...as my application may state, have been raised with the label of "Jewish" next to my name. To me, "Jewish", had always been little more than just that, a label. I attended Sunday School for several years, spending the majority of my time there wishing that I could be doing just about anything but sitting in that small, rundown building. Following my sixth grade year, my father's job moved my family of four from the tiny streets of Springfield, Ohio to the crowded suburbs of Cincinnati. My mother told my brother and I that we would be resuming our duties as young Jewish students in the then-near future. This occurred biweekly for about a year. Knowing well that my family has a tendency of planning things that never come into fruition,...

...Hello New Hope, There are certain things that just remind me of Christmas. Carols, Christmas Evergreens, Wreaths, and music. Particularly one of the things that never ceases to remind me of Christmas is the sound of jingling bells near a Salvation Army kettle. The kettle drive has a long and illustrious history dating back to 1891. In that year a preacher with the Salvation Army wanted to help the homeless and poor at Christmas. So, he placed a kettle near the ferry landing in Oakland and encouraged people to donate change to keep the kettle boiling. He raised enough funds to host a Christmas dinner for the poor and homeless in San Francisco. Today the kettles are still there still raising money for those who need it. But, they also serve always...

...When a company has good slogans it prompts consumers to associate certain thoughts and feelings with that company. If the USPS does a good job they could come up with a slogan that prompts both excitement and joy, pushing customers to be more apart, and increasing the company’s production. Slogans can be very beneficial to a company, but it takes more than that to keep a company floating. The USPS Postmaster feels that by eliminating Saturday deliveries it could help save the USPS (Source C). However, Richard Honack believes the exact opposite. He thinks that the USPS should also deliver on Sundays (Source A). Not only would this be risky, but it could be just what the USPS needs to separate itself from competition. For as long as mail has been delivered, it has never been delivered on a Sunday. Although today it seems very normal that shops are open on Sundays, it didn’t used to be...

...Looking back at ones past often resembles memories that are treasured forever or resented. In, “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke, “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, and in “Photograph of My Father” in His Twenty-Second Year by Raymond Carver, all the narrators have a relationship with their fathers. The narrators describe the negative memories of their father of either: drinking, being abusive, being fearful, or being a negative role model but, all still find the love for their fathers. In “My Papa’s Waltz,” the narrator describes his father as a drinker, “the whiskey on your breath” (line 1). The narrator wasn’t happy with his drinking, it made him feel sick, “Could make a small boy dizzy” (2) Similar to the narrator in “Photograph of My Father in His Twenty-Second Year,” demonstrates he was bothered and ashamed of his father, “I study my father’s embarrassed young man’s face. / Sheepish grin, he holds in one hand a sting/ of spiny yellow perch, in the other/ a bottle of Carlsbad beer” (lines 2-5). Both narrators have a negative memory of their fathers drinking. Different from the other narrators, in “Those Winter Sundays,” the narrator has a negative memory of his father calling him, “When the rooms were warm, he’d call,/ and slowly I would rise and dress, /fearing the chronic angers of that house” (lines 7-9). All the narrators had negative memories of their fathers. All three narrators had role model figure from their fathers. “In My Papa’s Waltz,” the narrator...

Elvis is smart and independent, having lost his mother when he was a young boy and growing up with a distant relationship with his father, Sunday. Throughout the novel, Elvis’s relationship with each character becomes important in defining Elvis’s character as a whole. Each character has a very distinct influence on Elvis and it is these different influences that shape him into the puzzled and distraught youth he is illustrated as in the novel. Elvis lives a different life when he is in Afikpo. In the first flashbacks, it is easy to see how close Elvis is with his mother, Beatrice. Beatrice is later revealed to be suffering from breast cancer and inevitable dies when Elvis is still young. But before she does, she makes full effort to teach her son everything necessary for him after she dies. Beatrice tells her mother, Oye, “I have taught him to sew, to iron, to cook, to read and write at a level beyond his age” (Abani 38). Beatrice’s teachings explains how Elvis is well beyond his years at age sixteen; he loves reading eminent works of literature and cares enough for his step-siblings to buy them food since their mother, Comfort, never would. After Beatrice passes away, Elvis remains close to his grandmother, Oye. In a later flashback, Elvis would read her letters from her pen pals. Abani writes, “Elvis enjoyed Oye’s trust. It was one of the few times when he felt needed”...

...Tsar a lot as he was able to sort out the small opposition groups separately rather than one massive one. However, we can then question the amount of impact done to the Tsar which then proves how much the Tsar was threatened by the 1905 revolution. From this, we can clearly see how the Tsar was affected in the short term and the long term. As previously mentioned, the Tsar still maintained the loyalty of the army and the police which is an important factor as to why the 1905 revolution did not threaten the position of the Tsar. As the Tsar still had control and the loyalty of the military, he was able to easily suppress the opposition and their riots with minimal loss to his power. Two main riots in the 1905 revolution, the Bloody Sunday and the Potemkin Mutiny, helped to corroborate the fact the as long as the Tsar still had the loyalty of the military, he will still be able to control the acts of oppression that could've potentially...
