Culminating Project

In my third role-playing assignment, Morgan and I had the pleasure of sharing the role of Bill Fleming with the Department of Environmental Conservation. Our interests were to eliminate Riversides pollution of the Blue River without going to court. I will now give a critical review on the overall changes that I have made in my negotiation process and style.

I believe the negotiation went well. Working with a teammate on multiple issues presented different challenges, but we were able to accomplish our goal. My process for negotiation has changed drastically. I approached this negotiation with a lot of preparation focusing on interest, aspiration, reservation, and concessions. I focused on interests because it gave me the information I needed to set goals for the negotiation. I focused on aspirations because I wanted to find the best deal for the DEC. I focused on reservation because I needed to know my financial limits before going into the negotiation. Concessions were a huge part of my preparation because of the multiple issues. I listed 4 different groups of concessions in terms of financial impact to use when Riverside re-anchored and this helped tremendously. This gave me the confidence I needed to continue to create value instead of getting emotional and assuming the other party was a hard bargainer. Focusing on concessions also showed me the areas where I had the most flexibility to help both parties. As for my negotiation style I showed a lot of improvement. I took a more collaborative approach versus my usual win-lose approach and the results were successful. I took this approach because I wanted to put the DEC in a position to achieve their goals and not lead to my usual path of impasse. I was able to use this approach because I developed identification-based trust with the other party. I normally assume that the other party is

This article provides an excellent overview of negotiation techniques, avoiding impasses, and avoiding the pitfalls of hidden assumptions. This article is written for practitioners that conduct negotiations or plan to conduct negotiations in the future. The authors’ do not provide any reference to the academic literature (or any references at all). The portions of this article that cover negotiation techniques and avoiding impasses seem to provide a very thorough list of techniques, but the description of these techniques is generally limited to only one or two paragraphs. The portion of the article that describes avoiding the pitfalls of hidden assumptions is vague and lacking in substance. In addition, there is a glaring factual error in one of the examples provided by the authors, which may imply that there are other errors in this article. Despite these issues, Nierenberg and Calero (2009) have provided an excellent introductory overview of negotiation techniques and techniques to avoid impasses. This article is excellent reading for those that conduct negotiations in the performance of their job as well as those that are involved in negotiations for the myriad circumstances of day to day life. Cross cultural negotiations are complex and involve both personal and cultural – they have an impact on both perception of conflicts and the methods used to solve them.
