Douglass uses this book to enlighten the American people about the horrors and the sheer inhumanity of slavery. In this book, written before the Civil War, he accurately represents what happened to slaves to those who weren’t accustomed to the horrors of slavery, the Northerners. Douglass accomplishes this goal by using antithetical ideas, by using metaphor and by using diction that was only expected of the upper class.
