The article discusses the how of using social science research for the intended research for the existence of God. The author goes into detail using the scientific method for sociologic research. Yates states “in social science research it is considered scientific to collect data about the world, to build theories to explain the data and to test those theories against further data” (p. 2). Discussing every part of the scientific method, he gives examples for how he might go about with that that part of the method. Yates also discusses different approaches to the research. Phenomenology is discussed as a method for the study and possible explanation, but is left out. Instead the author decides on methodological triangulation because it allows differing methods of data collection regarding a social issue. The reason why this would be the best method as well as its benefits in social research is discussed. Yates also states that using combined research is extremely beneficial. From reading Neil Postman's book "Technolpoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology" you can see he feels all technology will do is create a two sided argument. He says "Another way of saying this is that the benefits and deficits of a new technology are not distributed equally. There are, as it were, winners and losers" (Postman, 1992, Pg.10). He feels that if someone benefits, someone must also suffer but, I disagree. His ideas are motivated by a story written many years ago that could have a totally different meaning but, he interprets in his own way. Advertising revenue for the ten largest newspaper companies peaked at $48.7 Billion in 2000 and has since plummeted to $23.9 Billion in 2012. The 2012 figure includes revenue from digital versions of the papers but this adaptation has not stymied the decline. On the surface, these numbers suggest that Neil Postman's claim in Amusing Ourselves to Death, that America was fulfilling Aldous Huxley's vision of a world where, “no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As [Huxley] saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacity to think.” (xix) Newspapers have historically been the most important technology to make one think so is does their decline spell our decline into an isolated, apathetic dystopia? To the contrary, I believe the collapse of the newspaper and the rise of internet journalism is creating a better informed and more socially aware society. The theoretical basis of the study hinged on technological determinism theory and social presence theory. The quantitative method was employed and a survey research design was used with the aid of the questionnaire as a tool for data collection to elicit information from the respondents. 324 respondents were purposefully selected. The respondents cut across all six departments (Mass Communications, Geography& Planning, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology and Economics) in the Faculty of social science. 24 questionnaires were dropped from the analysis on the count of incomplete data entry at the respondent end. Therefore, the analysis presented is for the remaining 300 questionnaires i.e n= 300. The findings revealed that Blackberry mobile phone influenced the lifestyle of more than half (180) 60% of the respondents, the male respondents 96 (32%) were more influenced compared to the female respondents 84 (28%) and the male respondent (52%) couldn’t do without the Blackberry mobile for a day as compared to the female, (48%).
