The new faces of homelessness is the working poor. In “Nickeled and Dimed”, Ehrenreich highlighted the difficulty of obtaining food and shelter with when the only sources of income is a low wage job. Ehrenreich notes that the poor cannot compete with the rich. Because while food is somewhat inflation-proof, the cost of housing has sky-rocketed but wages have not increased based on demand.
This population is also introduced in to us in Gibson’s 2017 New York Magazine's article, where eight individual and families affected by homelessness shares their story. Gibson's article spotlight several families where people that were employed could not afford to meet their basic necessities. Gibson provided a narrative about Abena Walker a 36 year old
