New York 1900-1940: William Lamb's Empire State Building

New York 1900-1940 New York during the early 20th century is obviously not the state we know now. Horse and buggy pulled the population around town, and newspapers were the main form of media to educate the public on world happenings. Buildings were built, photographs were taken, and sculptures were sculpted to mark their place in history. William Lamb, an architect at the firm Shreve, Lamb, & Harmon, designed the layout for the famous Empire State Building in New York City. Construction began in January 1930 and the building was completed in April 1931. The cultural aspect of this building is historical. The Empire State Building was created solely to win the race of creation of the tallest building in the world standing at 1,250 feet. Its at-the-time rivals were the Chrysler Building and the Manhattan Company Building. However, the Empire State Building was eventually beat by the World Trade Center, built in 1973. The cultural aspect in my opinion is both psychological (due to illusion, later discussed) and social, reflecting social class. River Rats was created by George Bellows to show low-income children below a cliff; however, the viewer sees much more. From a viewer’s perspective, this painting shows upper class versus lower class. The lower class is by the river working, or just living. The upper class is above the ciff, by populated areas and taller buildings. When the viewer looks closer, one may see a ‘rat’ in the painting, looking below at the lower class. Bellows didn’t originally state that this is what he intended the viewer to see. Communication in his work is through comment, making the comment to the viewer that it is the illusion of the rat that brings the viewer to believe Bellows looked down to lower class
