Neal Boudette writes about the concern in The New York Times, “More worrisome is that the drops in export sales have come even as manufacturers have resorted to heftier discounts, which eat into their profits. Sales incentives are now equal to more than 11 percent of the average vehicle sticker price. As recently as 2014, that figure was below 8 percent” (par. 6). ...http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2013/03/26/honda-odyssey-vacuum-cleaner-honda-vac-new-york-auto-show/2022873/ NEW YORK -- An automaker thinks it has finally solved the problem that has dogged family vehicles since the dawn the automotive age: an easy way to get rid of all the junk that drops between the seats. Honda is bringing what it says is the industry's first vacuum cleaner to 2014 Odyssey minivan, which will be displayed here at the New York Auto Show opening this week. The small HondaVAC, as its being called, is built into the minivan's rear well. It is meant to be an easy solution to the bane of parents everywhere who have seen the accumulation grow after any long car trip -- tiny tiny mountains of stray french fries, straw wrappers, pennies and Skittles from stem to stern. The most obvious of all minivan options grew out of the idea of a single engineer who came back from a trip with his kids frustrated about the garbage that accumulated in the family vehicle, says Tami Giammarco, a Honda senior engineer in Ohio. "We found it would have a lot of value to our customers," she says. So the team started scouting gas stations and car washes to figure out the secrets of the best auto vacs. The result was a small unit with a hose long enough to reach the entire minivan cabin. It comes with two heads, a wide one and a narrow one for crevices. In a test run by USA TODAY with a variety of junk food, the vac easily sucked up Froot Loops cereal but choked...

Downsizing of the Us Auto Market.

...Downsizing of the US Auto Market. Automakers will begin reducing production, cutting sales, or preparing for price wars in order to get rid of inventory. This type of downsizing may hurt Big Auto, forcing layoffs and reducing services offered. The consumers will no longer be able to afford expensive cars and would prefer keeping the current car they purchased. Even if the car is not worth the balance owed. Big Drive Auto will no longer carry certain makes or models, which would hurt sales. (Carseek, 2007) On the other hand, if downsizing affects the sale of cars, Big Drive Auto can look at generating revenue in the other two areas listed. Generating revenue in the other two areas may not show a major increase in sales, but should give a positive growth within the next five years. Downsizing falls in the recession area of the business cycle. The recession phase is a “period of decline in total output, income, and employment.” (McConnell, Brue, & Flynn, 2009). Americans No Longer Driving The culture of owning a new vehicle is dropping. Consumers are no longer driving, which decrease sales at car dealerships. Higher gas prices and rising unemployment plays a role in consumers purchasing cars. Evidence of this change can be found in the model below, created by Nate Silver, which reveals a snapshot of a decline in American Driving. This information created from information listed in the Federal Highway Administration, writes Nate Silver. (Esquire, 2009) Mergers...

Article on Oprah

...has had numerous articles, books, and magazines, dedicated to highlighting her success. Another article in the New York Times summing up Ms. Winfrey’s accomplishments is nothing less than typical. However, what is uncommon is to come across a writer such as gossip columnist Kitty Kelley, doing what no one dares to do and confronting the negative and practically silent aspects of Oprahs’s stardom. In Kitty Kelley’s Oprah biography, she provides her readers with a raw and insightful view contradicting The New York Times view on Oprah as an ultimate multimedia icon. Oprah Winfrey has set a silent standard to the way her fans and outside viewers perceive her, this standard being that you, do not question the queen of talk. The New York Times along with other newspapers and magazines would not dare contradict Oprah because in the eyes of the media she has the very two qualities we love as a nation, power, and money. The article in the New York Times states her accomplishments as her show “Oprah” is now soon to end, and what else is in her future. It is all apart of the typical praise that follows the headline “Oprah Winfrey”. As mentioned our nation loves money and power so it is by no surprise the opening sentence into the article states “Oprah Winfrey, the first black woman to appear on Forbes billionaire list” (New York Times). In one simple opening statement the New York Times states, all that needs to be said to highlight Oprah’s success as a billionaire and most importantly as...

Ebert1 and Mariel Montoney2 1 2 Department of Economics, Baldwin-Wallace College, 275 Eastland Rd., Berea, OH 44017; Economics Program, Baldwin-Wallace College, 275 Eastland Rd., Berea, OH 44017 The South Korean automobile industry has undergone considerable growth since its inception in the 1960s. That growth was initially driven by domestic demand. Since the Asian financial crisis of 1997, however, production increases for the South Korean automobile industry have been primarily a function of export sales. The research presented here explores changes in the structure of demand in its two principal marketsdomestic South Korean market and the United States market. Two models of demand are developed- one for each of the markets. Several macro economic variables are identified that have a statistically significant relationship with the demand for automobiles in each of the markets. An interesting finding of the research is that the factors apparently driving demand are different in the two markets suggesting the structure of automobile demand in South Korea differs significantly from the demand for that country’s vehicles in the United States. A major challenge facing the South Korean automobile industry is how to utilize its capacity when confronted with...

Luxury Car Retailing and Trends

...Luxury Car Retailing & Trends Executive Summary A luxury car is indeed a status symbol that is a reflection of one’s personality and power in society. There is a steady increase in luxury car customers globally as there is a rise in income, wealth and urbanization. It is more of a dream come true of the rising middle class to purchase and own a luxury car. After the global financial crisis (Reyneke et al., 2012) hit the luxury auto market, it was interesting to find that the younger generation maintained their spending habits and joined the baby boomers who were already major consumers of luxury cars. However, the concept of cars being a boy toy has certainly evolved with the emergence of female consumers . These women are driven by their need to showcase their power and independence. The finest example are the Chinese and Middle Eastern women who have come out of their cocoons and protested against a male dominated culture and purchasing luxury cars were a part of that change. As the younger generation have become more environmentally conscious, luxury car retailers have adopted the ‘go green’ concept by bringing out diesel run and electric cars. Another trend that is picking up is the customization of cars. Luxury car retailers have chosen to customize their car for their customers providing them exclusivity and satisfaction as the customers get what they exactly want. The sales for luxury cars from 2012 to 2014 have been forecasted to increase steadily but there are...

Geography of the 2012 U.S. Election

...or more specifically, when studying states called swing states. It is said that the results of these swing states can determine the outcome of the entire election. The overall geography of the 2012 Election looked like what most expected it to, with Obama winning with 332 of the electoral votes to Romney's 206 (Andrews, Bartz and Tumgoren). In fact, Nate silver, of the New York Times, correctly predicted every single state's winner. Regions that went to Obama include the West Coast, the Northwest, the Northeast, and Megalopolis. While regions that went to Romney include the Great Plains, the South and the majority of the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin region. However, not all of these regions went entirely to one candidate or the other. In the South, Obama won Florida, as well as Colorado and New Mexico in the Great Plains. Another split region was the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin region, with Romney winning Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming and Obama winning Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico (Andrews, Bartz and Tumgoren). This divide between Obama and Romney in different states and regions begins to show a pattern. The majority of states that Obama won are states with bigger cities, meaning bigger populations. When it comes to demographics, there were a few different groups that came into the picture in making a difference for the winner. The most predominate ones being age and race. For example, exit poll results showed that Americans under 30, who made up 19% of...

...Chapter 15- Problems and Problem Cases: Problem 10 “Gianni Sport was a New York manufacturer and distributor of women’s clothing. Gantos was a clothing retailer headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1980, Gantos’s sales total was 20 times greater than Gianni Sport’s, and in this industry, buyers were “in the driver’s seat.” In June 1980, Gantos submitted to Gianni Sport a purchase order for women’s holiday clothing to be delivered on October 10, 1980. The purchase order contained the following clause: Buyer reserves the right to terminate by notice to Seller all or any part of this Purchase Order with respect to Goods that have not actually been shipped by Seller or as to Goods which are not timely delivered for any reason whatsoever. Gianni Sport made the goods in question especially for Gantos. This holiday order comprised 20 to 22 percent of Gianni Sport’s business. In late September 1980, before the goods were shipped, Gantos canceled the order. Was the cancellation clause unconscionable?” (Mallor 433). According to the doctrine of unconscionability, the cancellation by Gantos was unconscionable. Gantos was a larger company, and therefore was able to determine the terms of the contract, and Gianni Sport, being the weaker of the two, had no practical choice but to adhere to the terms. Under the UCC, the courts have the power to manipulate the provision containing the unconscionable terms to make the contract just. In this case, I believe the courts would take...
