Sumitomo has developed and installed a large-scale power storage system that utilizes used EV batteries. The commercial scale storage system, built on Yume-shima Island, Osaka, will begin operating in February 2014. Over the next three years, the system will measure the smoothing effect of energy output fluctuation from the nearby “Hikari-no-mori,” solar farm. Sumitomo created the joint venture company, “4R Energy Corporation”, in collaboration with Nissan Motor in September 2010, to address the secondary use of li-ion batteries. The prototype system (600kW/400kWh) consists of sixteen used EV batteries.

Toyota Motor announced that it will begin verification testing of its wireless battery charging system for vehicles with an electrified powertrain in late February in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The system can charge a vehicle parked in alignment over a coil (as shown in Exhibit 1) on the surface of the ground. The charging system uses magnetic-resonance technology, which transmits electricity by utilizing the magnetic resonance resulting from changes in magnetic field intensity between a coil on the ground that transmits and a coil on the vehicle that receives. The system can reduce drops in power transmission efficiency that can be caused by misalignment or height differences between the transmitting coil and receiving coil.

Class Newsletter

...Mrs. Cobb’s Class Newsletter September 2013 [pic] As part of the Responsive Classroom approach to classroom management, teachers at Mt. Pleasant employ a technique we call ‘Take a Break.’ When teachers ask students to ‘Take a Break’, students are not in trouble. The action is meant to be non-punitive It’s true purpose is to redirect a student who is making a mistake, about to make a mistake, or who is heading down the wrong path. We are guiding students to stop and think about what is going on and helping students make better choices or calm down while taking a break. Often, students are sent to the “Think Chair” simply to gather themselves. The goal is to get a student ready to learn and to keep instruction as seamless as possible. Eventually, we would like to get students to notice when they, themselves, need to take a break. Please be patient with teachers and your child as we put this strategy in place in our classrooms. Do not be alarmed if your child tells you they had to ‘take a break’ or even several breaks these first weeks of school. It’s a natural part of the back-to-school learning curve. It might feel odd at first, but will eventually be a normal part of our classroom. We have used it for many years with much success and I expect this year to follow suit. Since this is so common in our room, I will not be notifying parents of every break taken, but will contact parents if a trend develops or if taking a break is not working. 3rd...

...The course Reading and Writing across the curriculum was expectedly an eye opener for me. As per usual with courses taught by Dr. Saul and Mrs. Rock, I expected to be involved in activities which showed the importance of reading and writing across all subject matter in the curriculum. My first thoughts of reading and writing were that it was linked exclusively to Language Arts but this course has shown the importance of reading and writing throughout the curriculum. The first topic that intrigued me was Chall’s Stages of Reading Development. These six (6) stages show step by step the process of reading development a child undertakes straight up to adulthood. By having an understanding of these stages and the characteristics that children portray in each, a teacher can effectively cater to the needs of the children. For example, in the first stage, the Pre-Reading Stage, aged six (6) months to (6) years, children garner information via being read to by an adult, who responds to and warmly appreciates the child’s interest in books and reading and via play with books, pencils, paper and blocks. This stage creates a foundation for reading and writing as children identify letters and understand words they hear even though they can read few if any at all. Teachers or adults can let children choose books of interest and read them to them consistently to aid in retention of knowledge. Knowledge of Chall’s Stages of Reading Development is also immensely useful when dealing with children...

...Dear Newsmaker Letter Rory Pritchard Professor Brad Long October 3rd 2014 Actual article: Children working on tobacco farms in the United States are exposed to nicotine, toxic pesticides, and other dangers, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. While US law prohibits the sale of tobacco products to children, children can legally work on tobacco farms in the US. The world’s largest tobacco companies buy tobacco grown on US farms, but none have child labor policies that sufficiently protect children from hazardous work. The 138-page report, “Tobacco’s Hidden Children: Hazardous Child Labor in US Tobacco Farming,” documents conditions for children working on tobacco farms in four states where 90 percent of US tobacco is grown: North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Children reported vomiting, nausea, headaches, and dizziness while working on tobacco farms, all symptoms consistent with acute nicotine poisoning. Many also said they worked long hours without overtime pay, often in extreme heat without shade or sufficient breaks, and wore no, or inadequate, protective gear. “As the school year ends, children are heading into the tobacco fields, where they can’t avoid being exposed to dangerous nicotine, without smoking a single cigarette” said Margaret Wurth, children’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch and co-author of the report. “It’s no surprise the children exposed to poisons in the tobacco fields are getting sick.” The report is based...
