...Why Smoking Cigarettes Should Be Considered a Drug Mathew Wright ECPI University Why Smoking Should Be Considered a Drug Smoking cigarettes was once viewed as fashionable throughout the majority of the last century. Smoking was glamorized with beautiful woman though history. The most iconic is Marilyn Monroe. Others such as the Marlboro man who was a handsome cowboy on his steed, and I still haven’t forgotten the smooth stylish camel that could bring the cool to any party. Those times are long behind us now as we have become aware of the significant risks in smoking cigarettes. With nearly twenty percent of the United States’ population currently smoking, it is clear that this recreational habit has become an epidemic (American Cancer Society, 2011). However, I believe that even with mandated health risks printed on packages, countless numbers of anti-smoking ads on billboards, and the spamming of our television sets since 1998, individuals still refuse to kick the habit. With cigarettes being extremely addictive and the majority of smokers are not considerate to others, I believe cigarettes should be considered a drug. I hope discussing these three negative effects of cigarette smoking will help to re-evaluate a person’s stance on this completely legal drug; realizing that smoking is a bad decision for everyone. Besides the obvious possibility of death, one should be concerned with the likelihood of lung cancer, a diminished physical appearance, and the inadvertent...

...In China, should smoking in public places be prohibited? In recent decades, the number of the smoker in China has increased significantly, and the issue of whether smoking in public places should be banned or not has been widely argued. The term ‘smoking in public places’ refers to the phenomenon of having a cigarette in the area where many people gather. This essay will argue that smoking in public places should be prohibited. The reasons for this include the health issues caused by smoking, negative effect on public environment and the related safety problem. It is argued that the main negative aspect of smoking in public places is the extremely harmful influence on health. For the smokers, their lungs and throats can be damaged seriously. Moreover, the incidence of cancers, especially lung cancer and laryngeal cancer, to the large extent is increasing because of smoking. Additionally, smoking in public area will also affect other people’s health. The harmful chemicals contained in the second hand smoke may cause a series of disease, such as heart disease and respiratory disease. Undoubtedly, banning smoking will make a large difference on these related health problems. Another reason to prohibit smoking in public places is its negative impact on the environment. Firstly, plants can be poisoned by the harmful chemicals released by smokers. In addition, the smoke also contains a large amount of particles, which adds greatly to the air pollution. Thirdly, during the production...

...Identify that market failure, and illustrate the failure using an appropriate diagram. Ans. Cigarettes represents a market failure of externatilities. They are sited as negative externality as they affect the wellbeing of the bystander and the person neither pays nor receives any compensation for that negative effect. A smoker enjoys the puff of the smoke and the bystander inhales the fumes of the cigarette and indirectly suffers health hazards. And if the bystander fells sick because of the smoke as one reason he will not be compensated by the smoker for the ill- health and therefore, smoking has a negative impact on a person who has not paid for the cigarette and still has suffered a loss. This reduces the MSB by the extent of the negative effect on bystander; hence the socially efficient smoking is less than the free market level of smoking. A Negative Externality in Consumption can be analyzed by a decrease in the marginal social benefit of consumption below the marginal benefit to consumers. (If a smoker benefits $8.20 and non-smokers lose $4.00, then society as a whole benefits $4.20) S = MC D = MB 0 5,000 10,000 15,000 E Price of a pack of cigarettes Quantity of cigarettes $14 12 10 8 6 4 2 MSB MSB curve shifts downward by the amount of the externality --- the marginal external effect Q 2. Many economists believe that a Pigovian tax is the most efficient mechanism for offsetting this market failure. Explain what is meant by the term ‘Pigovian...

...can do more damage to your body then I was aware of. I felt like smoking should be completely banned in public places but after researching this assignment I changed my view. I changed and said it should be banned in some places rather then all public locations. The difficulties I encounter with this essay were over citing my sources. I had a hard time putting my own words into my paper with out thinking it was plagiarism. On the opposing view section of my paper I had over citied and going back to add my common knowledge in that section was difficult. I enjoyed learning new history and information on this assignment. I also enjoyed reading what the opposing side said about banning smoking in public places. I choose to write about this topic because it hits close to home. I have an aunt and an uncle who had passed away due to the effect of smoking. I have a husband who also smokes and the doctor constantly tells him he needs to quit. I always wondered why people would take on such a nasty habit that is not only killing them but the people around them. This assignment helped me realized that people are going to do what they want to do weather it’s health or not. Sincerely, According to tobaccotruth.com the office on Smoking and Health at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) counted 45.3 million American smokers. (Rodu) Smoking...

...The Success of Smoking Cessation for Patients of Schizophrenia In Relation to Age Alex B. Dvorak University of San Francisco The Success of Smoking Cessation for Patients of Schizophrenia Based on Age Cigarette smoking is the most abused form of preventable death, counting for almost half a million deaths in the United States annually (Center for Disease Control, 2015). More startling is the prevalence of smoking among people with Schizophrenia; an estimated 53% smoke tobacco (Evins et al., 2014). This rate is up to 5 times higher than the general population, causing an increase in smoking-related death (e.g., Addington, 1998; Dutra, Stoeckel, Carlini, Pizzagalli, & Evins, 2012; Pachas et al., 2013; Zammit et al., 2003). ...I am under pressure”. They smoke everytime, everywhere and can not give up smoking. Without holding a cigarette, they will feel uncomfortable like loosing a best friend. They think that smoking is a good leisure activity and somehow can also be good for their health. However, other people think that smoking should be banned due to its negative effects. Opponents of banning smoking claim that smoking undoubtedly helps them to relax, for some people, it even improve their concentration. However, a large number of research studies show that smoking increases people’s likelihood of developing certain diseases (compared with people who have never smoked) and causes earlier death. Thus, if people never began smoking, the prevalence of those smoking-attributable diseases would decline, and life expectancy would increase. The medical research also finds that ceasing to smoke improves health. The risks of many smoking-attributable diseases decline after quitting, although a smoker does not have the same health as someone who has never smoked. Opponents also maintain that smoking is the smokers choice, and they will pay for their health problems. However, such an argument ignores the fact that there are many people around them when they are smoking. Studies show that secondhand smoke—the inhalation of smoke by someone other than the smoker, sometimes referred to as environmental tobacco smoke or passive smoking—has also been linked to a number of illnesses. Among newborn and children,...

...Introduction Smoking is one of the biggest health problems seen throughout the United States. It is estimated that cigarette smoking contributes to around 450,000 deaths every year and cost the U.S. $193 billion annually in direct medical expenses and lost productivity (Porter 2013). Cigarette smoking is an addictive habit and for the majority of smokers is very hard to quit, especially by themselves. It is difficult if one is a non-smoker to grasp and understand the dynamics of the addiction and successful quitting usually requires a significant amount of assistance and support. Nurse practitioners are there to provide professional assistance by helping patients take the appropriate steps and measures to ensure their success in smoking cessation. Difficulty of Smoking Cessation In general, most people who smoke know smoking is bad for their health and can contribute to many other health problems and even death, so why can’t they just quit? If it were that easy there would be significantly less smokers in this country. The problem is not the desire to quit but rather the actual act of stoping smoking for good. The fact of reality is there are plenty of smokers out there who want to quit but just can’t due to the complexity and addictive nature of the habit. The three main components of tobacco smoke include; tar, carbon monoxide and nicotine (McEwen 2014). Most of the health issues that arise from smoking cigarettes are directly linked to tar and carbon monoxide components...

...Statistics Canada, they conducted a Canadian Community Health Survey – Mental Health (CCHS – MH) in 2012 that “12.2% of Canadians aged 15 or older (3.4 million) used marijuana in the past year” (Langlois and Rotermann). Over the years, smoking marijuana has become more and more of a ‘leisure activity’ amongst many young adolescents and teenagers. Whether or not society realizes, by participating, it has situated biased perceptions towards narcotics, strained their social relationships and triggered physiological effects on themselves. The majority of adolescents participate because of peer pressure. Regrettably, the innocent fifteen year old teen does not realize how detrimental smoking marijuana is after it is done once. Whereas, adults smoke marijuana because they are not able to escape their addiction therefore they partake in smoking marijuana to escape their reality. Prohibiting marijuana is a detrimental to their mental abilities, their health and the government. The prolonged misconception that smoking marijuana carries little to none health effects has been proven wrong by many doctors, scientists and researchers. Many users and pro-marijuana movements are under the impression that marijuana is not an addictive drug. After committing to smoking marijuana for the first time, the addiction is let off its leash. Recent studies has proven that marijuana is in fact and addictive drug. An...

...SMOKING BAN – OHIO STATE LAW As early as the days of Christopher Columbus accidentally mistaking our beautiful country, the United States of America, for our Eastern hemisphere friends India; there has been a major agricultural product whose historical prominence still exists to this very day. That product is the tobacco plant. Early settlers of our great nation grew and brought this very plant from various parts of the world. Little did they know that the tobacco plant would eventually be rolled into a piece of filter paper, added to other harmful substances, and turn into one of the largest health addictions mankind has ever faced. It was not until the two World Wars of the 20th century, where the fad of cigarette smoking skyrocketed (“The History of Smoking”). During the period of the World Wars, medical research was still in its infancy stages and no corollary was established between cigarette smoking and its adverse health effects. It was not until 1964, when the United States Surgeon General stated that cigarette smoking was directly linked to lung cancer (“The History of Smoking”). This is when the government decided it was the best to intervene since the safety of its citizens was at stake. In today’s day and age, cigarette companies have expanded in various different markets and are a part of a multi-billion dollar industry. Unfortunately even with all the technological advances and modern day medical practices that mankind has discovered, cigarette smoking is still...

We managed to get a total of 50 participants in which 60% were non-smokers and 40% were smokers. The questions regarding smoking facts were answered by both sides. Both smokers and non-smokers seem to have just a slight understanding on what smoking really does to the body and to those around them. Based on the findings, we recommend that students be exposed to the real dangers of smoking. We suggest exhibitions, competitions, talks or maybe even a health class. ...Smoking For several decades, smoking remains one of the most common problems in the world even though people are aware of the health risks involved in smoking. Smoking causes harmful effects in the body. There have been numerous reports linking cigarette smoking to diseases such as cancers of the lung, mouth, heart attacks, and other ailments. Moreover, smoking in public areas is an unhealthy habit because it harms not just the smokers, but also others who breathe the smoker’s cigarette smoke, that called secondhand smoke or passive smoke. Most studies of the effects of smoking focus on the public health aspects. However, smoking also negatively impacts on society through environmental problems and economic problems. Therefore, Federal and State Government should ban smoking in public area. When thinking of disease caused by smoking, the first one that comes to mind is always lung cancer, but there are many other serious diseases that are associated with smoking. Smoking damages nearly every organ of the body and diminishes a person’s overall health. Most of the substances contained in tobacco smoke are harmful to the body such as: tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide. They are the major cause of cancer as well as the heart attack, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. Actually, in 2010, the Surgeon General at U.S Department reported that: “Smoking is a leading cause of cancer and death from cancer.
