The Navy Seals are without any doubt one of the most highest trained teams on the planet. Each Navy Seal is very unique because each one is a leader, teacher, focused, and very skilled in teaching others and learning. Navy Seals go through extensive training to become who they are today and they wouldn’t be half the person they are without their other fellow seals. “Getting your feet wet is the best way to learn how to swim,” says Jeff Cannon the author of the book. Seals teach others leadership by forcing their students to get in and getting their hands dirty.

Currently, there are hundreds of squads of Navy Seals doing work somewhere around the world. They work hundred- hour shifts, and most of the time they are under a lot of pressure to do their job. They are probably freezing and soaking wet. They usually can’t speak to their families and they don’t have any money with them. Despite all of these hardships, they develop a strong bond with their other peers, their boss, and all of their missions. The first lesson for a Navy Seal is to set their goals. In 1991 during the Gulf War, a Navy Seal developed a strategic plan that had the potential to affect the war. When Seals plan a mission, their flowcharts are so filled up with ideas that sometimes they look like trees. Their mission starts out as a strong, solid tree base, then it begins to split and branch out into every direction. Setting a realistic goal for your team is the first step to reach a goal that is worth wile and meaningful for you and others.

When setting a goal you always need to plan ahead and prepare for a new situation that has not yet been identified yet. To complete this the Seal organization goes beyond it’s training to help them learn first-aid, to training them how to dive and sink terrorist’s ships that haven’t been found yet. They continually position themselves so that incase of an emergency they can react and have a backup plan. To accomplish this, the Navy Seals embrace several principles of change that are likely to greatly affect the battlefield they are fighting on. They rely on chaos, technological advancements, and anticipation and will this they create foolproof strategies. Navy Seals solve this through practice. Current students scream out when there is an ambush, they scream and yell in the morning before getting wet and sandy, they scream out that missiles are inbound, they scream out for all of the soldiers to get their weapons on line at once during a firefight. This is called practical application, this technique continues throughout all of the training. Why you may ask? Because getting your feet wet is the best way to learn how to swim. They tech you in class training in dive physics is soon followed by construction of a depth profile that you’ll swim that night. Medical instruction is followed by sticking an IV needle in your teammate’s vein to practice giving him plasma. A class on shooting tactics is followed by long hours on the range. Platoon leaders can talk circles about how to construct a shape charge out of plastic explosive. Although, it’s not until you actually begin cutting and measuring things that you really learn how to blow a hole in the side of a tank’s armor plating and know exactly what it will do on the other side.

The second major part of a Navy Seal is being organized. As apart of being a Navy Seal they each have to choose a structure that is based directly on their mission. In a Seal platoon, the platoon commander is in charge. He controls two squads when in the field, one is run by his assistant and the other is run by him. Within those squads it is even more organized down to specific tasks each person must complete. This strategy is called The Pyramid. The advantage of this strategy is very effective and they have to make immediate decisions while they are under fire. Although, sometimes to become very organized this strategy can have a downside. Additional time is sometimes needed to think of a future move that the Seals will have to make in the battlefield. To prevent this and stay organized, they all have to communicate with each other constantly or else someone could get left behind. The chain of command rotates through different Seals, depending on what is currently happening. With this strategy they can stay organized very easily because each commander can accept the ideas of the others and rotate and each person will donate their strategies which helps with their mission and sometimes their battle.

The hardest skill to learn as a Seal is to become a leader and to learn leadership. It is important to remember to forget the group concept and remember that to be a successful leader a boss needs to step up and lead the team. This skill makes a good leader because if everyone was leading who would be the true leader? You should always choose your option while the choice is yours. The choices you make effects others and you might miss out on a good opportunity if you take too long. By hesitating, you’re deciding to take that decision and put it into someone else’s hands which means that you ultimately loose. To fix this, decide what you want and go after it, you will make the right choice if you put your mind to it. Point your team in the direction they should be in and make executive decisions. You will surely become a successful leader.

The next part is called “The Thundering Heard.” As becoming a Navy Seal you have to remember that nobody is forcing you to be here. When Seals are trained, their teachers don’t have to fire the Seals they just quit on their own. During basic training, students usually have to go through tough conditions that will show what they will have to go through on an actual mission. They experience bad weather, no sleep, sickness and many emotions. This causes a lot of students in training to actually figure out and think if they want to possibly become a leader and also a Navy Seal. It’s the people who are giving up their time, and waiting for the right opportunity. Those fellow people are known as “The
Thundering Heard.” To help with making the right decision, the leaders or bosses look for particular aspects that the Navy Seal might not be good at. Instructors will make it their mission to stress the Seal out but at the same time make them focus. The instructors will pound the missions into your brain in which scenarios are based on weather you live or die and weather your peers help you out. They also teach that if you’re new, you probably won’t be on board with your team, so as a lesson learned; if you aren’t happy with your job go out and get a new one and take control of your life. Take the opportunity to leave and build your career the way you want it to look like.

The final part of becoming a Navy Seal and to be a leader is becoming a hero. Being a good leader is tough. You have to perform at higher levels than your coworker, teammates, and your competitors. The greatest problem that you will face is increasing the standards that you have now to what you will have later in the future. You will have to enforce higher working standards and make a lot of hardships. You will have to play a villain role to make sure that you become a successful person. You need to make a successful team to back you up when needed. Navy Seals have to find a guy who can be firm with the others while you are out doing your own thing. When you have developed all of the skills and assets you need, you will become a hero to all including yourself.

As learned in the book I have read, Navy Seals require a lot of work. Throughout all of the lessons taught in the book, the most important one was leadership. I picked leadership as the most important topic because in big groups, such as the Seals; you don’t have anything if you don’t have a main leader. It may take a lot to accomplish teamwork but if you have a successful person who will take the lead and take care of the team you will not fail. I also learned through the book it takes a lot if a person is trying to become a hero to others. One simple act can make a whole difrence in something or in certain cases, someone’s own life. You should always strive to do and to try your best, even in the hardest conditions because the Navy seals always strive to do theirs.
