...SSC190 Final Research Paper Extended Due Date: Aug. 5th, 2013 5. Pages 443, 445, text, social movements. Write about Facebook, other social networking sites and their impact on society.(good and bad) Throughout history we have gone through multiple revolutions, like the Agricultural Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and now the Knowledge or Information Revolution. But has the Knowledge Revolution paved the way for another revolution? It seems, more now than ever, that we are in a Communication Revolution. What with new communication technologies being created and released, almost habitually, our society finds it easier to communicate with the person of their choice at any time of the day, through whichever communicational means fits best, and no matter their location around the globe. That it is so is true, even more so now than ever through new social media sites, like Facebook. The focus of this paper identifies some of the capabilities that many of the most popular social media sites continuously update, along with the impact (both positive and negative) social media has had on society. Before the major technological advances in communication methods, people were able to contact one another either by phone or by mail. With such inventions like email, communication has only gotten faster and easier, as time goes by. Now, social networking sites continuously release updates that not only visually enhance the overall look of their website, but improve and even increase...

...Punks with cockscomb and full metal jackets My personal opinion on this case is that punks should be allowed to be punks. Each generation have its own style and way to live. You can’t deny the youth to be themselves; this would result in a new generation of country-loving nutcase’s adults. Which I think we already had one generation to many of right? If you want your guardians to allow you to express in whatever way you want. Ask them, challenge them, torture them until you get an answer how their parents reacted when they found out their children listened to Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors, Led zeppelin and so on. Their parents would scream shout tear their hair out cry over how their small angel children could be seduced by this devil music. And still your parents as the tiny evil creatures they are sneak away listen to the music they thought fit to them best. There loving helpful careful parents thought they kids had become mentally deranged. When they wore “cool” outfits and listened to “cool” music. And now maybe you will be allowed to listen to the music you want to listen to ;) Just ask they are not that evil sly monsters you think they are (or at least most of them have a tiny bit of goodness far down into the abyss of their heart). They might even remember how it was like to be a kid back in the stone ages. Just a bird that have lost its wings (Broken down angel by Nazareth) Red strings of the cotton maze of life. ...James Geren PHI 460: Leadership Priorities and Practices Elements of Organizational Management Ann Kitchen June 21, 2010 Elements of Management Organizational management has many different aspects that need to be discussed when trying to understand its complexity. It does not justify the concept of organizational management if you do not include the many different characteristics that make up the whole picture. In this paper I will try to shed some light on the concept as a whole while still trying to include my own personal beliefs about the system itself. It will cover aspects like the history of organizational management, methods used in the study, the framework that can make up the topic, and finally the theories that have been cast from years of trial and error studies. I will then close my research by talking about how organizational management affects current business and what I feel will be affected in the future. This will consist of some of my own personal experiences in the workforce and what methods I intend to implement when I become leader of a particular organization. “Organizational studies are generally considered to have begun as an academic discipline with the advent of scientific management in the 1890s, with Taylorism representing the peak of its movement. Proponents of scientific management held that rationalizing the organization with precise sets of instructions and time-motion studies would lead to...

...Group Comparison Paper Troy R. Witt The world is often a beautiful place. There are triumphant tales of kindred spirits helping those in need, of people coming together despite their differences, and of those once lost being found. However, there is another side of life that combats these positive stories with that of prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination, stigmas, and hate towards those who stand out or have unique attributes. Especially when compared to our culture of power that is often white, healthy, and traditional. The following will define, describe the treatment of, and perceive the lives of two of these stigmatized groups, those with obesity and those who are LGBT, to further detail the similarities and differences of their daily struggles. One clear, thematic, distinction is the blatant external identification of obese individuals against the hidden sexual stigma of those who are LGBT. Group Definition Weight stigma is a social stigma in which those who are overweight or obese are targets of prejudicial attitudes and discriminatory behaviors. This stigma is present across many dimensions in our society and can be seen in interpersonal, institutional, organizational, and cultural discrimination. Alarmingly, research has discerned the weight stigma has become more prevalent in our society, as weight based discrimination has increased 66% from the 1990’s into the 2000’s (Andreyeva, T., Puhl, R. M., & Brownell, K. D., 2008). Despite this group actually being a majority...

...The Impact of Information Communication Technology in Public and Private Life Today It is amazing how much communication and technology has changed in such a small time frame. Comparing the impact in people’s lives over the last decade is like comparing night and day. Our overwhelming dependence on technology is one of the largest changes seen in modern society. As recently as ten years ago, it was uncommon for a child in school to own a mobile phone now almost every child not only owns a mobile phone but laptops, game systems and I Pods. Television has advanced radically over the last fifty years we have gone from watching silent, black and white movies to satellite dishes with hundreds of channels. Through the development of television we have learned about our surrounding environment in brilliant colour and sound. Consequently we are also bombarded by news, politics and the terrible events that occur in real time, to the extent that we have become immune in our reactions to developments around world. The increasing amount of time spent watching television and surfing the internet takes up a large portion of free time in comparison to previous decades and the growth spent using this technology is attributed to the growing obesity problems in today’s society. We are much more dependent on amenities such as technology and fast food and this is contributing to an overall unhealthy lifestyle. Computers were one of the most amazing technological advances of our time...

...Phase 1 Individual Project Abnormal Psychology and the Workplace PSYC337-1204B-01 Professor Byers Jennifer Buchanan November 26, 2012 Abstract The definition of abnormality has gone through some significant changes through history. For centuries the causes of abnormal behavior has been debated. In ancient times supernatural explanations were offered to explain abnormal behavior, such as good vs. evil and displeasure of the gods. It was also believed that people who expressed behavior were considered to be possessed by an evil spirit. Then, in 460 B.C. Hippocrates, also known as the Father of medicine, proposed a biological explanation to the reasons behind abnormal behavior. He suggested that an imbalance of blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow pile was the cause of mental illness. Along came the Greeks with their diagnosis and treatment for hysteria, and years later in 1896 Sigmund Freud developed his systematic theory of psychodynamics he believed to be the psychological components of hysteria. During the 20th century behaviorism, humanistic/cultural/normative perspectives emerged, drastically changing the way abnormal behavior is viewed. In this paper I will discuss how these perspectives in detail. I will also discuss how the terms normal and abnormal and how these labels can affect the people they are placed on in the workplace and in life in general. Abnormal Psychology Abnormal psychology is a branch of psychology that studies people’s emotional, cognitive...

...Position Paper Introduction Looking back over the past two hundred and seven years, every session of the United States Senate has been opened with a prayer. Doing so has reaffirmed the Senates faith that God is the Sovereign Lord of our Nation. Barry C. Black currently serves as the spiritual advisor and counselor for the United States Senate with the title of Chaplin. Over the years, this position has ranged from part time, to now a full time position (United States Senate, 2011). Ever since Engel v. Vitale, people have been upset that God has been kicked out of the classroom. Engle v. Vitale was a landmark Supreme Court case, in which it was ruled that the public school could not be started or concluded with a formal reciting of a non-denominational prayer (Bill of Rights Institute, 2010). The following information will show both sides of the argument of if prayer should be allowed in schools. Background information will be given on the history of prayer in school and prayer in congress, and my personal thoughts on this important position. Argument There are many different viewpoints on the argument of prayer in schools. We will begin with the argument of allowing prayer in schools. The United States Constitution protects religious freedom under the First Amendment. The First Amendment states that Congress should not make any law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise of religion (U.S. Constitution Online, 2010)...

...Benefits, and FSU Traditionally, universities have taken stock of their faculty and class offerings by means of paper evaluations, typically administered during class towards the end of the term. This practice began in the 1920s and has been the standard since (Mau & Opengart 2012). However, during the last fifteen years universities have increasingly abandoned paper forms in favor of an online system, in which students complete course and faculty evaluations through a website, out of class and usually on their own time. The adoption rate among schools rose from 2% in 2000 to 33% in 2005, with the most common reasons cited being the cost and time savings (Guder & Malliaris 2013). Despite these potential benefits, many professors fear repercussions in the form of lowered response rates and biased scores. This paper aims to examine these concerns and also propose how a small school such as Fitchburg State University can implement online evaluations. First, I would like to briefly discuss why a school would want to switch to online evaluations. There are three primary reasons: online evaluations reduce paper costs (and postage for distance learning courses), which in turn is a way to “go green,” or be more environmentally friendly; online evaluations also saves many hundreds of hours across the various staff that have to prepare, print, scan, and analyze paper-based evaluations; and lastly, online evaluations do not take up valuable class time. As one UC Davis student complained...

...impact on the communication between the firms and customers. Internet helps people to share, to create, to adjust content, and to get informed. It has certain characteristics (Peterson et al., 1997) such as: * Stores vast amounts of information at different virtual locations inexpensively * Distributes, searches, and organizes the information powerfully and inexpensively * Serves as a transaction medium * Low cost and easy entrance * Serves as a physical distribution medium for certain goods such as software. Social media is different from traditional media as it provides quality, regularity, usability, proximity, and eternity, which makes it efficient for the firms. According to a report from the Center of Marketing Research (CMR), more large companies are using social media to promote their brand online (Belicove, 2012). The introduction of social media to the market has changed the way businesses operate and advertise. The largest mediums have been pages such as Facebook, Pinterest, FourSquare, Youtube, and Twitter. In 2012, the yearly report showed that large companies had increased the use of blogs by 5%, the use of Twitter by 11%, the use of Facebook by 8%, and 62% of the largest companies are using Youtube as marketing tool (Belicove, 2012). The use of social media has created a new form of consumer socialization and has a deep impact on consumer buying decision and on the market strategies. Many people who have a direct contact with the use of social...

...Reference Database: “Addiction” by Nancy A. Piotrowski, Ph.D Addiction is when the human body becomes dependent on a substance. Prolonged use of any psychoactive drug will determine a persons dependency. The addiction can affect a person psychologically and physiologically; this will show in an addicts tolerance and withdrawal symptoms from a drug. Tolerance will involve the biological system such as the human body, changes in the body after a drug is present, and environmental or behavioral conditioning. The way the human body processes a drug is by absorbing a drug through the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream it will be delivered to different organs and they will metabolize the drug and eliminate it from the body. After frequent use of a drug, the way the body processes a drug may change. When this occurs the body is able to rid itself of the drug more efficiently. This leads to reduced effects from the drug than when it was initially consumed. When this happens an increase to the dose will be required to get the desired effect. Many changes will occur in the body once a drug is present. It will change the sensitivity in specific areas of the body where the drug has an impact. For instance, there may be a direct or indirect impact on different areas of the brain. A direct impact may lead to a change in the brains receptors. When there is an indirect impact it will show in tissue tolerance and functional tolerance. Environmental and behavioral conditioning...

...Ethnic Themes Skylar Bandalan September 25, 2013 Instructor Solomon One point to remember when writing a comparative paper is that you have to know the material of whatever it is that is being paralleled. The theme I chose to write about is Race and Ethnicity. I am familiar with the theme and I also feel strongly about it which leads me to believe that I can do the topics justice. I chose What It’s Like to Be a Black Girl by Patricia Smith and Child of The Americas written by Aurora Levin Morales. These two authors may not share the same ethnicity; Smith being African American and Morales being Puerto Rican but they have experienced similar internal fights; cultural and personal identity struggles coupled with the need for social acceptance in their worlds. I also felt a personal connection with it seeing as how I am a mix of ethnicities, from Hawaiian, to Filipino, to Caucasian. In this comparative paper, I will discuss the similarities that both authors wrote about as well as the differences. When looking into the theme these two poems share, we can expand our understanding and in some way, reflect on it personally as I have. Both Smith and Morales explain so beautifully in their poems how difficult it was to grow up as young women who were not of Caucasian descent. They both lived completely different lives yet their struggles were comparable because they both suffered racial discrimination and in their writing explained how hard it was to live with what was decided...
