...NDAS Case Study – PART 1 Read the following case study and answer the following questions. 1. Briefly describe the current state of NDAS’s office automation, system integration, and networking. Begin by explaining how each department uses information technology, what hardware it uses, and what functions currently are automated. Also assess which department is most in need of a network. [5 marks] The level of automation varies significantly among the NDAS departments and offices. In addition, NDAS is in the process of downsizing to achieve a more cost-effective computer support system. For example, the Sales and Marketing Division has a desktop computer for each of the account representatives. All of these computers are connected to a small local area network (LAN) that serves only the Sales and Marketing Division. The Accounts Receivable Division recently downsized its minicomputer to a powerful desktop computer with a faster processor, motor memory and increased disk storage space. This new desktop supports databases for both customer billing and “bad dept” expenses. The Accounts Payable Division has an older minicomputer and is in the process of downsizing to a modern powerful desktop computer. It has its own vendor database that includes invoices received by NDAS from other carries stored on the older minicomputer. Fleet Maintenance prefers to process all its information manually; however, this area is being considered for automation. None of the departmental...

...PM Page 1 C A S E S T U DY NEXT-DAY AIR SERVICE This is the beginning of a cumulative case study about a fictitious firm we call Next-Day Air Service (NDAS). The case study begins here in Chapter 1 and continues throughout the rest of the book. It requires you to complete tasks that are related to topics covered in each corresponding chapter of the text. The end of each chapter contains the case narrative, related figures, and a set of questions and problems. These do not have one unique solution. There are too many alternatives when dealing with LANs, WANs, MANs, BNs, and the Internet, so a reallife network design and development problem can have several workable answers. As with any real-life problem with ambiguities or unresolved considerations, you must make your own assumptions. Feel free to read ahead or use the index to find related subjects that support your recommendations. Your instructor may provide additional guidelines regarding report formats, Web and library resources, key assumptions, and the like for the various questions and problems presented in this case study. Be sure to provide adequate justification for any recommendations you make. (NDAS) was founded in 1985 to compete in the expanding market for overnight package deliveries. NDAS provides local pickup and delivery of these parcels and other small freight items. The founders initially restricted their efforts to the rapidly growing central Florida region. To support its operation, NDAS purchased a...

...Pre-course Assignment – NDAS Case Study Question 1 The current level of office automation at NDAS varies with each department. The company is also in the process of upgrading its computer systems to improve performance and reduce costs. The Payroll Department has a minicomputer on which it runs the payroll twice monthly. The Sales and Marketing department has a desktop computer for each account representative. All the computers are connected to a LAN, which serves only the Sales and Marketing department. The Accounts Receivable Division has recently replaced its old minicomputer with a more powerful microcomputer. This new server supports databases for both customer billing and bad debts. The Accounts Payable Division maintains its vendor database on an older minicomputer. It is in the process of downsizing to a powerful desktop server. The vendor database contains billing information of NDAS and ODI. The Accounts Payable Division is also responsible for payroll. Employees in Accounts Receivable and Payable divisions have PCs on their desks. The Fleet Maintenance Division has no computers and processes all its information manually. The Dispatch department, which is part of Fleet Maintenance, also processes its work manually. This division is responsible for bundling incoming packages and preparing them for overnight delivery. The Dispatch department is most in need of a network. The various branches and agents of NDAS are located far apart - there may be delays...

...APM Project Management Awards WINNER’S CASE STUDY Category Winner Programme of the Year 2014 Wylfa extended generation programme, Magnox Ltd Sponsor Overview Standing on the coast of Anglesey, North Wales, the Wylfa nuclear reactor began generating in 1971. Over 40 years and four extensions to its original life expectancy of 25 years later, it is still producing electricity. It is the largest of the 10 nuclear sites managed by Magnox on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). In 1996, it was deemed that Wylfa could safely generate for a further 10 years. In 2006 the NDA announced that the station would be shut down in 2010, but in 2010 it was given an extension to 2012. Wylfa then worked on a further project allowing generation to continue until December 2015. Generation beyond that date is constrained by the re-processing of fuel at Sellafield. Today, Wylfa has only one running reactor and two operational turbine generators, but with an output of around 460MW still supplies more than 20 per cent of Wales’ electricity needs. This has been possible because of an idea during a brainstorming meeting that developed into the innovative and ground breaking Extended Generation Programme. 1 APM Project Management Awards WINNER’S CASE STUDY Objectives In 2008, Wylfa had begun the transition process of moving towards shutting down and removal of fuel in 2010. From this arose the idea which grew into...

...companies have to estimate numbers (such as expense) based on their assumptions for the future, but the problem is that GAAP doesn’t have clear boundary to define what is a normal estimation (legal) and what is an extreme estimation (illegal). Therefore as long as the manager has logically explaining of those assumptions, then their estimation is legal. By definition, earning is the sum of operating cash flow and non-cash earning (accruals). Thus, if a manager wants to manipulate a firm’s earning, he can do it in either way( or both), however the manipulation of operating cash flow involve the real transaction which is far more difficult to execute, therefore earnings management has been conducted by manipulating accruals in most of the case. Mangers management earning for different reasons, for the firm specific, companies might smooth earning and earnings growth to increase the...

...Taylor Motivation By Who – Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1917) Frederick Winslow Taylor is a controversial figure in management history. His innovations in industrial engineering, particularly in time and motion studies, paid off in dramatic improvements in productivity. At the same time, he has been credited with destroying the soul of work, of dehumanizing factories, making men into automatons Mr. Taylor was born at Germantown, Philadelphia, on March 20, 1856, and was graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1883. He won the doubles championship of the United States at tennis at Newport in 1881. He entered the employ of the Midvale Steel Company at Philadelphia in 1878 and was successively gang boss, assistant foreman, foreman of the machine shop, master mechanic, chief draughtsman, and chief engineer. In 1889 he began his special work of reorganizing the management of manufacturing establishments. A plant that he made over was made over from top to bottom. He laid out the system from the duties of the boy who carried drinking water to the unskilled laborers to the duties of the President, giving his solution to the problems of shop, office, accounting department and sales department, and emphasizing the necessity for the humane treatment of labor. Some of the big shops into which he introduced his theories of scientific management are the Bethlehem Steel Company, Cramp's Shipbuilding Company, and the Midvale Steel Company. ...priority drugs. Patients, more than pharmaceutical firms, shape the political costs to the FDA of delaying drug approval. Consider two hypothetical consumers, one a pharmaceutical consumer (“patient”) who wishes to try a new drug for some ailment, the other a vitamin consumer who wishes to take zinc supplements to ward off a cold or flu. There are few institutional restrictions upon the consumption decisions of the vitamin consumer, at least in the United States. She is free to purchase vitamin products over the counter, and the vitamin manufacturer is free to sell them without prior authorization or licensing. Not so with pharmaceuticals. The marketplace for pharmaceuticals is one of the most highly regulated industries in the U.S. economy.1 To use any new pharmaceutical product, the patient must secure the approval of two agents: a licensed physician and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).2 No discussion of the past, present, or future of the pharmaceutical industry can ignore the critical role played by the FDA in its evolution. The agency’s drug review decisions are essentially final (contesting them is extremely difficult and costly) and immensely consequential (regulators in other...

We would also like to offer our sincere gratitude to the anonymous retailer and big data analytics company that provided so much time and insight concerning their experiences with monetization of big data. 1 Corresponding Author 1 Data Monetization: A Retailer’s Journey The ability to monetize a company’s data has been an elusive goal. However, in the era of big data, business intelligence and analytics, and cloud computing, this goal is becoming more achievable. The retail industry, with its exacting merchandising strategies and tight supply chain relationships, has taken the lead in demonstrating that monetizing data can provide a significant revenue stream and be an IT cost sharing mechanism. Point of sale, consumer loyalty, and inventory data can be sold to suppliers and some of the cost of analyzing the retailers' data can be recovered from their suppliers. This case study outlines the path one retailer followed in monetizing its data,...

...Kayla Shelton Professor Lodge UNIV 200 14 April 2011 Ensuring Consumer Safety: Toward Redefining the U.S. Food and Drug Administration The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of foods, medical devices, and prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications). The FDA regulates and supervises medical devices and drugs throughout their development, manufacturing, process of approval, marketing, and post marketing stages. When a drug or medical device is granted approval by the FDA, it will shortly become marketed in the United States and available for public use. The FDA responsibility during this post marketing stage consists of ensuring product safety and efficacy through continued research and testing of the product. If the FDA discovers safety or efficacy problems with the medical device or drug, they are also responsible for removing the product off the market and informing the public of their findings. The FDA is a very powerful United States government agency, who plays a crucial role in American citizen’s health and well-being. Through their legal authority established by the United States government, the FDA is chiefly responsible for ensuring the American public’s health and safety in the foods we eat, to the medicines we take to cure a common cold, to the treatment choices...
