Oklahoma City, Oklahoma- In March of 2012 Del City police Captain Randy Harrison fatally shot 18 year old Dane Scott Jr. in the back under the assumption that Scott Jr. was reaching for a concealed firearm. Prior to the incident in March, Captain Randy Harrison had previously arrested Scott on numerous drug violations. The official police report states that Captain Harrison recalled a high speed chase and crash, then Scott Jr attempting to flee on foot, which ended in the fatal shooting of Scott Jr.
Harrison stated that there was a scuffle between Scott and Captain Harrison, leading to Harrison knocking a gun out of the hand of Scott. Harrison stated that he fired his gun because he didn’t want Scott to escape the scene and felt he posed a threat to witnesses in the area. Later, Captain Harrison recalled that he felt Scott had a second gun and would have fired into a crowd of onlookers. Several witnesses came forward to describe what they witnessed that day. One witness said that he planned on tackling Scott to aid the officer in distress, because he did not see Scott as a deadly force.
Captain Randy Harrison is being charged with Manslaughter for use of excessive force to Scott. I feel indifferent about this case. While it is the duty of Captain Harrison to protect and serve, was shooting Scott warranted? Especially with him being shot in the back of all places. Only Captain Harrison knows what was going through his mind when he fired at Scott as he was running away from him. Given the history of Captain Harrison and Dane Scott Jr. one would believe that maybe Captain Harrison had some kind of personal problem with Scott. But that holds no value in the courtroom.
On November 26th, 2013, Captain Randy Harrison was convicted of Manslaughter in the First Degree. He is currently awaiting sentencing and faces four years to life in prison. The jury recommended only

The article talks about how teenager’s struggle to establish a rapport with their peers in the early stages of adolescence, but not getting bad influences that could cause them problems years down the road. Teens who have trouble with getting along with their peers and having their own choices or independence tends to be at a higher risk at having drinking problems, drug abuse, and criminal tendencies later in life. Researchers at the University of Virginia have come to this conclusion by doing a new observational study and is documented in the journal Child Development (News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Vertical News Health, (2013, April 14). As a topic for a research topic, I would use this article it would be a good resource due...
