...Running head: National Security National Security Teresa Turner Strayer University Garner Campus ECO320503016*201005 Professor Carol Scott December 3, 2010 Abstract The National Security Council is a forum for President’s to consider national security and foreign policy matters with their senior national security advisors and cabinet officials. The council started under President Truman, and the Council’s function is to advise and assist the President on national security and foreign policies. The Council is also the President’s principal arm for coordinating these policies among various government agencies. National Security is based on four basic strategies to preserve security. The defense and deterrence rank first and second, followed by détente diplomacy and disarmament. These four strategies are used whether in combination or alone. Technology has always influenced their strategy. When technology changes, what the country does to protect themselves changes too. This will entail what the U.S. goals are and what we stand for. Third, I will look at how the United States strengthens alliances to defeat global terrorism and work to prevent attacks against our friends and us. Fourth, I will explain how we work with others to defuse regional conflicts. National Security The struggles of the twentieth century between liberty and totalitarianism ended with victory for the forces of freedom—and a single sustainable model for national success:...

...Individual Privacy vs. National Security Anthony Sifuentes ENG 122 English Composition II Instructor vonFrohling February 13, 2012 Individual Privacy vs. National Security The need to protect National Security is far more important than individual privacy. The greatest part of living in the United States of America is the freedom that we have. That freedom and the right to live freely is protected by various government agencies. From time to time, the privacy a person has may have to be invaded to guarantee the security of the country and other citizens. Everyone has the right to not have their life controlled by the government, but it has the right to make sure that citizens are not doing anything to threaten the security of the country. Our freedom also comes at a price; that price is the need of the government to monitor some of the things we do so ensure that the United States is not in danger of a terrorist attack or an attempted overthrow of the government. The most glaring example of how National Security is more important than the privacy of an individual is September 11, 2001. The terrorist attacks that day have changed how Americans see our National Security and it must take precedence over anything else. One definition found for national security is: “The measures taken by the state to ensure the security of itself, or its citizens or subjects.” (Thomas, 2007) He goes on to explain that is both a right and a responsibility for a state to protect its...

...National Security Should Be More Important Enemy of the state depicts an evil NSA team conducting illegal surveillance on a labor lawyer Robert, who was supposed to have a videotape of a politically motivated murder. Robert’s life was peaceful and happy until he suddenly met his college friend Zavitz in a shop, who passed the videotape secretly to him. Ever since that moment, Robert’s life was turned upside down. A special team in NSA soon discovered that he might have the videotape, and then the team raided his house and planted surveillance devices in order to find the videotape. His every movement was tracked and every word was tapped, which destroyed Robert’s life: he was fired from his work, his bank accounts were frozen, his wife threw him out of home since photos about his meeting former girlfriend were sent to his wife. After stumbling around for a bit trying to figure out what's happening to him, Robert turned to Brill for help, who turns out be an ex-NSA agent and who was responsible for inventing some of the surveillance devices. Together, they fought the NSA using the same techniques used against them, and finally Robert got rid of all his accusation and went back to his peaceful life again. Although the plot of the movie might look like a little Hollywood style, the surveillance tools feathered in the movie, such as, phone wiretapping, Global Positioning System, voice and face recognition system, and some much advanced ones, are generally in use today. Apparently...

...HUMAN AND NATIONAL SECURITY: ENMESHING CONCEPTUALIZATION OF SECURITY PARADIGM IN EMERGING SECURITY DYNAMICS Introduction and Background In the realm of international relations and political science, there has been the recurring debate on the human versus national security. Theorists and scholars, like Goucha and Crowley (2008, 57) enrolled into the ethos of realism take the state-oriented view of the security and places the dominance of national security over human security; whereas, those who take the idealistic view of the entire episode take the human security as the primary level of security to be protected by the state (Mathew, 2010, 78). The idea of human security gained eminence in security studies with developments taken place in the aftermath of the post-Cold War era. The Cold War put the security apparatuses and concepts over all other dominant themes of national and pubic life and couched them into strategic and national cultures all over the world. Now as the world is moving into new era of globalization, economic expansion and post-industrial revolution, the focus has also been shifted from national security to other facets of global world like climate change, AIDS/HIV and poverty. In this work, the contrasting debate between national security and human security will be presented in an argumentative style. For this purpose, the concept of human security will be derived from UNHP Report of 1994 whereas the concept of national security will be couched in its classical...

...The Australia human rights government website expresses interest regarding how the policies involving national security that have been applied are ensuring that Australians are protected from security threats and that all efforts to protect Australia's security should mostly comply with basic human rights standards that Australia has agreed to uphold fully. Looking through the counter-terrorism white paper report, it states that the government is strongly committed to taking strong action in order to protect Australians and reduce the risk of attacks, but with that a number of approaches are to be made for that to happen. Stronger border management preventing the movement of individuals who try to enter Australia that may have some sort of...

...The day America is not threatened by terrorist attacks will be a good day, maybe even the best day for some. But when people argue that privacy is better than security, it is hard to abolish the threats of terrorists. People would rather not have the government seeing what they are doing online than being safe on trips, at work, at school, anywhere. With the amount of terrorist attacks that are happening in the world today, national security trumps privacy in the United States. People are ok with putting every aspect of their live on social media, but they don’t want the government looking at what you are doing on the internet, even though invading the public’s privacy, it is saving their lives. Some people may not see it yet, but when the US is not under threat anymore, then they will. Wouldn’t you rather be safe at school or at work than have somebody potentially looking at your computer? If you’re not doing anything bad online that will raise suspicion then...

...Discuss the emergence of the Ebola pandemic as a threat to national security INTRODUCTION National security is the protection or the safety of a country’s secrets and its citizens. The term national security encompasses within it economic security, monetary security, energy security, environmental security, military security, political security and security of energy and natural resources. Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. There are currently no licensed Ebola vaccines. As times progress threats to national security are constantly increasing with threats such as climate change, transnational crime, espionage, cyber terrorism and bio-terrorism. This paper is going to look at Ebola as a threat to national security. Weaponization Ebola's exponential spread has rekindled fears that terrorists may seek to turn the virus into a powerful weapon of mass destruction. Ebola virus is classified as a biosafety level 4 agent, as well as a Category A bioterrorism agent by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It has the potential to be weaponized for use in biological warfare, National security and infectious disease experts agree the obstacles to a large-scale assault with Ebola are formidable. For starters, a bioterrorist would have to obtain the virus and be able to...

...A Study of the Causes of the Failure of the National Security Personnel System Andre Zephrine M. Pantaleo, Ph.D., M.B.A. Strayer University April 25, 2010 Context of the Problem The National Security Personnel System (NSPS) is a pay system based upon the caveat of being paid for performance. It was created in 2006 through Congressional authorization especially for the Department of Defense (DoD). Implementation of the system began in 2006 as a replacement for the General Schedule grade and step (GS) system used by the rest of the federal government. NSPS’s policies differ concerning hiring, reassignment, pay, promotion, tenure and recognition. Under the GS system, there are automatic pay increases which do not exist under NSPS. On October 29, 2009, President Obama signed legislation that repealed NSPS and restored DoD employees to the GS pay system. Full implementation of the switch back to the GS system is to occur no later than January 1, 2012. This research proposal proposes that NSPS did not succeed because of poor consideration for review boards, self evaluation, and allowances of discrimination through intention – speculatively – and more importantly unintentionally. This research proposal also posits that because of adverse impacts, similar systems would also be unsuccessful. Statement of the Problem The National Security Personnel System (NSPS) is a pay-for-performance pay system which replaced the General Schedule (GS) grade and step system for the...

...National Security Terrorism can be looked at from many different points of view. The definition of terrorism is the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. That doesn’t put a target on foreign countries alone. Terrorism can happen between Americans as well. Though the most fatal attacks such as 9/11, Pearl Harbor, and Boston Marathon Bombings were done by groups such as the al-Qaeda, Imperial Japanese Navy and as little as two foreign Soviet brothers who immigrated, became citizens, then attacked. Many things can be done to protect Americans at home. Records could be kept of every action someone makes. Surveillance of the internet sites accessed, text messages and phone calls made, and financial transactions. Being able to access and monitor these records will allow National Security to prevent attacks before they happen. A system could be made where they don’t monitor 24/7 but there would be red zones or red flags, which would alert National Security to investigate or watch over whatever is happening. This shouldn’t be a problem to many Americans if they claim they’re not doing anything wrong. This is a similar scenario as the National Terrorism Advisory System. It alerts to communicate information about terrorist threats by providing timely, detailed information to the public, government agencies, first responders, public sector organizations, airports and other transportation hubs. Using available information, the alerts will provide a concise...

...SECURITY PLANNING FOR THE 2004 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION CASE REPORT MSFM- Organizational Behavior January 6, 2014 Case Summary In November 2002 the Democratic National Committee selected Boston, Massachusetts to host its July 2004 convention. Boston had beaten out other larger cities which included New York, Miami and Detroit to win the convention. The convention would nominate local politician John Kerry to run against President George W. Bush in the upcoming 2004 election. It was hoped that the event would bring an economic windfall to the city and also showcase the historical and fashionable attractions to the national and international media. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino had worked hard to bring the Democratic National Convention to Boston. The city had tried in 2000 to host the convention but lost out to Los Angeles. On its second try with the help of Senator Edward Kennedy and the state’s congressional delegation Boston was successful. Mayor Menino was very excited for Boston to be in the media spotlight for the four days in July that the convention would be held. It would give the city a chance to bask in the limelight and show its rich historical past and its vibrant present. The Mayor also added that he saw the convention as a challenge for Boston. We’d never had an event of this magnitude. Menino was confident the city would meet the challenge and fare better than others that had hosted political conventions in the past. The city’s elation...

...Discussion Forum 3 National Security Personnel System 1. I was surprised to learn that in 2002, President George W. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under his administration. I was under the impression that this agency had already existed. Prior to the September 11, 2011, terrorist attack. 2. Another interesting fact, DHS and the Department of Defense (DOD) were given their own personal system. However, President Bush was given the authority to “exclude federal agencies, subdivisions and units…from relevant labor subsections. This was a major problem with the union because the National Security Personnel System (NSPS) was to oversee about 760, 000 federal government employees. However, the union to NSPS to court and...
