...Hi, I am Sophia Johnson and I am glad that I got the opportunity to apply to be in the National Junior Honor Society program. I have a big heart for helping others and I hope I can be in this program to help even more in my next year as an eighth grader. I am going to share with you a few traits of mine that makes me special. One of the reasons why I would be a good member in this group, is because I’m a very happy and positive person. In every situation I try to look at the positives versus the negatives. This is an important trait in myself because in the world we live in there’s so much negativity, that the world needs to be filled with much more positivity. For example, whenever anyone of my family or friends is having a rough day, I like to step in and tell them to look on the bright side. As well as being a positive person, I am also a very kind person. You...

Homeschooling

...Does Home Schooling Prepare A Child For College? The Advantages of Home Schooling Fredalene B. Vigil National American University Author Note English Composition II Professor Lorrinda Kahn November 23, 2014 Abstract Some people have misconceptions about the benefits of homeschooling. Some believe that home schooling does not prepare a child socially, emotionally or academically for college. They believe that home schooling has a negative effect on their social well-being for their future. Studies show that children who are home schooled have great social skills due to the fact that they interact with a wider group of people rather than the same children in a classroom on a daily basis. Homeschoolers are able to associate with groups of children who have similar interests and values. Some also believe that the quality of education does not prepare a child academically to be successful in college. Test scores on the college admission exams such as the SAT and ACT have shown that homeschoolers consistently perform above the national level. Home schooled children display qualities such as the ability to work independently and exhibit strong leadership skills. Does Home Schooling Prepare Children For College? The Advantages of Home Schooling There are several misconceptions and myths about home schooled children...

...my family moved to the US before I entered high school, I have always kept my eyes turned north, especially in recent years as I began to read journal articles about research conducted on John Evans Glacier, located about 80° N latitude. Graduating next semester with a B.S. in computer science and engineering and a minor in geographic information systems, I am interested in attending the University of Alberta for graduate study. Geographic information systems (GIS) is a field especially suited to investigating spatial patterns, modeling diverse scenarios, and overlaying spatial data. This semester, in my advanced GIS course, Spatial Data Structures and Algorithms, I am part of a team developing a temporal database and program for tracing historical trading data. My computer science skills have also been put to use in two summer internship projects, where I acquired proficiency with using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) technology, now favored by NASA in its current 10-year study of Greenland and changes in the ice cap extent. Through my coursework and project experience, I have also accrued skills in using Arc/Info, ArcView, Microstation, and RDBMS software packages, and I am equally comfortable programming in Visual Basic, C++, and Java. For my graduate research project, I would like to investigate methods for improving current GIS data models to better incorporate time as a variable in studying climate change. Sociology

...legally defined minority populations in the United States, racial and ethnic identity are manifested in very conscious ways. This manifestation is triggered most often by two conflicting social and cultural influences. First, deep conscious immersion into cultural traditions and values through religious, familial, neighborhood, and educational communities instills a positive sense of ethnic identity and confidence. Second, and in contrast, individuals often must filter ethnic identity through negative treatment and media messages received from others because of their race and ethnicity. These messages make it clear that people with minority status have a different ethnic make-up and one that is less than desirable within mainstream society. Others, especially white Americans, manifest ethnic and racial identity in mostly unconscious ways through their behaviors, values, beliefs, and assumptions. For them, ethnicity is usually invisible and unconscious because societal norms have been constructed around their racial, ethnic, and cultural frameworks, values, and priorities and then referred to as “standard American culture” rather than as “ethnic identity.” This unconscious ethnic identity manifests itself in daily behaviors, attitudes, and ways of doing things. Unlike many minority cultures, there is little conscious instilling of specific ethnic identity through white communities, nor is differential ethnic treatment often identified in the media of white cultures. As ...
