...bought a big house in Frisco. I had never seen a house this big before, because the houses in New York were small and cramped compared to a middle class houses of Texas. I felt out of place at first, because all my friends were living in New York, and I was friendless in Texas. After I started school, I found out most people there were new to Frisco as well. I made new friends, went to a new church, and life was starting to look up again. I quickly came to love Texas more than I did New York; however, all good things must come to an end. One night my sisters and I were eating dinner in the living room while my dad was outside drinking a beer and talking to his friends on the phone. After dinner my mom started walking us to our rooms. She then went outside to get my dad and she let him sleep on the couch because he has already passed out outside. We went to sleep and in the morning my mothers friend had come to take us to her house. Later that day, my mom came to her house crying and that's when I found out on September 23, 2005 my father had died of a sudden heart attack. I never really knew what happened until 11 years...

...For months, a conflict was brewing between rival gangs in New York. The Guardians were arguably the most harmful of them and comprised two groups, the Red Division committed minor crimes regularly and the funds obtained from such offenses financed the Black Division. This group became identified with the organized crime, it operated. It additionally became common knowledge in New York that it was most advisable to adhere to the demands of the Guardians as failure to do so often resulted in death. With the motto of the Guardians being "Follow or die" this perception became increasingly believed. The only people ready to stand up to them were the Royals, but they did so to obtain cash themselves. Red Division and the Royals may have shared committing...

...The writers of the book Stolen Into Slavery: The True Story of Solomon Northup, Free Black Man, are not new to the world of writing. On the contrary, they are veteran authors who have researched and written numerous books. Judith and Dennis Fradin recognized that investigating and writing about the fascinating life of Solomon Northup would result in an inspiring book. Before the beginning of the Civil War Solomon Northup lived as a free black man in New York State with his wife and three children, which makes his narrative of being kidnapped and enslaved all the more incomprehensible. Solomon was an educated black man; therefore he was able to compile a narrative of his years as being a stolen “free” black man on the Louisiana cotton and sugar cane plantations. After Solomon was rescued from a Louisiana plantation and reunited with his family, he published his autobiography entitled, 12 Years a Slave. This autobiography led to the creation of a movie by the same name as well as a book for which this summary was written. What an individual remembers and what actually occurred can at times be hard to prove, yet the Fradins were able to verify many of Solomon’s accounts by acquiring actual bills of sale and court records. Any author can write about facts, but with the help of Solomon’s memoirs the Fradins were able to produce a...

...ninth nineteen eighty at Mount St. Mary's hospital in Niagara Falls New York I am her second son and last child I have an older half brother Shawn Christopher Eager who currently resides in Toronto Canada. My mother and father Charles Llyod Treichler were only married for a few years before divorcing when I was about two years old she currently lives in Hudson Florida with my step father Captain Anthony Herbert Cole. I was raised in western New York until I was seven and my mother married my step father Tony who is from Canada and me and my mother and brother relocated to Mississauga Ontario. Growing up in a country where a lot of people disliked American's was not easy I did not fit in very well and go into a lot of fights with other kids especially some Vietnamese kids I went to school with after making the mistake of telling someone my father was a veteran or the Vietnam war. I was an average student and disliked school in Canada. I felt the schools there laked a sense of spirit compared to schools in the united states there were never any clubs or groups no prep rallies or home coming dances or things of that nature it was more like an institution. I never felt like I fit in living in Canada I was the only Treichler in the entire country and I had no sense of real family or knowing where I came from. I spent most of my summers with my father and grandparents in what I consider my home town Sanborn New York. I loved it there going to the races at Rasomville every Friday night...

...Primary Sources Assignment Newton, John. “Amazing Grace.” Hymns of the 49th Parallel. 5th ed. New York: Baptist Hymnals Publishers, 1974. In the world of music, there are many songs that bring one joy, excitement, or delight. In other cases, there are songs that lead one to sadness, depression, or loneliness. However, there are also significantly few songs that reach down to the very depths of your heart and touch you in a way that is truly moving. This sort of emotion was felt when I heard the hymnal “Amazing Grace” by John Newton, and is still felt today. As a young child, I never really understood the complexity of the Holy Bible, the stories within it, or the ‘grace’ that is so freely offered. I often admittedly fell asleep in church or simply passed the time away by drawing funny pictorials of biblical characters I was supposed to learn about in Sunday school. Considering I was just like the other typical rebellious eight year old boys, this was quite acceptable in my opinion. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until one special Sunday evening service that I finally ‘came of age.’ The standard ‘boring’ service went on as it usually did and as the preacher summed up his message, my mother, the piano player, made her way up to the front of the sanctuary. As she began to play, the choir began to sing. I began to listen, and my heart began to melt. What was this song they were singing? Surely I had heard it. Only this time it was different. The melodious words, “Amazing...

...The worldview of Taxi Driver is the cynical take of what New York reality was in 1976. One of the characteristics that distinguish a film or TV show shot in Toronto, but set in New York is the garbage. New York streets are filled with garbage and it litters every frame of Taxi Driver. In Scorsese’s view, New York has become so vile that men like Travis have prepared themselves to clean up the streets as they wish to. That’s not to say Scorsese condones their actions, the film is shot in documentary style for a reason, no reason to cover that fact up. The world is being built in such a way that it becomes an excuse for violence. Several assassination attempts toward political figures have been cited as reasons by the perpetrators, such as John Hinckley Jr. He supposedly identified with...

...New York City, the city that will never sleep; I had the chance to see the charming city with my friends last year. Even I spend a week in New York City, I barely scratch the beauty of the city. There are still countless of tourist spots I want to go, but do not have time to feel it one by one. Even I only see the small part of New York City, it strongly attracted me and it gives me the new experience which is much new compare to Lincoln. As I lived in Lincoln for a year, I experience the huge difference between the New York City and Lincoln. When I got to New York City, I cannot directly see the sky unlike Lincoln. All I see were a lots of tall buildings around me. I saw many of people going and left at a rapid pace on the streets. It makes me kind of nervous and excited. Unlike Lincoln, I can just lay down the bed all day and think nothing. The lifestyle in New York City seems so fast and hurry. Like if you do not go for it, you will lose your opportunities forever. Besides the lifestyle in New York City attracted me, there are many fascinating attractions. The Chinatown in Manhattan is so amazing, you can eat any Chinese food in here. As I have come to the United State of American for half year, my friend and I spent a half weeks in this big Chinatown. Chinatown has a huge amount of restaurants and ancient building. It has over half of the city’s Chinese population. My friend and I can just speak our native language most of time in here. We get intimacy from the Chinatown...
