...It was recently reported that an American private company by the name of Gen4 Energy is currently in the development stage of designing a new breed of small nuclear reactors that will primarily be operated underground and will only need refuelling once every decade. One of the design plans the company is mainly focussing on consists of a 25-megawatt reactor that could effectively provide power for approximately 170 of the world’s small islands and over 100 remote U.S. government facilities. Additionally, as stated by the company, the electricity would be much cheaper than that produced by diesel generators and not to mention more environmentally friendly as well. Traditional nuclear power plants are large, above ground, “thermal power stations in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. The nuclear reactor is the heart of the plant whereby the heat is generated by controlled nuclear fission”1. With this heat, a coolant is heated as it is pumped through the reactor, which removes the energy from the reactor. Heat from nuclear fission is used to raise steam, which runs through turbines, supplying power to electrical generators. The new trend in smaller nuclear reactors stems from the increasing safety and building costs concerns’ caused by that of the larger above ground nuclear power plants. For instance, the Fukushima accident which took place in Japan during 2011 when a “tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant releasing substantial amounts of radioactive materials...

...I sat at the front porch at home and I didn’t see kids playing on the block after school, or on weekends. All my neighbor’s home doors are closed and I don’t know them, or their kids. Communication between my neighbors doesn’t exist. We are strangers because our lives are too busy and we do not have time to stay outside to know each other. When I was a child we used to play ball on the street, ride our bicycles, enjoy card games, traded baseball cards, or ran races to see who was faster. I remembered running home to get money because the ice cream truck is coming or running home for help because you got hurt once brought all the neighborhood kids to your door to wait and see the results. A quarter in your hand or a new clean band aid was admired and then everyone went back to happily playing the game at hand. Now that is history and we just talk about the good times kid had when they used to play on the streets. I go to my sister house and my nephews are with all their electronic games that replaced the precious time of playing on the street with the neighbors. They are lazy, their initiative is gone, and new inventions and communications do not exist because they want to build their scores in their favorite electronic games. Playing games alone is the most common they to do; one could be happy knowing that kids will not get into trouble since they won’t be exposed to dangerous things that are happening on the street nowadays. I see the streets empty of bustling children...

...boys and the one could not and would not separate himself from the T.V. or the electronics. That was not the case with the youngest one he loved to build things, with blocks, books, and blankets. He would stack things on top of each other to see how high they would go before they would start to lean or fall. He loved playing with other kids, but one of the things that he loved to do by himself was play with the blocks. One of the many times that he was playing and I was observing him, he was using the new bock set that he had gotten for Christmas. They were very similar to jenga blocks in their shape and size but they were all different colors. I watched him separate all the colors from each other and he built different towers out of each color. Then after he had done that he took all the colors and started stacking them up as high as he could the first few times he didn’t get very far because he would hit it on accident and the whole stack would tumble over, but he never gave up. Just like the kid in the video he kept trying and had the determination and the drive to get every...

...Alvaro M. Alegre Professor Russell Green Composition II Free-range parenting: What is so bad about it? Even though the fear of kidnapping when kids are left alone is present on many parents the benefits of allowing children to work and play independently builds confidence and skills. Kids take risks naturally (climbing to the top of a monkey bar, jumping out of the stairs) despite the potential of failure because they want to grasp new skills and becoming more mature and responsible of their own actions. When I was a kid growing up in Peru I remember every single kid in my neighborhood would be at the park jumping and running around. I even remember going with my buddies to the local store that was about 10 block away of our houses. It is just the way you grew up over there. Yes, you see some parents at the park watching out for their kids too but that was usually to the facts that the kids were too small or have no older siblings to watch for them. That is why when I move to the suburbs of Virginia, at the age of 17, surprised me to see all the parks and streets deserted, no kids playing ball or running around. When I start doing my research for this project I learned a lot about the way people see this “free-range” parenting. I think that just putting labels it’s problematic, like Ruth Paris, a professor at Boston University’s School of Social Work, said “generally speaking, parents should make decisions based on their family dynamics, not because they subscribe to...

...PLAY: It’s the way young children learn A special supplement to the Children’s Advocate, based on a policy brief from the Bay Area Early Childhood Funders (References at www.4children.org/play.htm) generation ago, kindergarten was supposed to get kids ready for school. But now everyone is talking about the importance of “school readiness” before kids get to kindergarten. That’s why many parents, anxious for their children to succeed in school, want early care and education programs to have children sit at tables using work sheets, drills, and flash cards to learn letters and numbers and even starting to read, add, and subtract. But preschoolers learn differently from school-age children: play is essential to early learning. Play is the main way children learn and develop ideas about the world. It helps them build the skills necessary for critical thinking and leadership. It’s how they learn to solve problems and to feel good about their ability to learn. Children learn the most from play when they have skilled teachers who are well-trained in understanding how play contributes to learning. Most child development experts agree that play is an essential part of a high-quality early learning program. Play is not a break from learning—it’s the way young children learn. A time following teachers’ instructions. Several studies have shown that children learn more from educational activities that support their own interests and ideas. Some researchers have found evidence that...

...Isolation Have you ever felt isolated from your surroundings, either because of language or culture wise, being new in town, feeling friendless, or simply because you have to study while everyone else is out having fun while you study? Well I have had many experiences like those. There was a time in which I had moved from New Jersey to Tennessee and I was the new kid on the block. Also there was another addition in my life back when in my childhood years when I had first started school as kindergartener. Well it was a chilly early morning with bright blue skies in early September. The birds were out and singing with a smooth and majestic melody. I was only four or five and about 3’5 with a fresh new haircut. I remember I was a nervous wreck with a sad look on my face for the simple fact that it was my first day in a room filled with strangers. As the minutes would pass by waiting in the humid office with my parents on some paper work that needed to be done I would constantly have that thought in the back of my head on how thing would be in that new room that I was destine to go. Then came that dreadful sentence that I didn’t want to hear, “Well everything here is done. Carlos is now able to go to his new room.” Walking down the hallway to the room it seems like the hallway would expand and we were walking forever. To my surprise I turn my head in a sad manner to be surprised that we have not...

...Neurobehavioral Observation When I walked into the classroom at the Velma Thomas early childhood center, there was certainly a lot to look at. My eye was drawn to the colorful kid-made art on the wall, to the thriving indoor garden on the windowsill, and to the frazzled teacher attempting to explain the concept of sharing. The first child I noticed, however, was Laurence. Laurence is a small, lively young boy with brown skin and curly hair. He has recently turned five, making him one of the two five-year-olds in a class of 3- and 4-yr-olds. And at the moment I began my observation, he was rolling on the carpet. A classmate, Elena, took Laurence’s hand and started to pull him up off the floor. Laurence sat up, and then stood, without letting go of Elena’s hand. Elena pulled Laurence across the room towards a display of pictures of hands on the wall. Laurence pulled his hand out of Elena’s, and used it to reach out and touch the wall. He stomped his foot, and ran back to his square of carpet. Upon returning to the carpet, Laurence saw a book on the floor, a large blue textbook with a cover that proudly proclaimed, “SCIENCE.” He took hold of the book with both hands, opened it to a page near the middle, and placed the book on his head. The aforementioned frazzled teacher, Miss Rachel, said to him, “Laurence, I noticed what you’ve been doing with books today, and I wondered if you remembered what we do with books.” Laurence’s smile widened as he looked at Miss Rachel and giggled...

...this really smart kid named b Rasiah Walldeen who moved from Fiji to a city deep in Texas called El Paso. El Paso did not have very many schools that were interesting to the children that moved there from other states. Rasiah’s family had a great inheritance that they received from their great great grandmother many years prior to the move. They only request from the grandmother was that they used a percentage of the money to create a place that many people could use to better their life and become something great. So after Rasiah attended the school for the first couple of months in El Paso, he was very unhappy with the school. He was sad to see the way the children were so unhappy there including him. The school was not a happy place to learn like his school was in Fiji. That evening Rasiah went home to talk to his mother and father about the school. His parents were not pleased about how their son was feeling, so they suggested using a percentage of the inheritance as the grandmother suggested to build a school were the kids could explore hands on learning, with field trips every week and teachers that liked to have fun teaching and showing the children great things. Making the school a place to be excited about returning too every day. Rasiah was so happy because he thought this would make so many of the kids at his school happy and they would learn while having fun. They would hire all new happy teachers and staff that enjoyed seeing the kids every day. So the...

...1. Who are the founders of kaingin? An English block (professor: Mr. Bing Polo) of Batch 1984. It was started in their first year of college (1981). Started as an immersion/exposure activity, initially as a requirement by Mr. Polo, then the insertions became a regular thing (not weekly initially, but intermittently) for some members of the class. The group that continued to go on insertions invited friends from other classes and the group grew. The following year, Mr. Polo required another exposure trip for his English class, and some people from that batch joined the upperclassmen who went regularly. Eventually it became a weekly thing (Saturdays). Midweek, we would have a prayer/sharing session, conducted by our Spiritual Advisor, Denny Toledo, who eventually became a Jesuit priest some time after we graduated. 2. Why was it started? What brought these people together? *see above 3. How did the idea of building an organization start? *see above 4. When did Kaingin officially become an org in ateneo? ...2. On Monday October 14, 2015 I observed in the two-three year old program at the Lab School. When I first got in there, the teacher had the kids sat down in a circle and handed them all plastic spiders. She then played a song that had them move the spiders to different parts of their body. This would be an example of scaffolding because that was a way the kids could learn, but also keep entertained and have fun all at the same time. When it was time to change tasks, the teachers would always sing their words to get the children’s attention. This would be an example of infant-directed speech, as they are making it easier for the children to understand. (Steinberg, Bornstein, Vandell, & Rook, 2011) 3. The first child I observed doing physical things was a girl named Aditi who was born on November 23, 2012. When Aditi was done with her snack, she got up and threw her trash away, and then went over to a table by herself and started doing a small muscle activity by putting a puzzle together. Once she got tired of that she walked over to the other toys and picked up an airplane and started flying it around the room, which she used large muscles for. The second child I observed was a boy named Zeno, his birthday is on April 4, 2013. When Zeno was done...
