Natalie Zemon Davis addresses the religious and secular violence that occurred during the Reformation between the Catholics and Protestants. Both the Catholics and Protestants felt that it was their obligation to utilize violence for purification purposes in order to create a society that would be unified by one faith. Riots, in every sense of the word, were used as a way to defend the truth and beliefs of the religion and to eliminate those who were not committed or “polluted”society. Riots for both the Catholics and the Protestants could be viewed to us as outrageous but to them, it had a connection in time and was seen as instrumental in maintaining their beliefs.
