...E-Mail Netiquette Typing in all caps is used in an email for shouting or yelling and it is rude. If you just use capital letters where they belong then it sounds more as if you are having a conversation, asking simple questions or simply answering a question in a polite non demanding or judgmental way. Therefore, writing in all capitals in an email or any type of letter is known to be poor netiquette or rude. One of the most evaluated way that we are looked at as people, is what we say to some one, or how we say it. When it comes to a business e-mail or letter, you need to make the impression that you are professional, and will be someone that can be a pleasure to work with. You also don’t want any one to get the wrong first impression of who you are or who you represent. One of the first things that people see in an e-mail is the subject, it indicates what the e-mail is about, so keep it short and straight to the point, but all capital letters or all lower case letters can be made out as an unprofessional impression. If you are sending an e-mail that is work related and it pertains to more than just yourself, it is respectful to attach the people over you and the people in your office or work place to the e-mail. It is not only respectful but it is also so that they can see what is being said within that conversation. That way you don’t have to keep relaying messages and they can just read the conversation themselves. For example, one of your superiors is in the e-mail...

...TECHNOLOGY AND SMALL GROUPS Recent advances in new communication technologies are not only changing how small groups interact, but are also redefining our notion of a small group. Although some organizations have used technology such as telephones and videoconferencing for some time, those communication tools are costly. New technologies, particularly the Internet, allow for asynchronous and synchronous communication among small group members at relatively low cost. These technologies are altering small group membership, functions, and processes. Research on Technology and Small Group Communication Most research on the use of technology in small group work compares groups that use communication technologies (such as discussion boards and videoconferencing) to those that meet face-to-face. With the rapid changes in communication technology, many problems associated with groups that do not meet face-to-face have been reduced or eliminated. Still, groups that never meet face-to-face can encounter difficult challenges. And yet, not meeting face-to-face also has its advantages. New communication technologies can create new environments that produce more open, fluid, and dynamic small group environments. For example, recent research suggests that online discussions facilitate collaborative learning in the university classroom. One study found that students who are actively engaged in online discussion earned higher grades in large lecture class and felt that they learned more...

...Cyber bullying is a serious issue in today’s schools and business. If everyone adopted and educated people on netiquette guidelines, would this issue be solved? Explain. I believe that netiquette guidelines should be more practiced now than before. With many young people on the Internet, it is strongly advised to parents to monitor what, when, and why they are on the Internet. As stated, “There also have been sensational stories about teens committing suicide as a result of "cyber bullying" taking place on social networks”. (Bowles M. D. (2010) I can strongly relate to this statement because of my teenage daughter who is constantly on the Internet. With her being both a victim and an instigator of cyber bullying, I (as a parent) became quickly involved and reached out to her school officials and other parents to become aware and be educated on cyber bullying. I feel that if that all schools educated their students about netiquette guidelines, then there may be less incidents of cyber bullying. As for business, employers should uphold netiquette guidelines, in order for the workplace to be productive and safe. It can be incriminating to have a cyber bully harass anyone at the workplace. I think that cyber bullying can be solved if most people are willing to be educators and create awareness of netiquette guidelines in schools and business. If I post a poem on my Facebook site and someone cuts and pastes it on their site, is that a case for stealing my intellectual...

...Short Critical Reflection Paper * Some might say the crime of the 21st century will be white collar. If that is true, what will be the major types of cybercrime? How can we safeguard against it? I feel that some of the major cybercrimes that will take place are child exploitation, internet fraud, and computer hacking. Of these three, I feel that child exploitation is the biggest and most serious of them. All too often you hear of these sick individuals who go on these social media networks and convince the young people to meet somewhere and kidnap and commit other disgusting act with them. Internet fraud is another big cybercrime I see continuing to grow if we don’t get a handle on it. I receive numerous emails stating that I have been awarded money due to some settlement, or that some banker wants me to help them or go into business with them. I think the biggest ways to safeguard against these threats is to monitor your children’s usage on social media sites, ensure you install up to date security software and don’t answer emails from people who you don’t know. * What are the advantages and disadvantages of synchronous and asynchronous learning in an online class with students from different professions living all over the United States – just like Ashford? I believe that there are advantages and disadvantages in both synchronous and asynchronous learning in online classes. In a synchronous learning, the biggest advantages I feel is being able to discuss...

...yourself to others. The way you dress reflects how you look while around others. If a person is going to an interview business casual attire is the best dress code to a standard dress policy. The major parts of dressing the part for an interview whether in person or on the internet you should use punctuality, attire should be presentable and netiquette should be simple and clear. Having a business casual dress code means that your clothes is to be ironed, and neat and take a good care of your hygiene. If a male was to dress for and interview his attire should require Khakis, or dress slacks, button down shirt, and dress shoes. As for females attire should consist of Khakis, or dress slacks, skirts, blouses, and a dress that is appropriate for a job interview. Female should also wear sensible shoes that are comfortable in to wear all day. Corporate casual wear consists of slacks (other than jeans). As for men they can wear casual chino pants, polo shirt, dress sandals, and a jacket. For women a sweater, dresses, blazers, and skirts. The four points to attire and business etiquette is punctuality, attire, table manners, and netiquette. For starters punctuality is a way to show courtesy and respect for others. Being tardy for work will lead to stress on yourself and the waiting party that are counting on you to be on time. Your attire is always about looking the part for the position you are applying for. But coming into an interview business casual attire would be the best...

...Carson Reading 113 Netiquette Report The Importance of Online Etiquette Online etiquette, also known as netiquette is by definition the correct or acceptable way to communicate on the internet. In this paper I will be focusing on nine main points of online etiquette and the importance of each of them. The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you’d have others do unto you. This rule that most children are taught at a young age is often forgotten on a daily basis, especially online. Remember that although all you can see is a computer screen. There is a person with real feelings and emotions on the other side. It helps to ask yourself this question “Would I say this to someone in person?” before pressing the send button. Avoid excessive use of exclamation points and capital letters. To you these may be ways of showing excitement, while the person reading the post or message takes it as anger. An absence of face-to-face clues can cause written text to be misinterpreted. Try not to use humor or sarcasm. In an online setting you lose the ability to use facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice to communicate. Humor and sarcasm depend on tone of voice or facial expression that are absent in text communication. Re-read what you’ve written before sending. Messages often appear perfectly clear to you as the writer and turn out to be confusing to the reader. Especially if you feel strongly about something...

From its humble beginnings as a series of networks established to help the military and government share resources, it has become a place for people to engage in commerce and also for people to interact socially in both business and personal faculties. Along with the excellent opportunities for meaningful communication in this new atmosphere, the Internet has evolved as an open, democratic cyber society marked by free speech and volunteerism. It is a community gathering place for people to share ideas, concerns, stories and opinions, and to give help and assistance to one another. (Mills-Scofield) There has also arisen a series of problems. Whenever any major development in society is conceived, such as when telephones were introduced, problems ensue. The Internet, because of its modern nature is not really well dealt with when it comes to existing ethical and moral issues...

...CHAP 02 : THE INTERNET AND WORLD WIDE WEB 2.1. Evolution of the Internet * The Internet has its roots in a networking project started by the Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. * ARPA’s goal was to build a network that * Allowed scientists at different physical locations to share information and work together on military and scientific projects and * Could function even if part of the network were disabled or destroyed by a disaster such as a nuclear attack. * That network, called ARPANET, became functional in September 1969, linking scientific and academic researchers across the United States. * Internet2 * Internet2 is a not-for-profit research and development project that connects more than 200 universities and 115 companies via a high-speed private network. * Founded in 1996, the goal of Internet2 is to develop and test advanced network technologies that will benefit Internet users in the short-term future. * These technologies require an extremely high-speed network that exceeds the capabilities of today’s Internet and networks. * Connecting to the Internet * Cable Internet service provides high-speed Internet access through the cable television network via acable modem. * DSL (digital subscriber line) provides high-speed Internet connections using regular copper telephone lines. * Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) uses fiber-optic...

...Tips for Writing a Reflective Learning Log for an Assignment What is a reflective log? This kind of log is a record of your learning experiences, thoughts, feelings and reflections. It is not just a diary of what you have done, but a critical assessment of how you have progressed. It is less formal than other kinds of assignments - for example you should write in the first person. To be truly reflective you need to ask yourself some questions: • • • • • • What have I achieved? Have I made progress? Have I developed new skills? How might I use these skills in the future (at university or in the workplace)? How have I changed my learning style? What would happen if I continued to practice this new skill? Think about the last assignment you did.... • • • • • Were you satisfied with the result? How could you improve the process of planning, research or writing? How could you improve your marks? What new things did you try? How did you overcome any difficulties? The advantages of being a reflective learner Students who successfully keep learning logs often notice changes associated with reflection Accepting becomes questioning Information for this handout and presentation was taken from: Pulman, A.
