The role of revolution in enhancing freedom for African-American community cannot be disregarded. In this same way, the role of significant revolutionaries to the attainment of freedom is equally important. One of the most significant characters was Nat Turner who life and activities are clearly reconstructed in Stephen Oates’ the Fires of Jubilee. Ideally, it is reasonable to assume that prior to many of the events leading to the civil war, the white and black children were living peacefully with each other. But of more importance however, is the role that religion played in enhancing the events as explained in the Fires of Jubilee. Ideally, the author intends to narrate the situation of slavery with regard Nat Turner’s life and it is not doubt that trough accuracy and empathy, the author has effectively achieved his purpose. In fact, the book shed light into the important role of religion in African’s as it show that religion not only helped in enhancing the rebellion, but it also helped to empower the abolitionists. According to Jonathan Steplyk’s review, the book successfully narrates Nat Turner’s life by using easily accessible sources in such a way to serve as a source for American historians (Steplyk, 2017). In fact, it is perfect for the class’s agenda as it hopes to explore the history of slavery and the underlying rebellion.
