From the people like the office assistants who did a lot of the scheduling of games, marketing and halftime entertainment, to the concession stand companies and workers, bar owners (who hosted watch parties), the thousands of security guards and ushering staff members that worked and staffed the arenas, the problems trickled down and caused issues and unemployment problems for many people we may not have even though about. In retrospect, the lockout affected a lot more than the players and owners that we have seen on television, it lasted so long that its affect also caused havoc and mayhem in the lives of so many working class folks, that it even forced some to seek part-time or other employment to make ends meet in their households. The players were fighting to protect what they already had, while the owners tried to protect their investments in each franchise. If you own a television chances are high that you probably were aware of the recent lockout of players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). There were many complex issues surrounding both sides regarding this situation which I will get into during the course of this paper. The main goal of both the owners and the players was to come to agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement. The previous collective bargaining agreement expired in June of 2011. The 2011-2012 NBA season, was in jeopardy if a new agreement was not able to be reached. After hours of negotiations and back and forth momentum changes from each side, an agreement was finally reached on November 25, 2011, saving the season and allowing thousands of people to return to work. The NBA lockout has many twists and turns since July 1st 2011. The players and the owners of the teams have many decisions to make. This article focuses on the efforts of the International Longshore Workers Union to reach an agreement with the Pacific Maritime Association. The two groups are attempting to iron out details for about 13,500 port workers to increase salaries, improve healthcare, and pension plans. These 13,500 workers span across the pacific coast, covering about 29 ports which serve as primary shipping ports between the United States and Asia. 70% of the United States’ imports and exports with Asia are serviced using the affected ports. The article notes that since negotiations begin, workers have gone on strike, cutting down the amount of hours worked each week. This cut back in labor has caused delays at the ports reducing the amount of goods being imported and exported. The military has been using simulations to train soldiers for a while and now they are using video games to train soldiers. Another key difference is that simulations tend to be more realistic then videogames. Proflight Simulator is a video game that you can play online with others but learn how to fly at the same.
