Narrative Essay On My First Rugby

Growing up I was interested in team sports. I was always the biggest girl on my team, and I didn’t really fit in with all of the other girls. They were all smaller than me and I felt out of place. I played soccer and basketball, and continued until seventh grade when I suffered a knee injury and had to put a pause on the sport I loved at the time. My rehab went well, and I tried out for the AAU travel basketball team as soon as I was cleared Heartbreak quickly followed when the coach called my parents and told them that I didn’t make the team.
After going through a Winter with nothing to do, my dad took me to my first rugby game. He had learned about the sport through his chiropractor, and thought that it would be a good thing for me to go out and watch a game. I …show more content…
I walked into the indoor sports complex where the first practice was, shaking with nerves. I sat in the corner by myself, waiting for the practice to start and to get it over with. A very bubbly girl came up to me and introduced herself. She was so happy and excited that I was new and I was playing the sport that SHE loved. That’s when I started to realized that rugby wasn’t like other sports. I went through with the practice and had a blast with all of the girls. I play rugby for the team work and sportsmanship. I fell in love with a sport that doesn’t consist of one body type like soccer or basketball. You can look at a rugby team and you see girls that are tall, short, thin, stout, muscular and lean, all on one team. And each team is a family. Everybody is there for everybody else. Going into this sport, you don’t just gain teammates, you gain sisters or brothers. You make friendships that will last forever, not only on your team. I fell in love with the culture behind the sport. The only sport that you sit down with the team you were just trying to beat, and eat with them. You socialize with teams across the country. Rugby has impacted my life drastically, and it’s also taught me some

Students’ Construction of the Body in Physical Education

...research and the time they dedicated to all of the interviews and member checks. I also thank the principals who gave me permission to conduct this study. I especially acknowledge and thank physical education teachers Celeste Alfred, for welcoming me to her school, and Vickie Braud for her great help in making contacts necessary to complete my data collection. Both Vickie and Celeste were wonderful throughout my research process, helping me to observe classes and arrange student interviews at the schools. I greatly appreciate all the suggestions, insights and comments of my committee members. Thank you to all of them: Dr. Kuttruff, my external committee member, for her interest in following the steps of my dissertation; Dr. Magill, for bringing a very challenging and valuable perspective to my research; Dr. Lee, for her deep knowledge and expertise in the field of physical education; and Dr. Harrison, for his mentoring and expertise on issues of race and physical activity. Dr. Harrison, I have greatly appreciated, valued, and enjoyed all of our conversations (and in four years there were many) and sharing experiences on this topic. I want to thank my minor professor, Dr. MunroHendry, for guiding me to understand the complex world of the “Curriculum Theory Project,”...

A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man

...Published in serial form in 1914–1915, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Mandraws on many details from Joyce's early life. The novel's protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, is in many ways Joyce's fictional double—Joyce had even published stories under the pseudonym "Stephen Daedalus" before writing the novel. Like Joyce himself, Stephen is the son of an impoverished father and a highly devout Catholic mother. Also like Joyce, he attends Clongowes Wood, Belvedere, and University Colleges, struggling with questions of faith and nationality before leaving Ireland to make his own way as an artist. Many of the scenes in the novel are fictional, but some of its most powerful moments are autobiographical: both the Christmas dinner scene and Stephen's first sexual experience with the Dublin prostitute closely resemble actual events in Joyce's life. In addition to drawing heavily on Joyce's personal life, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man also makes a number of...
