Negative effects of the Internet Julia Tucker

Today’s teenagers use technology more than ever. Most of them have Internet access, which they use to send and receive email, instant messages, live chat, and more. Rarely do they stop to think about how harmful the Internet can be, such as exposure to pornography, identity theft, or cyber-bullying. Not only are they exposed to certain things but also the Internet affects a teenager’s social life, mental health and physical health.
Over usage of the Internet can quickly lead to internet addiction, which will ultimately give them less time for them to study, do homework, read, exercise, or participate in any co curriculum activities. As a result, internet addiction directly affected their day to day’s lifestyle and characteristic whom some are suppose to be inside the classroom yet they are wasting time surfing the Internet, watching pornography, or playing online games in the cyber world.
Today, due to popularity of social networking sites, teenagers are encouraged to post their profile on them because they want to be accepted by their peers. With putting up their profile, it helps them to meet and make friends with strangers. In turn, the stranger may be a predator who expose the teen to child pornography and encourage the teens to exchange pornography. In some cases the predator wants to go as far as to meet up with the teen.
All this heavy use of Internet by teenagers can greatly affect their mental health. Some teens might attempt to use the Internet as a way to escape from the real world or avoid personal contact. As a result, the more time they spent using the Internet, the less likely was their desire to see and talk to with family members and friends. Teenagers who grow up interacting online may find it harder to make friends in the real world and they became aloof, withdrawn and depressed. According to Staples, again, teenagers can actually “… lose friends, and experience symptoms of loneliness and depression, after joining discussion groups and other activities” and this causes teens to become emotionally empty and frustrated.
One of the most obvious problems with young generation using the Internet is the chance of getting addicted. Children and young adolescents that have grown up using computers will naturally be more vulnerable to getting hooked on the Internet. As a matter of fact, the young generation is spending more and more time in front of the monitor surfing Internet than they are getting their daily exercise. Because of this many medical problems such as obesity, eye health and postural problems can occur and affect the children’s health and social life. Such a pattern will eventually affect their grades, health, and social life. Moreover, Internet addiction disrupts teenagers’ relationships with family and friends and tends to replace education and other positive activities.
While the Internet opens a world of possibilities for the young generation, expanding their horizons and exposing them to different cultures and ways of life, they can be exposed to many dangers as they explore it.

Generation of Idiots

...“The Negative Effects of the Internet” is and interesting article written by Ryan Subong that talks about the positive and negatives effects of the internet. The internet has changed humanity no doubt about it. Some people might use it to learn new things that will positively further their knowledge, while others choose to commit frowned upon acts, and corrupt themselves. Pornographic material easily accessible to any curious child or teen with internet access can lead them down the path of corruption. Pornographic material and similar explicit content available on the internet tend to degrade humanity. Almost any song or movie you can think of can easily be pirated from the internet, making protecting copyright almost impossible. Albert Einstein once said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”, this quote is so precise, and it scares me. The internet is a great place for one to learn how to write an essay, but also the perfect place for someone to plagiarize someone else’s. Plagiarism and pirating copyrighted material cause very negative outcomes, this could ruin one’s reputation, or even worst, get them locked up in federal prison with 500,000 dollars bail (Pirating). P2P sharing sites like thepiratesbay, and kissasstorrents have successfully been taken down by the CIA, they are slowly cracking down on such websites while they remain lenient on the pornography websites corrupting our youth. With pornography...

Cyberbullying can be a problem as people can take advantage of the fact that there is no one who can effectively stop the bullying when it happens, due to everything being performed behind a screen. The only way for a bully to be stopped is if they are reported and victims may be too intimidated to do it. The Effect of Technology

...Technology’s effect on education Justin W. Campbell University of Maryland University College The effects of technology are evident in just about every area of our lives. Technology impacts the way we do our finances and how we receive our entertainment; however, one of the most impacted areas is that of education. Within education the effects of technology are seen in both positive and negative ways. On the positive side, technology has provided new and innovative tools that enhance the learning experience. On the negative side, technology has added a level of distraction and has opened up a new horizon in the realm of academic dishonesty. The impact of technology on education is a double edged sword that can benefit academia while also hurting academia in the same swing. Before the influx of technological advances, a student’s access to empirical research was limited to brick and mortar repositories of information, the library. When faced with a research project students needed to appropriately allocate their time resources in order to physically visit a traditional library, scour catalogues of reference data, transcribe their notes (in handwriting) and then return home to write their paper; all the while, hoping that they have all the information needed. Additionally students were at the mercy of their local library to have the timeliest resources available as many smaller libraries would be horribly outdated (McCoy, 2014). Now in the age of technology, students...
