSITY Philippines Abstract The language of gays known as gayspeak has now earned respect from the community and observably been infused in the mainstream language of the society. Language is evolving and with its changing nature, existing language needs to be documented for posterity reasons. Gayspeak is not an exemption. It has to be analyzed especially its morphology. This study focused on the morphological analysis of the language of gays who were studying at SLSUTomas Oppus in SY 2009-2010. Specifically, it identified the common vocabulary of local gays and the corresponding meanings through a self-administered questionnaire and an informal conversation. Based from the information provided by 20 purposively selected college gays, it was learned that gayspeak is simply an adaptation of the mainstream language like English, Filipino, and Cebuano. For purposes of shielding from the chasms of the heterosexuals, gays construct their language through simple reversal, syllabic reversal, simple reversal with affixation, clipping with affixation, straight words with affixation, and connotation through images. It was concluded that the spoken discourse of college gays in the campus violates the rules of English grammar yet used...

Film Analysis of 3 Idiots and Societal Impacts on Individualism

...Azim Ali Ali 1 Film Analysis of 3 Idiots and Societal Impacts on Individualism There is a classical Hindu scripture and story part of the Mahabharata called the Bhagavad Gita. In this story, one can tell the importance of sacrifice and dharma in Indian society. A legendary archer, Arjuna, has a major dilemma in the story in which he was to go to battle and fight, as he was a Kshatriya (warrior caste), or to not fight because he was going into battle to fight his uncles and aunts. Arjuna asked his chariot driver, an incarnation of Krishna, what he should do, and the driver told Arjuna to obey his dharma and fight just as his duty entailed him to and fight his loved ones. The dilemma that Arjuna experiences in the Bhagavad Gita is the same as the one many of the characters in 3 Idiots face. 3 Idiots is the perfect amalgamation of how dharma and izit affect one’s life in South Asia. Throughout the film, there were stories of characters facing the problem of being accepted in society as something other than what their parents wished them to be or do. 3 Idiots is a great movie that pushes the idea that duty and izit is not limited to family pressures or societal pressures, but also it pushes the idea that duty and izit can come from within and from individualism. The movie is a story of how three friends faced the major issues and problems with the education system in India and around the world. Three main characters: Rancho, Raju, and Farhan all coming from different...
