The later founding of a settlement near Tadoussac would allow the French to continue the settlement previously undertaken there, in order that our subjects may go there to trade without hindrance. And in view of the proposition to us of Sieur de Monts, gentleman in ordinary of our chamber, and our lieutenant-general in that country, to make a settlement, on condition of our giving him means and supplies for sustaining the expense of it. This mutually successful trading environment allowed both sides to exchange goods that provide the local tribes with weapons, glass, metals and even cookware, which all would be integrated into their culture over time, producing many positive outcomes in the tribe’s development. There were some negative side effects that included some aspects of culture loss based on their reliance of the goods of the French and others in order to survive, the old culture was becoming more lost and interaction and …show more content…
The French know that they are in trouble when, “the English have begun by the most powerful and best disciplined Indians of all America, whom they have excited entirely against us by their avowed protection and manifest usurpation of the sovereignty they claim over the country of those Indians which appertains beyond contradiction to the King for nearly a century without the English having, up to this present time, had any pretence thereto. They also employ the Iroquois to excite all our other Indians against us. They sent those last year to attack the Huron’s and the Outawas, our most ancient subjects.” The ability of the French to trade with the native populations would significantly decrease with more outside influence by the English and their native allies in the French territory in the new

Native American Culture: Video Analysis

...This source is an educational video about the early life of Native American culture. I chose this source because I like that students can get information from a visual source. The video would be a great way to help introduce my lesson because it is not very long and it gives a very brief over view of what students will be learning about. This correlates with my glee that says students will summarize the viability and diversity of Native American culture before Europeans came. Questions from DOK for the source: 1. Level 1- How did the Native Americans document what happened in their lives? Use evidence from the video to answer the question. 2. Level 2- Make observations to answer the question, why do we need to know about Native American early culture? 3....

Native American Heritage Month Keeping The Culture Alive Analysis

...crisis, and the negative attitudes toward Middle Eastern cultures, particularly in Europe and the USA. The magazine describes very well that the argument from far-right groups about maintaining a clean, European culture is rather invalid. This is because there is no clean culture – multiple groups and cultures throughout history have influenced every other culture. The Viking age in Norway is a good example. We see this era as the root of Scandinavian culture today, but the fact is that the Vikings were very much influenced by catholic culture, for instance, as Norway was Christianized at this...

Arguement Analysis on Cultural Appropriation

...Argument Analysis “Perhaps the most intangible aspect of Native peoples’ existence is compromised within [tribal] stories” (Tsosie 302). In society today we are seeing the growth of other cultures being incorporated into the fashions trends, movies, and in commercial use. The term, “cultural appropriation”, comes into use when discussing the problems Native Americans face in society today. It is defined as “the taking- from a culture that is not one’s own-of intellectual property, cultural expressions or artifacts, history and the ways of knowledge” (Tsosie 310). Cultural appropriation today under the liberal tradition follow these suppositions “if non-Indians want to dress up like Indians and imitate Indian religion, then they should have the freedom to do so” (Tsosie 310). The fight for the right of ownership of cultural rights and property is not only intellectual but political as well. For many years, ethnic groups, especially Native Americans, have been in the fight to have returned what was originally them. They also argue that the portrayal of their culture in movies promote stereotypes about them within society (Tsosie 301). People misuse their clothing, symbols, and religious practices. Other arguments also exist like that “cultural appropriation harms the appropriated community because it interferes with the community’s ability to define itself and established its own identity” (Tsosie 313). In the United States, Native people are protected by “special rights” (Tsosie...

Native American Mascots Research Paper

...The Chicago Blackhawks, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Chiefs, and Atlanta Braves are all professional sports teams in America that use Native American culture to represent them through the means of tribe names, logos, and mascots. These teams have received a lot of media attention around the debate as to whether the representation of Native Americans is offensive or not. Controversy surrounding Native American mascots first came into the public eye during the 1960s Native American Civil Rights movement, where the use of these mascots was criticized for being insulting. However, the people who conceived these teams, knowingly or not, created an atmosphere of prejudice and discrimination growing the brands into multi-million...

Providing Culturally Competent Care to a Native American Patient Introduction

...Providing Culturally Competent Care to a Native American Patient Introduction When caring for a Native American patient, it is imperative that the nurse provide culturally competent care. In this scenario, there are two main dimensions along which cultural tensions between the patient and the nurse can arise. The first pertains to the actual practices and values of Native American culture, which may be at odds with the practices and values of dominant healthcare institutions. The second is both broader and more subtle: it pertains to the historical relationship of the Native Americans peoples vis-à-vis mainstream U.S. society. After addressing both of these dimensions, suggestions will be made with respect to how a nurse could bridge this gap and provide culturally competent care for the Native American patient. To start with, it is important for the nurse to acknowledge that the Native American perspective on health may simply diverge from the default culture's perspective in some significant ways. For example, BigFoot and Funderburk (2011) have discussed how Native American conceptions of family are different from the contemporary norm, and how this results in the need to adapt nursing interventions in this sphere to the cultural context of Native Americans. Further, these alternative conceptions are often supported by a whole alternate philosophy of life: for example, while Native American culture certainly doesn't advocate passivity "in the face of grave potential...

Contact Zone Essay

...because two cultures disagree and choose to settle it, and the strong culture prevails. African American and Caucasian people used to be exiled for getting married, because they were different. There are millions of different cultures in the world today and every day is an example of how they clash. An author, Mary Louise Pratt, wrote an essay referring to these conflicts. Her essay made it possible to further examine these struggles. In works such as The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and “Family Stories From the Trail of Tears” Pratt’s essay makes it possible to deeply examine the clashing culture and gain insight into how it impacted the world today. Mary Louise Pratt’s essay is called “Arts of the Contact Zone”. She defines a contact zone as a space where two cultures wrestle with each other’s ideas and beliefs. She goes on to discuss how these contact zones have come to help shape society, and how the aftermath is world changing. Her essay provides an excellent analysis of what happens when two distinct cultures come into contact, and most importantly, how that affects others. She also examines the two phenomena that occur as a result of the Contact Zone. One sensation, authoethnography, gives the reader first hand insight into cultures. The other, transculturation, shows what happens after the contact zone. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao takes on an entirely new meaning with the help of Pratt’s tools of analysis. There are two distinct cultures, that of the...

She explains how other children see it as a service for them to be representing her culture as their mascot.
