The 21st century world is one of great complexity. We are inundated with information nearly constantly through social networks, blogs, radios, advertisements, televisions--the list goes on. Perhaps this flood of information obscures us from the real problems we are facing as a society--or at least makes us numb to them. For example: On April 15, 2013, three people were killed and hundreds injured from bombings that took place during the Boston Marathon--this news made front-page-breaking-news around the world (Levs.) It was indeed a tragedy. That same day, April 15, 2013, more than 42 people were killed and over 250 people were injured in Iraq ahead of political elections (Tawfeeq.) Did the world report this? Yes. Were people talking about this tragedy at work on April 16? Unlikely. The point in this is that there is so much happening in the world that we lose sight of so much because we simply do not have the time to sift through and analyze all of the information provided to us daily. We get caught up in complexities of politics, he-said-she-said arguments, and terribly unimportant information that we neglect what is right in front of us: Hunger, poverty, and disease. The United States government is indeed a complex organization with a complex budget. Anyone can make an argument in regard to where or where not allocations of money should be going within the government--many of these arguments can be quite valid and even sound. However- when 47 million Americans are in poverty, 49 million Americans are hungry, and Americans continue to suffer from disease, why should $17 Billion be spent yearly on a program that does nothing to eradicate the simple suffering that happens daily on America’s soil while it proves to be more concerned with the soil of other planets? Yes, NASA is what I speak of; And while I do commend the achievements of NASA since its

Funding Nasa

...Abstract This essay touches on the issue of NASA funding. It tries to persuade NASA as well as the government to increase funding for NASA’s manned space missions. It uses substantial evidence from many sources to help make its argument valid as well as persuasive. Within the essay there is a brief introduction stating the thesis for the topic followed by a background section. This section helps to better explore the topic at hand. The main body of the argument revolves around the reasons with evidence for the thesis statement with refutation. Finally, the conclusion draws everything together by restating the thesis with reasons, and helping to better answer the question of whether funding should be increased for the space program. Introduction “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!” These words of Neil Armstrong as he took his first steps onto the moon signified one of the greatest achievements of the modern world, and the American space program. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration have been responsible for many stupendous achievements not only for the U.S., but for humans abroad. As of February 2006, their mission statement has been to, “pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research.” What is the ultimate goal of NASA’s work? Do all of the discoveries we make benefit the general population? Will exploring the universe and searching for life on other planets help us gain the big picture of where we...

Summary: The Importance Of Funding NASA

...The Importance of Funding NASA When you look out into the stars and think of how vast the universe truly is it makes you feel small, so very small and insignificant that it creates an empty feeling that can be difficult to forget. We often at times get lost in our imagination of the absolutely endless possibilities that we simply will never be able to discover or even visualize because of the enormity of space itself. One of the utmost important events for the human species were the space race and the creation of NASA on October 1, 1958 because of the now known potential we hold as human beings and the things we have accomplished that at one point were never thought possible. The first human put on the moon was made possible by NASA in...

National Aeronautics And Space Administration: NASA Funding

...James Doyle Dr. John Lavelle Com 1101 E4 9/12/13 NASA Funding The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is a truly remarkable agency. The breakthroughs the scientists and engineers who work here have made life much better, not only for themselves, but for the average person. The advances in science and technology may have originally been to make spaceflight safer, or to learn about space, but these advances can be applied in different ways than first thought, and NASA doesn’t get the amount of funding they should. With the intent of making it safer to travel to space, these people can apply their ideas and methods, in ways that help everyone. Because of these truths, it is truly unbelievable to know how little NASA’s funding is....

Funding Nasa

...NASA is the main organization for space exploration in the United States, and is apart of the governments funding. NASA is a critical part of the worlds future in many different ways. Lots of people believe their tax money is going to a waste since NASA is funded by the US government. One thing people might not realize is how beneficial the NASA program is. Many life saving and convenient inventions have been made by NASA. These inventions are referred to as spinoffs, and NASA has documented more than 1,500 spinoff success stories. For example the WARP 10, which is a hand-held, high-intensity, LED unit developed by Quantum Devices Inc. The WARP 10 is intended for the temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, arthritis, stiffness, and muscle spasms, and also promotes muscle relaxation and increases local blood circulation. Another example would be infrared ear thermometers which you see all the time going to the doctor’s office. People may talk about the need to cut back funding because our budget deficit. But, you fail to realize that we can cut many other things like the billions of dollars we spend on foreign aid rather than one of the proudest and most beneficial programs in the US. The President's 2012 Budget provides 18.7 billion dollars to NASA which is only about 0.5 percent of the United States Federal Budget.Cutting NASA’s funding wouldn't magically climb us out of debt. If anything the money gained from cutting NASA would be spent immediately on other stuff...

Museums and Art Galleries

...One very complex issue in today’s world is the funding of museums and art galleries. While there is an argument that they should be free to the general public and funded by governments, I also believe that there is also a case for saying that they should charge an entrance fee like other attractions. Those who argue that museums should be free typically make one of two arguments. The first argument is that institutions like museums are a public service and therefore there should be free access to the man in the street. If for example there was a charge only the wealthy could afford to enjoy works of art. The second, and related, argument is that if they did levy a charge fewer people would go to museums. This would be serious as they are educational institutions and standards would fall. In contrast, there is only one major argument on the other side of the debate. This is that both museums and art galleries need to charge an entrance fee if they are to survive in the modern world. Governments do not have sufficient funds to subsidize all such institutions and there are other priorities for public money. Therefore these galleries and museums need to charge their customers not only to survive but to update their exhibitions and make new purchases. By way of illustration, the Tate Modern in London could not have been founded without revenue from admissions. My personal position is that there is no clear answer to this question as there are such strong arguments on both sides...

Tourism

...Tourism BETTER FUNDING FOR STATE TOURISM ORGANIZATIONS An almost universal problem for state tourism organizations is the scarcity of funding. Budgets are tight with so many social and other problems plaguing the states. Also, there is some reluctance to fund the tourism promotion organization by those who feel mistakenly that it is mainly the tourist businesses that profit from the industry rather than the population in general. Competition for state funds by other agencies is intense and, as a rule, the tourism people do not as good as lobbying as other interest groups. In order to do something at this regard, the Governor appointed a 40-member tourism task force to investigate ways in which tourism promotion could be accomplished in a more adequate manner. The task force has come up with the following plan: they recommend that the state legislature establish a “tourism marketing order” to raise funds from assessments the industry makes upon itself about the way in which each business should contribute to funding. Businesses that would be assessed include transportation companies, travel agencies, cruise lines, rental car companies, accommodations, attractions, recreation facilities, restaurants, retail outlets, factory outlets, and bars/drinking places. All funds raised would be used for state-wide tourism promotion. In order to implement this plan, the state legislature must first authorize a statewide referendum that would be conducted by the industry among...

Memo and Business Letter for Csu Funding

...Memo and Business Letter Student’s Name: Institution: Memo TO: CSU Funding campaign team members FROM: Yuqing and William DATE: February 5, 2014 SUBJECT: Funding for CSU This memo is a reminder of the meeting we have today. The agenda of the meeting is to talk about what we discussed and to get opinions on the matter. As the campaign group for the CSU funding, it is proper that we use all means and to gather all that is in our disposal for the task. We discussed on how we can acquire funding, and we agreed that we should not limit our campaign to only seeking finances. The essence of this program is to help increase CSU’s finances so that it can services its activities. This can be achieved through the provision finances and by enforcing measures to cut down costs. CSU has tried such measures, in the past, to cut down on its spending. It has done so by increasing its technology use to replace costly manual systems and by sharing services between departments and campuses. In our discussion, we suggested on the same idea that campaigning for funding does not exclusively mean seeking funds. We, therefore, discussed that if we can get people to volunteer, tutor or pursue internship programs, it would be a good measure of cutting down costs. Salary expenses are a significant part of the overall expenses and reducing these costs saves a lot of money for CSU. We also proposed that the target audience, for this plan of the campaign, is the graduates. Students do not have...

Program Planning

...Program Planning and Grant Proposals By: Tiffany Davis University Of Phoenix This paper was prepared for Terra Harris The relationship between program planning and grant proposals is one that has many similarities but it is also very different and they should be treated as such. A grant proposal addresses goals within the organizations ability to provide relevant services. Grant proposals could be contract submitted to perform an activity for example better training and research. Program planning is the first step in planning to redevelop a particular program that wishes to be funded by the grant for a government purpose. The grant proposal has a description of what the organization is planning on doing and the deliverables, budget and other important information. Program planning is a way of executing the program and planning on how to get the funds needed to deliver the training or extra things for the organization to make it better for not only the company but for their employees as well. When young adults/adults want to go to school they have to plan what program / career they would like to learn about and get a degree in. Then they have to plan on the budget needed to get to go to school. The last step is to fill out for a grant through the government to get the funds needed to go to school to achieve our goals in getting a better career after school. It is very important to know the difference between program planning and grant proposal. This is important...

Sport Management

...Case Study What is the core role of lifesaving clubs and agencies? Its mission statement states in part that its role is ‘to lead, support, collaborate, with national and international organisations engaged in drowning prevention, water safety, water rescue, lifesaving, lifeguarding, and lifesaving sport’ (www.ilsf.org). What are their likely source of income, and why? Lifesaving clubs and agencies rely heavily on the supply of public funding by the government. The costs associated with the development of sport such as building or improvement of facilities is usually funded by the government. The government/State heavily funds lifesaving clubs and agencies. It is because the State believes that it can improve the well being of society by its various interventions. (Hoye, Russel. 2006, p. 20). This type of intervention falls under the neo-liberalism ideology. It was found that ‘neo-liberals believe government should not engage directly in most economic activity, but rather provide only base level infrastructure, legislative guidelines within which private business can thrive’ (Hoye, Russel. 2006, p. 27). How feasible would it to get the people being rescued to actually fund the operations of lifesaving clubs and agencies? It will not be feasible for the people being rescued to fund the operations because the cost of running the lifesaving clubs and agencies are huge. The amount of money channelled to the lifesaving clubs and agencies by the State to the clubs...

Hsm/270

... HSM/270 Grants play a very big and important role in the human services field. Grants are needed to provide human service funding for programs that can help people in their time of need. Without grants funding these programs would fail. Funding helps to provide the required funding to pay for some human service programs and the workers needed to run these programs. While donations and fees are crucial to human service nonprofits, many organizations rely heavily on revenues from government contracts and grants to expand their reach. Grants are more vital to some programs more than others in the human services field. There are grants for programs that help out a community that has been hit with a disaster, and the grants that help fund the needs of programs like that are very vital in order to build back communities and help those in need in those hard times. Other programs that grants are vital to include programs such as programs for abused children, homeless families, and programs that feed the hungry. There are several programs that need funding provided by grants in order to help people in time of need, but some are need grants to run more than others in order to provide the care that people may need. In all, grants play a very important role in helping people who rely on human service programs who's main funding is from the grants that they...

Letter

...January 16, 2009 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing you on behalf of our Headstart Program. As you may not be aware, our program is primarily a federally funded organization. We get the majority of our funding from the Department of Health and Human Services in the form of a grant. With this grant we are able to provide services in fourteen migrant and seasonal head start centers. As a grant requirement we must meet a twenty percent matching requirement (In-kind), which is extremely tough to meet in the rural areas that we operate. We are now nearing the end of our 2008-2009 season and are asking for donations in order to reach our required match. A donation can be in the form of many things such as, cash, office supplies, curriculum approved education supplies, supplies to maintain our centers, hygiene supplies, etc. If you would like to donate to our program please contact Susie Smith at (208) 453-1111. She will be able to supply you with a receipt and can provide you with any other information you may need. If our program is unable to meet the required amount of In-kind, it could have a huge impact on our children, families and communities. Our funding would be cut back and therefore result in a reduction in services to our families. In our rural communities it is extremely important that we all stick together. It would be very detrimental if we were unable to provide services to so many families that desperately need it. Any help you can provide...

Chap. 11

...Chapter 11 Chapter 11 Issues of Reporting, Disclosure and Financial Analysis Questions for Review and Discussion 1. The key criterion is financial accountability — the primary government either appoints a voting majority of the unit’s governing body or a majority of the unit’s governing body is composed of primary government officials and • the primary government is able to impose its will upon the potential component unit or • there is the potential for the organization to provide specific financial benefits to, or impose specific financial burdens on, the primary government. 2. Discrete presentation is when one or more component units are reported in separate columns, in addition to those pertaining to the primary government. Blending is when the component units’ transactions and balances are reported as if they were part of the primary government — that is, the component units’ funds are accounted for just as they were funds of the primary government. Blending is required when the primary government and the component units are controlled by governing boards having the same members or the component unit provides services solely to the primary government. If those conditions are not satisfied then discrete presentation is required. 3. Discrete presentation, as it must be applied in government-wide statements, allows for the aggregation of any number of different component units, irrespective of type and basis of accounting. Therefore, it...
