...Martin Luther King, Jr wrote a one of time’s most memorable, yet powerful speech that touched American citizens all around the world and helped open their eyes to what could be a “perfect world.” He delivered the speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., where nearly a quarter of a million people gathered around to hear him voice his opinion. During this time, he was considered a brave man, for he was black and racism was so harsh on the black community. Knowing this risk, he took a stand for the colored citizens. He became the most predominant leader in the Civil Rights Movements. Many hours of research and preparation went into the making of this speech. Martin Luther King, Jr designed his speech to leave an impact on people that would allow them to remember it. For example King states, “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.” Carefully choosing his words, he...

Adolf Hitler is considered to be perhaps the most villainous man of the twentieth century. His vile and ruthless deeds are common knowledge. In fact, the name Hitler has now become synonymous with evil. What many often forget, however, is that Hitler was not only a coldblooded tyrant but that also a brilliant persuader of men. He personally oversaw the deaths of millions of people, including the near extermination of the Jewish race while maintaining the full support of the German people. The entire German population was certainly not as heartless and cruel as Hitler was, so it stands to reason that Hitler must have been a masterful propagandist in order to persuade the Germans that his policies were necessary and just. However, one must remember that Hitler was not born the cruel, vicious tyrant that he became. His life was governed by both his choices and his life experiences, so it is important to examine these along with his persuasive method to gain a comprehensive understanding of why he used his gift of persuasion in the way that he did. As an early teen, he had an interest in German nationalism and strongly admired a powerful politician Lueger. Alike Hitler’s great speaking skills later in life, Lueger knew how to use propaganda effectively to gain popular appeal. After moving to Vienna to pursue his art career, Hitler became depressed upon failing the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna’s entrance exam and having his mother diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1914 Hitler was drafted as a dispatch runner in World War I. His job was to take messages back and forth from the command staff in the rear to the fighting units near the battlefield, although Hitler...

...The Two Great Speeches Throughout history many speeches have astonished humanity, two specifically, are very much alike and served the same purpose yet they occurred at different times in history. Pericles’ Funeral Oration, which happened between 431-404 BC, and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, which took place on November 19 1863, share several common aspects. Both speeches pertained to honor the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War and the United States Civil War. Due to the fact that both Pericles and Lincoln were politicians we can infer that they were experts in getting their point across to the masses. Pericles’ Funeral Oration happened thousands of years before Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, however the fact that both of them were meant to redefine war and its purpose made them very comparable. There is a reason these two speeches can be compared; by looking at the bigger picture, analyzing the similarities, and meaning of the dialogue it can be said the speeches were intended to portray both wars as a necessary method to reestablish the pillars for which each nation and/or city was founded upon. Both of these speeches are without a doubt, an important piece of history, as they tell the story of the aftermath of the battles that had taken place and the ones that were yet to come. The Funeral Oration by Pericles displays the difference those who had died in the battles made and how much Athenians valued them, enough to publicly honor them. According to...

...acknowledged as iambic pentameters and are based on a pattern of five pairs of syllables, each pair being made up of an unstressed followed by a stressed syllable. An example of this verse is; ‘For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne’er bile,’ (IV.3.61-2) This is the fundamental pattern however Shakespeare does not stick severely to this as it would become obvious and monotonous. Occasionally he uses a pair of rhyming lines; this is recognized as a rhyming couplet. This feature is often used to mark and signal the end of a scene. We consider prose to be our everyday speech. This can fluctuate a great deal. When Henry is in disguise and is speaking to the soldiers, he talks in prose but still it is rich and well-structured. Fluellen speaks in humorous version of Welsh-English, using stock phrases like ‘look you’ (for example III.2.100). His speech is further contrived by his selection of vocabulary and his wish to deliberate military theory. Macmorris and Davy also speak in humorous versions of their dialects....

...had to spare, causing major setbacks because a national banking system of 729 banks was not yet established. These banks came into being from 1863-1866. This caused major hurdles because no reliable national banking system existed, it caused setbacks for the future. Second, the Fugitive Slave Act created significant issues because the Southern slave catchers were allowed to take free black people and take them back to the South to enslave them. It also made it a crime if Northerners did not turn the fugitives into the slave hunters. This significantly increased the tensions and anger between the North and the South and became the engine which contributed to the Civil War. Third, it indirectly caused the author Harriet Stowe to write her persuasive book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” which so inflamed many people in the North that they became committed abolitionists. Finally, it caused abolitionists to rise to action. While The Compromise of 1850 didn't cause the Civil War directly, it was the incubator. In the end, abolitionists especially hated the outcome of the Compromise because of the Fugitive Slave Act. (civilwar.org, pg 1-13, staff; Owlcation.com, staff, nber.org, pg 1,...

...totally different religions, their founders lived quite similar lives and each revolutionized their religions in a most profound way. The Prophets, Jesus, and Muhammad, led followers on a path of righteous living and even after death, they continue to influence people’s lives across the world. The following chronicles the birth, lives, ministries, deaths, and the impact each of these prophets have made on society, and religion in the world. Sometime near the first year of the Common Era, the angel Gabriel came to a woman named Mary and spoke to her, telling her she would conceive a son and his name would be Jesus. Jesus would come to known as the Messiah, the son of God. Jesus grew up in the small town of Nazareth with his mother and father, Joseph. His father was a carpenter and many times his family traveled to Jerusalem to sell crafts in the marketplace. It was on these trips that Jesus saw the struggles of the Jewish people; he saw the ways the poor people were treated, as well as, the extravagances of the Romans occupying Judea. After witnessing a prophet, John the Baptist telling stories of a new faith and the kingdom of God, he was baptized in the Jordan River. John had many followers and this angered the Roman leaders bringing about his death. This was the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus taught his people that they needed to give up their material possession and believe that God would provide for their needs. He told the Jews the way to salvation was through surrender...

...I have often wished myself a beast. I prefer the condition of the meanest reptile to my own. Anything, no matter what, to get rid of thinking!” (Douglass 35). From just reading the excerpt, the tone of his writing is to be described as having a sense of anger and despair. He’s letting his audience know what he feels about the situations that he’s been through and to make them understand the conditions that he had to go through from his perspective, with hard evidence stating back to just centuries ago when the U.S. was being formed. And even then, he makes an account to his audience with a consciousness that the world is out of near perfect and again, he uses his experiences and aspiring tone to justify just that. It’s hard for a person to live a life that they never wanted, a life of being too different from society that they can’t be a part of. Instead, they’re just treated like things, the garbage that’s seen on the streets, knowing that they’re never going to be treated the same just because of the way they look. That their imperfections and flaws make them entirely different from how a person who’s part of the majority...

...life, and psychological issues create an environment that causes students to experience extreme stress. Providing tips and advice on how to deal with stress could potentially help solve the problem of stress on Purdue University campus. INTRODUCTION: Attention Getter: Palo Alto, California is home to one of the most prestigious and competitive school districts in the country, which is located near Stanford University. The school district is made up of twelve primary schools, three middle schools and two high schools. Since 2009, there have been 4 reported student suicides due to the intense school environment and rigorous workload. The domino effect of suicides started in particular with high schooler Jean-Paul Blanchard. Jean-Paul was known for his kindness, compassion, and social skills. He worked hard to keep a balance between school work, his social life, and mental health but it became too much for him to handle. He needed a break and had trouble finding a proper escape, which caused him to jump in front of a fast moving train and take his own life. Soon after Jean-Paul’s death, three others took the same escape he did and killed themselves. Students state, “You feel this sense that you’re not as good as everyone else or you’re not good enough for whatever reason-because you can’t get into a certain college or just because your test scores are not as high as someone else’s. You kind of feel you...

...the century Britain was at war with Napoleonic France. In 1806, Napoleon issued the Berlin Decree forbidding any country under his control from trading with Britain. In the following year, the British issued Orders in Council, granting the right to seize neutral shipping bound for French controlled ports. This decision led to a war with the USA (1812-1814). In 1815, the Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) defeated Napoleon at Waterloo near Brussels, and after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Britain became the greatest and richest power in Europe. The British controlled world trade. In the 19th century the population of Britain increased rapidly. By 1815 it had reached 13 million and London was one of the largest cities in Europe (1 million inhabitants). By 1850 half the population lived in towns and London had more than 2 million inhabitants. Between 1750 and 1850 the population of Britain increased threefold. Victoria, daughter of the Duke of Kent, a younger son of King George III, succeeded her uncle, William IV, in 1837. Her reign lasted until her death in 1901, and it was marked by a steady growth of national wealth and expansion of the empire. Britain held the unchallenged position of world economic and political leadership. A popular saying of the time was that the sun never set on the British Empire, which was so vast. In the 19th century the empire included India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, large parts of Africa, and many smaller territories. In the second half of the...

...Shakespeare’s Characters: Self-Gratification Over Human Kindness William Shakespeare wrote in his tragedy, Julius Caesar, “The evil, that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones.” It is shown that Shakespeare’s lead characters are concerned with their need for self-satisfaction, gratitude, and dignity. They lack the solicitude for human kindness and the thought of others. The more the audience analyzes the characters, the more they see the true ambition and reasoning for their evil deeds. During Shakespeare’s time, it wasn’t unusual for men to seek such power. For instance, Taming of the Shrew is a play that focuses on the desire for marriage; but the emotions of young couples were not the main consideration in courtship (McDonald 267). Katherina actions portray her as the shrew, but the audience knows her ultimate desire was to receive genuine love from a man. Richard III makes it abundantly clear that he desires to take over the English thrown and do whatever it takes to grasp it. Additionally, Hamlet seeks revenge and is motivated to do so by his supernatural spirit of his father (Sobran 45). The need for wealth, power, ambition, and greed lead many of Shakespeare’s characters to satisfy their own self gratitude over the basic ideas of human kindness. London, during the sixteenth century, was a time of extreme corruption. Gender roles were unequal, marriage was spurious, and seeking wealth or power of some sort became every man’s objective. The...
