Q1.(a) Diagram 1 shows the neurones and parts of the body involved in a response to touching a hot object.

Diagram 1

A neurone is a nerve cell. Neurones carry impulses around the body.
(i) Draw a ring around the correct answer to complete each sentence. | Neurone A is a | motor neurone.relay neurone.sensory neurone. |

| At point Y there is a tiny gap between two neurones called | an effector.a receptor.a synapse. |

(ii) The hand touches a hot object. An impulse travels through the nervous system to the muscle (point X). The muscle moves the hand away from the hot object.
What does the muscle do to move the hand away from the hot object?

Nt1310 Unit 1 Assignment

...The Facebook page that I followed throughout the semester is called Jaxson Strong. Jaxon Burell is a 2 year old boy, and when he was born on August 27, 2014, he was diagnosed with a very sever and incurable brain disease, Microhydranencephaly. This disease is very noticeable to the naked, as the main symptom is a misshaped head from the time of birth. It comes with a very dangerous amount of fluid in the brain, which can really affect the body’s homeostasis and the way the brain functions. In most cases, the cause of the disease is unknown, however there are some rare cases where the disease can be caused by a defect in the NDE1 gene. There is no set life span for babies diagnosed with this disease, but in most cases, they die during childhood. The Jaxon Strong foundation was set up by his parents to inform and raise money for families affected by this awful disease. The money goes to neurological research and advocates living with this disease. This child will be severely handicapped until the day he dies. From birth, he has developmental issues and poor feeding habits. If a child falls behind developmentally, it is very tough to get back ahead of the game. They will have trouble beginning to walk, talk, and develop their basic motor skills. As they grow older, they do not have very good vision, which also affects their motor functions. They are also prone to infantile seizures, which can just add to their mental development delay. The families everyday life is...

Uses of Hypnotherapy to Treat a Medical Condition

...Uses of Hypnotherapy to treat a medical condition Introduction The purpose of this essay is to describe and explain the uses of hypnotherapy in the treatment of a medical condition. For this essay I have chosen to look at a chronic life limiting illness called Motor Neurone Disease. This is a disease that can affect many different aspects of a person’s life and is very aggressive in its symptoms. I have met quite a few people with this condition whilst working in the Neurophysiology department at the QMC, where all the nerve and muscles studies and EMG’s are performed. It not only changes the person’s life but also the lives of the people around them. I found this research both upsetting and informative. MND is a progressive degenerative disease which sadly has no known cure and sufferers will usually die within 5 years of the onset of the disease, there is no way to tell that you have this disease but there are many warning signs such as difficulty with speech, walking and dropping things due to not being able to grip correctly. MND is an unusual disease that damages nerve cells that the brain would usually use to send messages to the muscles and spinal cord where the upper and lower motor neurones are negatively affected. This then alters the muscle strength and can result in muscle loss. Theses neurons also if not working correctly will affect the messages sent to the brain giving the commands the body needs to enable walking, swallowing and any other muscle use. This...

Nature Versus Nurture: Theories of Learning.

...who has a twin brother in another school but the brothers live together in the same home environment. The reason the children are in different schools is because one child had been excluded from the school with his siblings and was transferred to a behavioural unit. There the child was diagnosed with dyspraxia which was causing him to lose his temper and lash out at his peers in frustration. This gave an ideal opportunity to observe the influences of nature and nurture on the development of 2 otherwise identical children. For most children with dyspraxia it is unknown why they have the condition. Children with developmental dyspraxia are found not to have any clear neurological disease. Research suggests that there is an under developed neurone while the brain was developing. Dyspraxia is a recognised impairment of movement commonly known as clumsy child syndrome. Children with dyspraxia have poor understanding of their own senses and have difficulties planning and organising their thoughts; physical activities are hard for them to learn. They are also slow in their development of speech and language. Gallahue (1982) found that the praxis is a learned behaviour but also has a biological component. Whilst observing this year 4 child I found that he could only follow...

...[pic] AQA GCSE Science A Biology Summary Notes B 1 1.1 Keeping Healthy Balanced Diet A healthy diet contains the right balance of different foods. A healthy diet contains the right amount of energy. It will provide carbohydrates for energy. It will provide fat for energy and insulation. It will provide protein for growth and repair. It will provide vitamins and minerals to help our bodies function well. It will provide fibre to ensure food moves through our digestive systems efficiently. It will provide water, which is essential for all body processes. If a diet is unbalanced a person is malnourished. This can lead to being too thin or fat and to deficiency diseases. Balancing the energy If you use more calories than you eat you will lose weight. If you use less calories than eat you will gain weight. Doing exercise uses up lots of calories. The effect of exercise on health Regular exercise keeps you healthy. It maintains a good metabolic rate. It requires energy so uses lots of calories. If they are not used up they are stored possibly as fat. Metabolic rate The rate at which chemical reactions happen in the cells of your body. One major metabolic reaction is respiration. This releases energy from the food we eat. Inherited factors affect metabolic rate: Some people inherit genes that give them a higher or lower metabolic rate than others. The higher the proportion of muscle to fat in your body, the higher you...

...THE NERVOUS SYSTEM  The nervous system allows the animal to quickly detect, communicate and co-ordinate information about its external and internal environment so it can make efficient appropriate responses for survival and/or reproduction. The two major parts of our nervous system are the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS is made of the brain and spinal cord.   The cranial nerves, spinal nerves and ganglia make up the PNS. The cranial nerves connect to the brain. The cranial and spinal nerves contain the axons (fibres) of sensory and motor nerve cells.   Nerve cells areas are also known as neurons. Neurons are the basic unit of the nervous system. They carry information or impulses as electrical signals from one place to another in the body. There are 3 types of neurons: Sensory Neurons- Sensory neurons carry electrical signals (impulses) from receptors or sense organs to the CNS. Sensory neurons are also called afferent neurons. The cell body of sensory neurons is outside the CNS in ganglia.   Motor Neurons- Motor Neurons Carry Impulses From The CNS To Effector Organs Motor Neurons Are Also Called Efferent Neurons. The Cell Bodies Of Motor Neurons Are Inside The CNS.   Interneurons- These are also called intermediate, relay, or associative neurons. They carry information between sensory and motor neurons. They are found in the CNS.  TOP The Structure of Neurons A Neuron consists of THREE MAIN PARTS:     A. CELL...
