...A toast to a new beginning Growing up in suburban Lahore, New Year’s eves used to be a quiet event. Yet excitement for the New Year was evident in the spirit of every child and adult. New Year’s Eve was the celebration of a new beginning. Something to be jubilant about. It was a time for a simple gesture of wishing health and wealth to all, and the best that life could give to all. Indeed, the New Year promised a bright future. Even today, the charm of the New Year’s Eve continues to thrill. Despite the face paced life, it offers a chance for friends and family to come together and celebrate a joyous occasion. It is a new hope harbored into an old fashioned cheer. It is here, as the clock approaches midnight that spirits are rekindled. However, standing united, facing a new beginning, my peers do stop for a moment and remember the past floating by. True, the year 2009 saw numerous challenges, many battles and much heartache. The economy painted a bleak picture. The woes of a common man mounted to new levels. Our land was in constant grip of terror. We lost many fellow countrymen as brave martyrs of terrorism. Indeed 2009 was a difficult year. It made the transition to 2010 a solemn attempt. But that’s the beauty of a New Year. A moment artificial yet so profound. It brings a new dawn. It is a chance to redeem oneself. It offers a brand new path to success. It is an opportunity to rise above and make a difference. A new year brings with it the making of new goals, settings...

...Going back to studying is a big step in my life having left formal education for over fifteen years now. It is not going to be an easy task with the demands and challenges of higher education but I am prepared and ready to face it. And in order to have a smooth transition to higher education, I need to work on the academic areas which I have always struggled with. All the while I have been working in the health and social care industry as a support worker supporting people with learning disability, mental health issues and autism to lead a more fulfilling and independent life. I help to promote choice, privacy and dignity, and believe that everyone should benefit from equal opportunity and not be limited or treated any less because of their disability. I have successfully undertaken and passed my National Vocational Qualification level 3 in Health and Social care. This course has enabled me to advance in my knowledge and improve my skills and has also enabled me to evaluate my daily working practices and to continuously reflect on my work. I had the responsibility of supervising other staff and preparing the monthly rota. I have attended mandatory trainings such as (Health and safety, fire awareness, food and hygiene, safeguarding vulnerable adults, person centred active support, medication administration, and to mention a few) to ensure that that I fulfil my role as a senior support worker and provide the best possible care. My responsibilities has led me to other training...

...Sahebi, Sherwin Conrad vs. Achebe 1. From the tone of Conrad’s view of Africa, he gives it a dark and mysterious view of the forests is never ending and nothing is silent. 2. The detail he gives shows how African life never rests among the winding paths that rivers lead you and how he is always on his feet ready for the worst to happen. He talks about the air being thick and dense with the tall tress surrounding the area where sunshine was blocked from the forest bring a view of darkness and fear. 3. Achebe views Africa as a marvelous place where he thrives and people are happy living according to their belief. 4. The details given from her shows the happiness of the clan dancing to the ekwe, and corrects to a celebration of a man taking the title of his clan. 5. The reaction Achebe has to Conrad’s choices are anti-parallel to each other. In Achebe’s paragraph’s, differences of tone, syntax, and detail are shown. Achebe’s tone is very unique in the way she writes her paragraphs. In the first and second paragraph, she talks about the clans performing peaceful dances. “Then from the distance came the faint beating of the ekwe…” a peaceful dance from a distant clan. “It is an ozo dance,” the man said from themselves. Achebe uses the Ibo language to show a difference of tone to indicate how the clans would talk among themselves. Conrad’s style of tone is much more different from Achebe. He uses more of a suspenseful tone than anything. Conrad says “we penetrated deeper and deeper...

...of paper, people sometimes can’t help but quiver? A sudden rush of fear and anxiety hangs over them. For a student or scholar in particular, it is not simply the beginning to reach the end of the test or the ‘be all end all’ in achieving something worthwhile in life. It provides the user with a key to delve into the realm of imagination with the purpose of gaining happiness or life’s true meaning. Imagination is something which is unique to ever individual on earth past or present, because like the world we live in, imagination is in constant change, adaption and always learning. When unlocked and encompassed with the power of the mind, imagination can achieve endless means in theory. For an artist this may be a chance to create something new, something colourful or perhaps even dark. For a scholar it creates a chance of expression through words. Right to expression however, is key to any successful contemporary or classical work most importantly. Whether for good or bad intentions it creates the basis for which to explore and perhaps even indulge. A blank canvas creates a new beginning. Like a second chance in life, an empty sheet can give an individual a new beginning and allows him/her to forget the past, it is no longer relevant, unless the artist depicts it that way. If it were not for blank canvases nothing new would ever be imagined just simply copied, tweaked and regurgitated in another...

...What is the relationship between rebranding and regeneration? Though the two concepts are often confused or used synonymously, rebranding and regeneration refer to two very different (but intrinsically linked) aspects of creating a new identity or “fresh start” for something, or somewhere. Regeneration typically refers to encouraging growth and restoration in an area that has previously displayed symptoms of decline, primarily the economy but also relating to other social, economic and environmental aspects of an area. Nonetheless, it is an essential aspect of creating a new beginning for an area because without a stable economic foundation, an area can struggle to grow and strive as it lacks the financial capability to continue expanding. Regeneration is seen as a long and continuous process that transforms a depleting area (in terms of economy and physical features) into a growing, stable area. Rebranding, however, refers to a much more varied and inclusive type of change – instead focussing on developing a place to change or improve its image and public opinion. This usually consists of two different actions: regeneration and reimaging. Rebranding as a concept usually includes regeneration as one of the two fundamental steps to positively transform or rebrand an area. Unlike regeneration, rebranding focuses on improving the actual physical infrastructure and environment of an area – the “inside” – as well as improving the public opinion towards the area and making...

...Enrolling in a college course was a new beginning for me because I haven’t been very good when it comes down to writing essays. But with the hard work and dedication that I put in this course I surprisingly became a much better one. I came into this class prepared, and knowing that it would be difficult and a new change compared to any other class I have taken before. This course has exposed me to many different writing technique and different writing skills that helped improve my writing in everyway possible. Throughout this English 1301 class I have learned self discipline, and how to handle stress. English is not quite my favorite subject, but during this course I discovered my weaknesses and strongest areas. As the days progressed during the course so did the challenges I had to overcome. One of my personal challenges I faced was the word count I had to meet in order to complete the assignment. By having a certain limit I had to reach not only made me use more details but challenged me in elaborating the topic I was talking about. In any college class you are expected to meet these high standards which I found very difficult but progressed within time and became better at writing more sufficient. Another obstacle I faced during the course was the four letter word time. Time played a crucial role in this course because it kept me from slacking off, and taught me to put school before anything else. At the beginning of the course we were given a syllabus of assignments...

...A New Beginning As many can tell you, life for a minority in the 1950’s was rough considering the strides that had been taken in the name of human and civil rights until that point. Slavery had long ended yet segregation was still common practice in various parts of the United States. Although every American is promised life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, it’s apparent how life can be different based on subtle differences from person to person. A Raisin in the Sun gives us a slight glimpse into what life could have been like for a black family during those times. The family in question is the Youngers. They are a small, close knit group who all want to find some sense of security in an unfair world. Lena, Walter, Beneatha and Ruth Younger all have a dream as to how they can escape the life of poverty that they have been living yet it still comes at a significant cost with the death of the patriarch, Mr. Younger. The Youngers are all waiting for his life insurance check of $10,000 to arrive while each member of the family has an idea of how they would like to spend the money. Lena, the matriarch, would like to use the money as a down payment on a house so that her family may have a fresh, new dignified start. The apartment they have been living in is cramped, worn and dark with no room to grow for their expanding family just like Lena’s house plant that receives just enough light and energy to stay alive despite the conditions facing it. Walter, Lena’s son, on the other...

...that I would like to erase for good. As I look back, I think the one event that really turned my life around was joining the Navy, 20 years later and I must say it was a decision well made. As I graduated high school my thought process was to be the first person in my family to go to college. Here I am an 18 year old boy from Queens, New York having to travel more than an hour to college, taking two buses and a train. Now this does not sit well with someone when it is in the middle of winter and you feel like the city is just eating you up. It was at that point where I figured college life was not for me. Transitioning from a place where I knew plenty of people to an environment that was completely made of strangers also contributed to my decision on leaving college. Now here I am attending college, it feels like things have come full circle; I am now laying the foundation for my children setting the example that I did not have while I was growing up. As for my future, I am looking forward to gaining more experience through more watershed moments and hopefully I have the awareness to enjoy the transition from the ending to the new beginnings. Situation Analysis When I was 18 years old going to college living with my parents, I have made up my mind to drop out of college and join the military. I did not know...

...viewpoint to Will’s, and in the movie it changes when we as viewer follows Marcus’s actions to Will’s. We know what Marcus and Will thinks, which gives us a perspective from several different angles and in this case keeps the story fresh and exciting. The author has done an incredibly good job, as he has managed not to lose the viewer/reader through the multiple viewpoints, and that is because the transitions are well done. The narrator is a 3rd person narrator and it is character-bounded to Marcus and Will. In the movie and the book, there are two main characters – Marcus and Will, who both are round characters because they develop much though the story. Marcus is a special 12-year old boy and seems very grown-up for his age. In the beginning of the story he is very influenced by his mother, Fiona, but as the story...

...Jose Luis Herrera Castillo. Foun 101. Aly Covington. Personal Narrative. 22nd October 2015. “Every day we are one step closer to filmmaking being as easy as taking out the brush and oils for a painting” (Veneruso, 1998). I was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela on June 21, 1994. I grew up believing in self-expression, showing yourself and never hiding who you really are from others, part of my envelopment as a child and a teenager has been surrounded by political issues, involving my country into sad and hard situations, destroying our culture, education and economy, forcing and scaring the people who decided to trust into a different opinion against the government, those ones will be recognized as “Traitors” and “Enemies of the nation” at least that was the way they used to call them. The visual arts means to me as a way to escape from reality and open our minds to others, to make them understand that there’s a another world outside complete different as the one who we live in now. At the age of seven, my father took me into a Father-son trip to the beach, where he gave me my first camera, an Instant water proof Kodak, one of the most beautiful gifts that i’m still appreciating from hem. Since then I have been feeling a passion for the Films and Photography a passion who becomes an intuitive path that guides me through life. For me films are about romance, adventures, tears, laughs and smiles, more than recording with a video camera, doing a film involves...

Mrs. Millard feels she will now be free, free, free. Mrs. Millard realized she will now only rely on herself and not anyone else; she could finally do as she pleases. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.” Implying that she is now to undergo a new beginning. She seems happy and relieved she could start alone. Chopin’s theme for this story was Freedom of a woman from a marriage. This story reveals the psychological pressures of women whom were submissive and unappreciated. “There would be no powerful will bending...

...one request—June and Day must assassinate the new Elector. It’s their chance to change the nation, to give voice to a people silenced for too long. But as June realizes this Elector is nothing like his father, she’s haunted by the choice ahead. What if Anden is a new beginning? What if revolution must be more than loss and vengeance, anger and blood—what if the Patriots are wrong? Review Note: This review will have slight spoilers for ‘Legend’ as well as ‘Prodigy’ so go read these wonderful books and then come back and discuss all of the things! What I liked (Besides the obvious, June and Day) Kaede: We get to see Kaede in this book. I know that some people are a little wary about her but for some reason I love her as a character and I’m glad we got to see her. The Tunnel Scene: I loved this scene because it shows that Day and June are real people. They pick fights and they have flaws. What I didn’t like Tess: I actually loved Tess in Legend but in Prodigy she was just really whiny and desperate to win Day’s heart. Like just kill her off already. Anden: I can see why people like Anden because he is nice and I think he really cares about June. I just didn’t like him because Day is obviously a better match for her and I was just eager to see June and Day to be together. Even though I didn’t love Prodigy as much as Legend, it was still a really great book overall. I forgot to mention in the beginning of this review that it took me two years on and...

...------------------------------------------------- my home and family back in Italy to explore a better life for myself. I felt as if I needed a fresh start ------------------------------------------------- It was on February 16, 1889 when I decided it was time to make a drastic change in my life. I wanted a life better for myself and the family so I headed out into the new world. This would mark the first time I would be leaving dear sweet Italy. I felt as if I needed a fresh start and America seemed like the perfect place to start a new beginning. I began my travel aboard a ship with other immigrants just like myself. The trip to America was not without its hardships the ship for the most part was crowded, food was in short supply and many of us got sick but never the less I was determined to make it. Enduring such hardships and surviving made me more appreciative about the life I have. ------------------------------------------------- Finally after such a long trip I have made it to America. The journey was long and crowded but after the things I saw it was well worth it. Ellis Island was the place where me and the other immigrants had made our way to. The year was 1892 the opening at the New York Harbor, until its closing in 1954. Those of us who arrived at Ellis Island was welcomed with open arms. There were hospitals available for those of us who we were ailing and needed immediate medical attention but before anyone was allowed in they had to first undergo an inspection. Those who failed were turned away and placed...
