...Who Killed Nature Vs Nurture Princess J. Waring Strayer University This assignment will discuss nature vs nurture my research will touch on the Nature vs nurture controversy. There is some debate that nature vs nurture is separable and hence as comparable. There are some who believe that nature vs nurture is “transmission of something biological”, the hard inheritance of “fixed entities” rather than “malleable (or soft) particles” {p. 21f}. There is some variation that arises from inherited differences {some parents pass on smart genes to their kids? some parents may pass on books known as environmental difference. {Orr 2003, cited in Keller p. 3} Changing the debate and the question Keller believed in behavior genetics which James Tabery called the “defense-by-distinction’. These were standard response of behavioral geneticists although there critics didn’t believe they were able to make any connection between individual development or cause or differences in a population {Tabery 2007}. This view was of behavioral genetics is based on false opinions of a quantitative report on genetic an environmental contribution sheds some light on the developmental process. There were some findings {that the heritability of personality traits increases over the lifespan}. {Gottlieb 2003, 338} Beyond interactionism and dichotomous thinking As several researcher disbelieve the theory of nature vs nurture had no distinction which was call the ‘environmental...

...Nature vs. Nurture The nature versus nurture is about the importance of people natural qualities versus personal experiences. Personal experiences are nurture. It’s the different between in distinguishing the differences in a person actions, such as physical and behavioral traits. People mostly get all of their behavior from nurture. Both of these terms play a role in development. EDITNature vs nurture in personality traits Personality is a frequently cited example of a heritable trait that has been studied in twins and adoptions. Identical twins reared apart are far more similar in personality than randomly selected pairs of people. Likewise, identical twins are more similar than fraternal twins. Also, biological siblings are more similar in personality than adoptive siblings. Each observation suggests that personality is heritable to a certain extent. However, these same study designs allow for the examination of environment as well as genes. Adoption studies also directly measure the strength of shared family effects. Adopted siblings share only family environment. Unexpectedly, some adoption studies indicate that by adulthood the personalities of adopted siblings are no more similar than random pairs of strangers. This would mean that shared family effects on personality are zero by adulthood. As is the case with personality, non-shared environmental effects are often found to out-weigh shared environmental effects. That is, environmental effects that are typically thought...

...One of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology is the Nature vs Nurture debate. Each of these sides have good points that it's really hard to decide whether a person's development is predisposed in his DNA, or a majority of it is influenced by this life experiences and his environment. As of now, we know that both nature and nurture play important roles in human development, but we have not known yet whether we are developed majorly because of nature or due to nurture. Nature The coding of genes in each cell in us humans determine the different traits that we have, more dominantly on the physical attributes like eye color, hair color, ear size, height, and other traits. However, it is still not known whether the more abstract attributes like personality, intelligence, sexual orientation, likes and dislikes are gene-coded in our DNA, too. One of the hottest issues against nature theory is that there may be an existing "gay gene", which explains that gays are actually born that way. Another issue is that the criminal acts, tendency to divorce and aggressive behavior causing abuse can be justified by the "behavioral genes" once the researchers have proven their existence. On the other hand, the behavioral genes are somewhat proven to exist when we take a look at fraternal twins. When fraternal twins are reared apart, they show the same similarities in behavior and response as if they have been reared together. Nurture The nurture theory holds that genetic...

...What are your thoughts on the Nature vs. Nurture argument? One of the biggest debates that continue to remain unsolved is the Nature vs. Nurture argument. My opinion is that the answer is not definitely one or the other but a mixture of the two. This argument tries to establish the role of genes and the environment in human nature. In some situations it is obvious that genetics have a greater role in shaping a person. An example of that is a person that desires to drink alcohol. Some people would say that the feeling is pre-determined by their genetics, while some people would believe that outside sources such as manufacturers and peers have a greater influence. This debate turns out to be one that is hard to explain because there are many factors involved. Some people express concerns that could be applied scientifically, some have true legitimacy that may not be answerable, and some just do not make sense. To make things more complex with this debate, it seems that things are blended together and there is no distinctiveness to separate the roles. Another issue is that some of the uncertainty comes from the genetic language itself. It seems like we try to sort out the contributions from nature and nurture when in fact the distinction is between what is in born and what we receive after birth. It will always go back to genes and the environment which keeps the debate on going. It is obvious the truth lies within nature and nurture, but it has been difficult to determine...

...There has been a long debate and much research into the Nature vs. Nurture theories. Being that do we inherit traits from our biological parents or does the environments in which we are raised contribute to how we turn out as adults. Sometimes it seems that that there is no black or white answer to the age-old question of what contributes to human behavior, personality, and psychopathology. There are common traits within biological parents that children can pick up but it seems that in some cases, children can be adaptive to their environment. So we shall examine this curiosity that takes us into finding out whether we are genetically inherit to some of the biological traits of our parents or if living in certain environments develop our social well being. There have been studies into schizophrenia and the genetic traits that may be passed on to the children. The study was conducted to observe children who had biological parents who suffered from schizophrenia and their adoptive parents showed no signs of the illness. The study was also conducted on children from biological parents who showed no signs of schizophrenia adopted by a parent who later showed signs or family history of the illness. The research showed that although there is no definitive answer for what causes schizophrenia, children whose biological parents that suffered from schizophrenia had a higher recidivism rate for contracting the disease. “This study also showed that the adoptees whose biological...

...Riddle 1 Leanna Riddle Psychology 201 Ms. Brown March 20, 2011 Nature Versus Nurture Debate For ages now, the Nature Versus Nurture Debate has been debated. Whether Nature, dealing with your heredity, or Nurture, referring to life experiences and the environment, has more of an impact on who we are today. When talking about Nature Versus Nurture, you have your genotype which influences your Nature and your phenotype which influences your Nurture. Your genotype is provided by your genetic code. It is your genetic make-up and is determined by the sequencing of chemicals in your DNA. Your phenotype is how you physically manifest yourself from environmental circumstances and experiences. I’ve grown up having pets and always being around animals. My favorite place to go when I was a little girl was the Zoo. I’m very obsessed with animals. My Nurture is always having a pet and taking care of animals. I’ve always known the responsibility of taking care of animals. It is very natural for me to be around animals and constantly find other ways of helping them. My Nature would come genetically from my parents who both are also animal lovers and have had pets their whole lives. I was raised to love animals and it’s very obvious now because I’m going to school to work with animals. Growing up I had a cat named was Pandora. She belonged to my mother before my older sister was even born. She lived to be 17 in human years. After she died the house Riddle 2 wasn’t the same...

...3/24/2014 Nature versus Nurture | [Type the author name] | | Understanding self | UNDERSTANDING SELF Born and raised on the small Caribbean Island of Jamaica. I was born to a wonderful, loving caring mother who sacrificed so much for me. She made me who I am to say the least. She provided more than just a home to live in and food on the table. She instilled a work ethic and a goal oriented mentality that has stuck with me this far. In order to understand me, I wanted to just give a brief review of my upbringing, and then tie it into the person I am today. A young man growing up in urban areas is faced with life’s challenges at rather young ages. Poverty, violence, education, was the three options that seemed to be all I had. My mom along with the help of my family (grandmother, aunts, and uncles) made sure the first two played no part in my upbringing. Growing up in a single parent home as I did, I had to make more of an effort to stay focus than most kids in my neighborhood. It was every evident from an early age that the chances to make it out were limited. One option was education and the other was crime. My choice of path was laid out in front of me by mother. She spent her nights trying to keep my nose in a book as she had hers. The demands she placed on me and the rewards on which I enjoyed even though they were not lavish. Hearing my friends call my name to come outside to play only rivaled my mother’s voice in the back of my head from saying I need you...

...NATURE VS NUTURE 1 Nature and Nurture Development Mary Smith PSY 330 Tim Wilder January 26, 2014 NATURE VS NUTURE 2 The nature versus nurture debate, as it relates to human development, is unique and gravitates to all humans for decades. In the field of psychology, the question frequently arises as to how much of human behavior is due to environment and how much is due to genetic influence. There are various methods used to determine if violent behavior is a function of nature or nurture. There was a study conducted in Germany and the UK, which involved a child’s behavior due to their environment and how much is due to their genetics. “It is society (or culture, respectively) into which the children are born, with its prevailing behavioral norms, creeds, social structures, attitudes, mentalities, etc., which imprints and profiles the newborn humans” (Voland, E., 2000). Nature are the elements which make up a person such as their qualities. Nurture is to raise, educate, support and love a person. Violence is a natural phenomenon that should be treated, or violence is a learned behavior that children should be taught to avoid. Before making an assumption or decision, onlookers of the debate should consider how genetics may come into play in the behaviors of individuals, how environment may affect an individual’s behaviors, and how they both may interact to create violence as a whole. Nature refers to an individual's...

Where the Kids Learn Early," is about the title basicly, children in Oklahoma particularly starting off their learning early in a Pre-K program. The author, Nicholas D. However, the title of the study or conductor was not enclose. The proposed solution, that is being used in Oklahoma research, is a free preschool program for 4-year olds and even some lessons for parents on how to read and speak to children more fregently. Oklahoma also provides additonal help to children under 4 in need. He talks a bit about Obamas propostion of a program like this and the critizsims republicans have of it, which are that it may be a fuzzy new social program, or a legacy for Obama. The article did explain the cause, early preschool, very well and I do see how it is lnked to development, because of the articles importance of nurture during the childs developement and our childrens learning developments relationship to later choices in life, such as crime, pregnancy, and dropping out. Discussions 1. The position of the article is pretty clear before I even got to the authors name. The Authors choice of words, " high-quality preschool"...

...Nature vs. Nurture Homosexuality, Addictions and Intelligence There have always been disputes on whether the decision to be homosexual or heterosexual was based on biological or environmental factors. These disputes are known as the Nature vs. Nurture argument. The two sides argue over how gender is chosen within a person. Based on reproductive organs, sex is easily determined at birth: male or female. Gender, however; is the sexual identity an individual takes on. It is possible for sex and gender to be different. For an example of nurture children who were both born with an injured or damaged reproductive organ, males usually can be raised successfully as females. In order to understand which factor is the deciding factor of a person’s gender, both sides of the case must be fully evaluated. DNA studies which appear to prove that gender is a genetic trait. Researchers have analyzed the makeup of the human brain of homosexuals and heterosexuals seeking a connection between gender and the brains physiology. They found when studying the part of the brain directly related to a persons’ sexual drive, that homosexuals had an enlarged hypothalamus, whereas heterosexuals had a normal one indicating a direct correlation between the brain and gender selections (AllPsych). In researching DNA’s role in gender identity, some scientist have identified the gene that determines a person’s sexual preference. Although there are mounting evidence of the existence of a “gay...

...processes, we experience various periods of development. Biological is defined as changes in an individual’s physical nature; cognitive is changes in thought, intelligence and language; and socioemotional is changes within a person’s relationships & friendships with others as well as their own emotions and personality. From the prenatal period and along the way, we learn how to use our minds and bodies to communicate, develop friendships, learn how to love, work, play and achieve. From early childhood we are learning to be self sufficient on to adulthood, where we are seeking how to be independent and expand personally and socially. Eventually we get to late adulthood and our bodies are going through a multitude of changes as we get ready to enter the final life cycle. For me personally, the human life span is more linear as described as the periods of development in the book we are reading. It is easy to see the different processes unfold within the various periods of development if you delineate the age categories or specific periods and patterns of change. Nature vs. Nurture- Nature refers to the position that our genetic inheritance is the primary influence on development. On the contrary, Nuture refers to the stance that experiences, parenting, education, learning, cultural influences is the primary influence for development. The saying ‘Nature vs. Nurture’ is a catchphrase and has been around forever. It is basically summed up as the virtual...

...Human development has been and would continue to be a very complex process; from birth to death. Human development spans a broad range of human endeavor that has attempted to understand why human beings to the things they do, grow the way they do, and the potential of human beings. There has been an ongoing debate whether human development is impacted by nature or nurture. If the growth of the individual were to be guided by nature, the individual would take the position that all or most of its behaviors and characteristics are the result of genetics inherited from their parents (Colella, 2013). Meaning that they were fully equipped with all the skills they need in their lives when they are born. On the other hand, if an individual’s growth were guided by nurture only, the individual would think and behave in a certain manner because that is how the individual was taught to do so or from experience (Colella, 2013). In this case the individual is also impacted by the environment surrounding them. Although nature has some impact on human development on an individual, nurture has a greater impact on an individual’s development. It has a bigger affect on human development due to early childhood experiences, acquired intelligences and socialization throughout their life. Early childhood is the most and rapid period of development in a human life. The experiences gained from birth to the four years of age are critical to the complete and healthy cognitive, emotional and physical...

...Crosswhite 1 Katie Crosswhite Professor Naramore Psychology 2314 01 October 2013 The Evolutionary Perspective Evolutionist believe that the human species are the results of billions of years of transition. That we have evolved from many mammal species to become the dominate character we are today. There are many theories that suggest this idea. Natural Selection and Adaptive Behavior One way to describe natural selection is the natural process to which the weaker biological traits die off leaving the best characteristic to be passed on to the next evolving offspring. The best adapted gene dominates and produces the stronger creatures most likely to reproduce. This idea was suggested my Charles Darwin (in 1859). Evolutionary Psychology The theories that evolutionary psychology are based on do originate with Charles Darwin's work, but David Buss incorporates the ideas that the psychological aspects rely on natural selection as well. Our selection of mates, behavior, our social skills , and many other functions are derived from the “survival of the fittest.” Evolutionary Psychology- A branch of psychology that emphasizes the importance of adoption, reproduction, and “survival of the fittest” in shaping behavior Evolutionary Developmental Psychology It is believed that there...
