...On April 29th, I attended the Phi Alpha Theta regional history conference in Oneonta New York. Phi Alpha Theta is the national honor society for history. Each year it holds a variety of regional history conferences around the country for its members. As a member of Phi Alpha Theta, this conference had been the third PAT regional conference I had attended. Structurally, this conference was a bit different from the previous PAT conferences I had been to. Usually, PAT members would submit abstracts of their papers on a certain day before the conference, see if they were accepted, then sometime before the conference submit their papers to the person who was chairing your section. Though with this conference, people who were not members of Phi...

...When I think about greek life I truly think about sisterhood. When I joined the Greek system as a transfer Junior from Baton Rouge, LA, I didn’t realize the kinds of connections and relationships it would open up for me. My name is Taylor Padgett and I am a Delta member of the Delta Sigma Chapter at the University of Mississippi. Starting this year off, joining a sorority was not even on my list of life accomplishments and never even crossed my mind especially at a school known for their prestigious greek life. Only knowing two people upon transferring here I was told that it would be a good idea to join and make friends, but in my mind I didn’t want to “pay for my friends”. A few months into the fall semester I was walking through the grove here on Campus when I saw thousands of girls all wearing blue and pink C.A.R.E walk shirts. Totally disregarded what was going on until I approached a short dark headed girl, Logan Sparks, under a big white tent to ask what was going on ,where she informed me about this new sorority called Alpha Delta Pi that was coming back to campus. I was so overwhelmed by everything that was going on around me I wasn’t able to take it all in. It wasn’t until a day or two later when I was walking to subway on the third floor of our student union when I was approached by another one of our awesome leadership consultants Jessica Johnson. In a calmer area, I was able to really take in what greek life actually was and what Alpha Delta Pi could do for me. It...

...grand philanthropic tradition that can be described as a song and dance performance. This year, proceeds raised from the event will go toward the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. The Wounded Warrior Project has helped thousands of family and service members with medical, housing, along with numerous other types of support. This year’s event is split into three different competitions: Men’s Women’s, and Co-ed groups, which are composed of many Greek, Academic, Religious, and other UT organizations. The University of Toledo takes much pride in these events, raising awareness and donations toward a worthy cause. Current sponsors of Songfest include Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and Mortar Board National Honor Society, both of which hold their recognition and tapping ceremonies during the event. Each organization participating in Songfest was challenged to come up with a fundraising goal to go above and beyond what they raised last year supporting children diagnosed with terminal cancer, which was a grand total of $25,000. According to Joy T. Bennett’s journal article Stepping Up, Joy deliberates the importance of fundraising in sororities and fraternities toward their philanthropy, providing money to improve the lives of many people and ensuring that non-profit organizations are still able to exist. She states, “Life is a gist, and it offers us privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by...

...Greek Life groups can be found across university campuses ranging from private colleges to state universities. Everyone has their own different reasons for joining Greek Life. The first known collegiate secret society, F.H.C., was established on the campus of the College of William and Mary on November 11, 1750 (“The Flat Hat Club,” 1917). F.H.C. stood for the secret phrase “fraternitas, humanitas et cognito,” (Bonzo, 2014). Every university has their own rules and policies that they require their members to follow. Throughout these different groups, you can find students with many different majors that still come together to be involved in Greek Life. Throughout our study of these many different groups, we interviewed students from Central College, University of Iowa, and Iowa State. We made sure to include several students from the four different groups we have on campus and of both genders. As for the two other colleges, we asked a female from University of Northern Iowa and then a male from Iowa State about their experiences. Here at Central College, we have a small but active Greek community. Currently, we have two sororities called Zeta Upsilon (ZY) and Alpha Delta Epsilon (ADE). We also have an all-male fraternity called Theta Kappa Alpha (OKA) and a co-ed fraternity called Alpha Zeta Chi (AZX). Most of our sororities and fraternities are service-based and it is even written into their constitutions that they must complete a minimum number of community service events...

...Seahawks Fans Discover Beer Hijinks Tickets to watch an NFL game aren’t cheap, and for those of us who don’t have corporate entities sponsoring our fandom and nacho habit, the opportunity to attend one is a big deal. We wear jerseys to be properly attired, take photos so we can be properly nostalgic and buy overpriced beers to get properly inebriated. And because we go through so much to make cheering on our football team a big event, most of us are even willing to splurge on the big beers. Support the team, right? Everyone is in this together. Unless they aren’t. Two intrepid Seahawks fans noticed something curious recently about the beer cups they had just purchased at Qwest Field in Seattle. The medium 16-ounce – which sold for $7.25 – and the large 20-ounce – which sold for $8.50 – held exactly the same amount of beer! Though it didn’t take a very complicated experiment to prove this hypothesis, the company that manages the stadium – First & Goal – was willing to admit the liquid discrepancy after an “internal investigation”. Representatives were also unsure how or when the conundrum began. The other issue confounding First & Goal was simply why there was so much outrage. After all, people who paid only $7.25 for a 20-ounce beer should feel like they won a mini, alcoholic lottery, right? Some of them may have, but in cases like these, the more vocal group is typically the one who feels more slighted. And for the long-suffering Seattle fans who remember...

...What is your opinion on sororities? Do you think that they are treated unfairly? I don’t think so. I know there’s a few stereotypes for certain sororities but those are not made by people that really know anything about them. I know for a fact, some people think that sorority girls are easy to get with, sleep with whatever, they’re all bitchy, all they care about is themselves, and they only hang out with their sisters. Those are some of the stereotypes that we have but none of them are true, I’ve been around them for multiple years and I know plenty of them and enough of them to know that those aren’t true and it’s not fair for them to have people think about them like that. What are some stereotypes that you’ve heard about fraternity guys and sorority girls? I mean I did just touch on sorority girls, people say that they’re bitchy, they’re easy to sleep with, all they do is hang out with all their sisters, and they don’t care about anyone else or support anyone else and obviously none of those are true. For fraternities, I’d say some stereotypes would be they’re aggressive towards women, all they do is party, they are douches, assholes, whatever kind of language you want to use and that they aren’t supportive. They are kind of just there to drink every day, which again is not true because you know we support everyone in all our events and do we drink a little bit, yea but that’s not our main goal. That’s kind of just like a hanging out with the bros thing. Do you think joining...

...Social Media James H. Allen Professor Sergio Gregorio Business Law 100 9 March, 2014 As the prevalence of social media continues to rise consumers are recognizing ways in which social media can direct them to better sources of purchasing. As a result, business are now jumping on the social media bandwagon at a higher than ever pace, embracing social networks to achieve their marketing and business goals. So what are the components of legally astute media marketing managers who use media outlets for consumer transactions? What are the alternative dispute resolutions available and which one would work best? Since consumer transactions can occur across state lines how can the federal government best control these transactions? Which branch of government can effectuate the most significant impact on regulating consumer transactions? Does agency relationship exist on social media sites between the social media provider and the business that utilizes the site for advertising? These are a few questions to be discussed about the social media giant Facebook. What are the four components of a legally astute social media marketing manager? According to (Bagley 2013) “They are a set of value-laden attitudes about the importance of law to the firms success, a proactive approach to the legal issues and regulations, the ability to exercise informed judgment when managing the legal aspects of business, lastly, context-specific knowledge of the law and the appropriate...

...TO: Supervising Attorney From: Jennifer A. Ramos This memo is on prenuptial agreements and their utilities. The Uniform Premarital and Martial Agreement Act (UPMAA) is a Uniform Act drafted in 1983 by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL, 2012). Pennsylvania has not adopted the UPMAA. In Pennsylvania the requirements for a prenuptial agreement are as follows: • It must be a written agreement; • Both parties must execute the document voluntarily; • Both parties must be provided fair and reasonable disclosure of their property and/or financial obligations; • Both parties must have full knowledge of the obligations for each party regarding property and finances; and • The agreement is to be executed by the marriage date. (Pa Cons. Stat. § 3106). A prenuptial agreement in Pennsylvania must be a written agreement, it cannot be verbal. The agreement must also be signed by both parties voluntarily, with a witness and a notary public; this must be done before the marriage is commenced. Both parties in the agreement must be in full knowledge of all financial and property decisions that are made in the agreement; nothing can be added after it is signed, unless there is a legal amendment. Prenuptial agreements should not be compulsory. Prenuptial agreements should be spoken about beforehand and should either be agreed upon or disagreed upon. Making a decision like that is something you will be done together for the rest of your life, given...

...Legal and Ethical Environment of Business your T name AMERICAN INTERCONTINENTAL UNIVERSITY Abstract How important is it to have freedom to contract and practical commerce and be technologically neutral. Can you create a new computer chip design it , bubble wrap it and ship it for sale and still have ownership of that computer chip? With the Uniform Commercial Code and Uniform computer Information Transaction Act they will shed light of how you are protected by the government. Not just consumers but business are govern a like . . Before the UCC and the UCITA, the first U.S attempt to promote uniformity in commercial laws from state to state is the commerce clause. The commerce clause of the constitution, provides congress with authority to regulate business in different states. The commerce clause extends to all instrumentalities of interstate commerce as well as to intrastate conduct that has substantial effect on interstate commerce. The UCITA is intended to facilitate the licensing of computer related intellectual property, with an emphasis on permitting owners of software the ability to maintain control over their intellectual property forever. The UCC is designed to facilitate the sale, shipment and delivery of tangible goods identified in a contract. The biggest difference I see between UCITA and UCC is UCITA gives the software designer control of their property even after sale of their property...

...electronic records and signatures with paper writings and manually signed signatures, which ultimately helps remove barriers to electronic commerce. Once difference between the two is that UETA is state and E-Sign is Federal. You can trace the creation of E-Sign back to UETA. Keep in mind that UETA only applies to Article 2 and 2A transactions and as of July 2006, only forty-six states to include the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands have adopted UETA (White & Summers, 2010). Due to the fact that all of the states failed to adopt UETA, Congress felt the need to enacted E-Sign in 2000; which in some ways covers the same areas. UETA is one of several United States Uniforms Acts that has been proposed by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL). The basic purpose of the UETA is to help align the differing state laws in areas such as, retention of paper records with a main focus on checks; and the validity of electronic...

...Week Five Assignment Jorge Apantenco DeVry University Busn. 420 Professor Kent August 10, 2014 Uniform Commercial Code “The UCC is a model act drafted by the American Law Institute and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. This model act contains uniform rules that govern commercial transactions. For the UCC or any part of the UCC to become law in a state, that state needs to enact the UCC as its commercial law statute. Every state (except Louisiana, which has adopted only parts of the UCC) has enacted the UCC or the majority of the UCC as a commercial statute (Cheeseman, 2013, p. 300).” “Generally, Article 2 of the UCC applies to all sales contracts, whether they involve merchants or not. However, Article 2 contains several provisions that either apply only to merchants or impose a greater duty on merchants. UCC 2-104(1) defines a merchant as (1) a person who deals in the goods of the kind involved in the transaction or (2) a person who by his or her occupation holds himself or herself out as having knowledge or skill peculiar to the goods involved in the transaction (Cheeseman, p. 302).” A scenario of how Article 2 of the UCC makes changes to the common law of contracts is tied to how the common law rule works in the first place an offer must be made definite when regarding its terms of when it was accepted. Under Article 2 of the UCC it allows a sales contract to be made by a seller even though terms can be left open for discretion, as long...

...Francis revoked but did not tell Joan. Mrs. Gagnon dies two months later and Mr. Gagnon signed a purchase and sale agreement for the Shelburne farm. He gave the property in Hillsborough to Frank. When Mr. Gagnon told Joan about the sale of the land she, not realizing it had been revoked, used her POA to transfer the Shelburne property to a trust that she created and controlled. Mr. Gagnon’s lawyer wrote to Joan demanding that she return the Shelburne property to him, she refused. There are two issues in this case. Did Joan have the right to convey the Shelburne farm to a trust that she had established? Also, does the property belong to the trust or to Mr. Gagnon? Uniform Power of Attorney Act of 2006 According to The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, the concept of “power of attorney” was first incorporated into the Uniform Probate Code in 1969 to offer an inexpensive method of surrogate decision making to those whose modest assets did not justify pre-incapacity planning with a trust or post-incapacity property management with a guardianship. Over the years many states adopted non-uniform provisions to deal with issues on with the Uniform Probate Code and the original Uniform Durable Power of Attorney Act were silent. The Uniform Power of Attorney Act was enacted in 2006 and enhances the usefulness of durable powers while protecting the principal,...

...effective July 1, 1960. Proposals to enact the Code will undoubtedly come before legislatures in other states in the course of the next few years, and it seems likely that several other states will join the procession at their 1959 sessions (Braucher, 1958). The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC or the Code), first published in 1952, is one of a number of uniform acts that have been promulgated in conjunction with efforts to harmonize the law of sales and other commercial transactions in all 50 states within the United States of America. The Uniform Commercial Code, or UCC, is a very large collection of legal rules regarding many important business, or “commercial,” activities. The UCC originally was created by two national nongovernmental legal organizations: the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) and the American Law Institute (ALI) (Steingold, 2013). As the word “Uniform” in its title suggests, a primary purpose of the UCC is to make business activities more predictable and efficient by making business laws highly consistent across all American states. The Code is intended to simplify, clarify and modernize commercial law, permit the continued expansion of commercial practices, and to make uniform the law among the various jurisdictions...

...The U.C.C. is the longest and most elaborate of the uniform acts. It has been a long-term, joint project of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) and the American Law Institute (ALI). Judge Herbert F. Goodrich was the Chairman of the Editorial Board of the original 1952 edition [1], and the Code itself was drafted by some of the top legal scholars in the United States. The Code, as the product of private organizations, is not itself the law, but only recommendation of the laws that should be adopted in the states. Once enacted in a state by the state's legislature, it becomes true law and is codified into the state’s code of statutes. When the Code is adopted by a state, it may be adopted verbatim as written by ALI/NCCUSL, or may be adopted with specific changes deemed necessary by the state legislature. Unless such changes are minor, they can affect the purpose of the Code in promoting uniformity of law among the various states. The ALI/NCCUSL have also established a permanent editorial board for the Code. This board has issued a number of official comments and other published papers concerning the Code. Although these commentaries do not have the force of law, courts interpreting the Code often cite them as persuasive authority in determining the effect of one or more provisions. Courts interpreting the Code generally seek to harmonize their interpretations with those of other states that have adopted the same or a similar provision, except...

The 2014 growth was about one percentage point lower than predicted in last year’s African Economic Outlook, as the global economy remained weaker and some African countries saw severe domestic problems of various natures.
