...The English language is known as being one of the most difficult languages to learn. There are many reasons for this, a major factor being the use of figurative language. Since the English language is packed with figures of speech is can be very confusing to truly comprehend what someone is trying to get across. This doesn’t just go for the new comers to the English language but also to native English speakers. Throughout this paper I will define and give examples for ten different types of figurative language while providing appropriate usage. These types of figurative language include idiom, analogy, metaphor, simile, cliché, amphiboly, fame word, hyperbole, euphemism, and lastly colloquialism. Idiom Idioms are words or phrases that mean something different from what they are literally saying. For example “to burn the candle at both ends” means to exhaust yourself by doing too much ("Language Arts," 2010). At first it might not make much since. After thinking about it you may realize if you lit a candle at both ends it would actually burn out two times faster than just being lit on one side. An appropriate circumstance for using this example would be if you had a friend that worked two jobs and went to school full-time. You could say “wow you really are burning the candle at both ends”. Again you are stating how your friend is over working themselves and how they could burn out just like the candle. Analogy An analogy compares certain similarities between things which...

...Sarah Anastasia Freddino English 280 Dr. Holmes December 4th, 2014 Short Paper Assignment Assignment 5: Presidential Speech President John F. Kennedy – “City Upon a Hill” Speech (January 9, 1961) I have welcomed this opportunity to address this historic body and through you the people of Massachusetts to whom I am so deeply indebted for a lifetime of friendship and trust. For fourteen years I have placed my confidence in the citizens of Massachusetts — and they have generously responded by placing their confidence in me. Now, on the Friday after next, I am to assume new and broader responsibilities. But I am not here to bid farewell to Massachusetts. For forty-three years — whether I was in London, Washington, the South Pacific, or elsewhere — this has been my home; and, God willing, wherever I serve this shall remain my home. It was here my grandparents were born — it is here I hope my grandchildren will be born. I speak neither from false provincial pride nor artful political flattery. For no man about to enter high office in this country can ever be unmindful of the contribution this state has made to our national greatness. Its leaders...

...Analysis Rachel Hammer ELL240: Linguistically & Culturally Diverse Learners (ACV1340A) Instructor: Jessica Vargas November 4, 2013 In today’s classrooms, throughout America, there are a number of students who speak another language other than English. In fact, a majority of our classrooms consists primarily of English language learner students. For these students, interacting and participating in daily tasks, socially and academically, can at times be challenging. This added pressure and stress can wreak havoc for ELLs and can result in feelings of not belonging or loss of identity, their culture, family, or friends. They may also feel they lack the ability to fully express themselves through their native language. As teachers we need to take extra time and effort to understand that these students originate from diverse backgrounds, and some ELL students will have the learning skills that will enable them to pick up the English language at a more rapid pace than others. The reason for this seldom coincides with the student’s intelligence or motivation levels. Instead, we need to consider all the various learning strategies that can potentially help shape ELLs in becoming more confident in learning and speaking English. Throughout this assignment, I will thoroughly identify the different strategies that are presented throughout the classroom scenario, explain whether or not they are effective, describe how instructional input and scaffolding are used to support ELLs,...

Yet, it may not be effective unless the response time is optimised. This twin objective can be achieved through streamlining of the decision making process itself. In the Central Secretariat, as in other spheres of Government, contribution by all rungs of employees particularly by those at the cutting edge level, namely the Section Officers and Assistants, generally helps arriving at the right decision. Besides collection of information, such contributions are rendered through Noting & Drafting. Effective noting & drafting at every level, therefore, is a matter of prime concern. 2. To address this concern, we in ISTM have been according utmost importance to the inclusion of 'noting and drafting' as a subject in all our foundational and refresher Courses. ... Phonological processes are processes that occur on sounds when a speaker pronounces these sounds in specific languages. These symbols are identifiable by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart. These processes occur without the speaker even knowing that they occur, especially in English but linguists have identified these processes in relation to speech in specific languages. Therefore, one becomes aware when they have been linguistically educated about the various processes that occur when producing even one sound. Phonological processes may occur when a sound symbol takes on the feature of a neigbouring sound, the feature of the neighbouring sound has spread, this is known as assimilation or it takes on its own feature, this is known as non-assimilation. Many phonological processes exist like: nasalization, dentalization, velarization, affricatization, plosive release and many others that are related to the English Language but only fronting and aspiration will be discussed. Fronting is unavoidable, it is universal and hence, it occurs in every language. Fronting occurs on velar plosives, /k/ and /g/, when they occur before front vowels, /i/, /e/, /ɛ/ and /a/, in English. Consider the word key /ki:/, in order to make /i:/ the body of the tongue is brought up and forward on the hard palate and /k/ has a default position further back on the velum. The movement from /k/ to /i/ is made more efficient if the /k/ is brought forward, nearer to the hard palate, (Knowles...
