...since then this program has grown as is still around today and still going strong. They called each individual FAMILY that walk through their door and confidentially help them with all kinds of information, crisis intervention, and prevention. Their staff is both volunteers and paid associates that work a large scale of issues and problems that may arise ("Family of Woodstock", 2015). In 1970 Family was founded by eight volunteering individuals who were trained to work with people who were high on drugs, they would go into the persons home or where they were and spend hours making sure that they were ok. Gail Varsi, who actually told police to call her if there was any problems, is the founder of the Family Hotlines, her home phone number is still used as the hotline number today. She even had friends and volunteers at her home to answer the phone is she needed to leave her house (Gibbons, 2010). Today there are signs all over their establishments that state “any problem under the sun” (Gibbons, 2010) to ensure their clients that they will help them help themselves. They do not tell their clients what to do, they do not tell their clients how to fix their problems. They do not judge their clients for what they have done or what they have not done. Family has an open door policy where anyone can use them when they need to, for example someone comes in one week needing a food source and a month later they say they have a drug abuse problem and need help (Gibbons, 2010). ...

...Why should child abuse be stopped? Child abuse should be stopped because children have no control over their own lives and their little voices are often never heard, so it is up to parents or even adults without children to come down heavily on those that make an innocent child's life miserable by physical or cruel verbal abuse. Child abuse should stop because it's a horrible thing to abuse a defenseless being. Ten Reasons to Prevent Child Abuse 1) Child abuse can be fatal. Each year, an average of three children a day are fatal victims of maltreatment. The vast majority of these children are under the age of one. In Indiana in 2003, there were 51 children who died as a result of child abuse and neglect. For more details of the deaths in Indiana, click here. 2) Child abuse stymies a child's normal growth and development. The emotional and physical damage children suffer from abuse and neglect is extensive. Documented consequences of abuse include chronic health problems, cognitive and language disorders, and socio-emotional problems, such as low self-esteem, lack of trust, and poor relationships with adults and peers. 3) Child abuse is costly for many social institutions. Remediation of the immediate consequences of serious physical abuse alone costs child welfare agencies, hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities millions of dollars annually. For a detailed report on the costs of child abuse, click here. 4) Child abuse costs continue to multiply over time. For example...

...not, there is A major drug scene in Bangladesh now, and it's infecting the minds of today's youth, the people we like to call our future leaders. | | Farah (not her real name) is 18 years old and has been using drugs since the age of 14. Her story like many others started out with Marijuana. It was through the simple use of Marijuana that she opened the doors to a much wider use of drugs. After experimenting with drugs for a bit, she soon realised that she was addicted to heroin. She says it was purely accidental, and soon enough got over the addiction. Farah suffered from severe withdrawal but eventually when she kicked the habit she knew that she could never go back to it. But after hearing about a new drug called Yaba, she decided to try it. She started using it after she entered a circle of friends who were completely immersed into it. In her opinion that is not the only reason she started hard drugs again: “Everybody is doing it because there is nothing better to do in this town”. The truth is that there are umpteen drugs being used in Bangladesh, Heroin, Cocaine, Ecstasy, Yaba, Phensydil, Crystal Meth, and many more. The problem is that the number of users is rising at a frightening rate. Worse, these drugs have found mass appeal in almost all age groups. ...Empowerment is a process used to assist individuals, families, groups and communities to use their strengths to overcome the challenges they presently face by implementing resources and tools around them. Personal empowerment is in reference to an individual’s competence and strength and ability to create change and focuses on ways to develop personal power and self-efficacy. It also points toward a biased state of mind, a feeling of competence within oneself, and experiencing a sense of control. Interpersonal empowerment refers to one’s ability to influence others and is derived from two sources. The first source is based on social status such as class, sex, and gender and the second source is power which comes from learning new skills and securing new positions in addition to successful interactions with others and the respect others have for us. Political empowerment is in reference to one’s relationship with political organizations and the process of transferring resources, capabilities and positions to those who do not have them. It also emphasizes the goals of social action and change and expects to transfer power to the society while keeping individuality. Social work is divided into three levels or categories: micro, mezzo, and macro. Micro level means...

...dilemma that soon surfaced was the neglect of her mother. Krystal and her brothers often opened the summer camp with me, meaning they were the first children of the day - at 6:00am in the morning and they consistently closed the camp at 6:00pm Monday through Friday. It was difficult to tell whether or not Krystal and her brothers had breakfast before they came to camp each morning, but it was evident (early on) that feeding her children was not the priority of Krystal’s mom; fore although Krystal’s mom drove a brand new Cadillac Escalade, wore brand new clothes, always had her nails done, and dripped of gold - a ring on each finger, long dangling ear rings (3 piercings each ear lobe) and several layers of gold necklaces, Krystal and her brothers only had a corn dog for their long 12 hour day at camp. Not wanting to embarrass Krystal, her brothers or their mom, I started bringing food for all the campers; in fact, I started a snack list and was able to get many parents to donate snacks and juices weekly - this way every child was fed and no one was the wiser. Never did I image that the neglect would continue and actually get worse. One morning, Krystal was at the water fountain crying a cry I have not heard (since I was a child). Krystal’s mother was yelling at her and slapping her over and over instructing her to ‘shut up’ and wash her hand. As I came over to assist, Krystal’s hand was bloody, swollen, already very bruised and the nails on two of her fingers were pulled up...

...Life is Like a Gamble “Life is like a gamble, sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. But whatever cards in life, whether club, spade or diamonds, always remember - never play with the heart” (Anonymous, SearchQuotes). There are many harsh lessons to be learned from the gambling experience, but the cruelest one of all is being able to fathom the distinction between having fun and being smart. Unfortunately for adolescents, their impression of having fun is very different from that of adults. Therefore, when it comes to gambling, their incorrect impression of “fun” might lead them towards the unforgiving process addiction. Here, we will discover the sad but true statistics of children and young adults addicted to gambling. Luckily for these individuals, there are ways to escape and prevent this demanding lifestyle, and they will be touched on. However, if they choose not to opt out of this routine or their impulses take over, significant dangers can become prevalent. These perils can lead to an unhappy life and in the worst cases, death. Therefore, it is exceptionally important to bring these three things to light in this assignment. With the widespread acceptance of gambling as a socially acceptable activity, the trend is rising dramatically. Over the last twenty years, legalized gambling has increased about 3000 percent. In the United States, people legally wager about $600 billon on average (Lew, Hall, Williams, Page 400). This does not take into account the...

...Mission Statement Women in Distress’s mission statement is to stop domestic violence abuse for everyone through intervention, education, and advocacy. Executive Summary Women in Distress was founded in 1974 by Edee Greene. It was the first 4 bedroom homeless shelter for women in Broward County, FL. One day a woman came to the shelter because she had nowhere to go and was turned away because she had her children and the shelter did not accept children. The next day the victim was murder by her husband in front of her children. This tragedy allowed Edee and 4 other women to see the need for a bigger shelter that would support women and their children. They put their money together to purchase a 54 bed shelter for women and children of domestic violence. Over the years Women in Distress has grown in services that are provided. In 1995 they increased their visibility by opening a center in Ft Lauderdale, FL known as the Jim and Jan Moran Family Center. This center provided counseling session, mentor session and was easy accessible for clients, advocates, and court officials. Japan stated this legal prostitution was needed to prevent public rape, the spread of STDs, and to provide comfort to soldiers who were home (so the soldiers wouldn’t spill military secrets). I don’t understand how legal prostitution would stop the high rape rate? To me it seems like the legalization of sex slavery would encourage rape. This encouraged the “Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act” in 1956, initiated by India to legalize living on the earning from sex work and capturing then imprisoning women into prostitution. How could this new issue be controlled? Not until 1995 did the United Nations hold a world conference about...
