United States is a very diverse country with a various population containing different religions, cultures and values. Each single culture has its own traditions, celebrations and festivities. Last night I went to a Hindu temple to observe ‘Narvatri’ festival. Navratri, is a festival of love and dance. The actual word Narvatri can be interpreted as nine nights. The festival is going on for nine nights during September or October established by the old Hindu calendar. There are various folktales attached to the conception of Narvatri and all of the Indian festivals are related to Goddess Shakti and her various forms. She said to another girl that the “ Furthermost problematic of all is the eight day when it appears unbearable to go on starving any longer!” and she mentioned that she wants to be in a place where everybody else can gobble on pizza and drink soda. I understood that these girls have been coming to the temple for eight nights already, celebrating Narvatri and trying to keep their traditions and values, however they also felt tired and malnourished, as they were finishing up the eight day. Even though the temple did not possess a lot of food in their kitchen, we were able to prepare meals that included fruits, fish and “naan”. “ Naan” which translates to bread was one of the most simple, yet delicious breads I have ever tasted.
